THE TRUMP PRESIDENCY

Politicians are exempt. Shame.

Federal employees deemed “essential” (or “excepted”) will still have to report to work, while the rest will be furloughed. No one gets paid until Congress passes a funding bill, and whether furloughed employees get paid is up to the government.

I'm confident they have plenty of sick time, I'm not worried in the least.

Its inconvenient not a catastrophe.

It could feel like more than just an inconvenience to military families who live paycheck to paycheck and need their jobs. But, I hope it doesn't come to that. No compromise and temporary solution was put forth in Congress today.

Snip:
Troops and Defense Department civilians faced the possibility of frozen pay and furloughs as the government shut down on Saturday after last-minute efforts on Capitol Hill to pass protections fizzled.

Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., proposed fast-tracking a bill on the Senate floor after a midnight budget deadline Friday that would have ensured paychecks continued. But the move was opposed by Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., leaving the military and hundreds of thousands of civilian workers hanging.

“I want to send a very clear signal that we don’t want any moment to pass with there being any uncertainty with any soldier anywhere in the world that they will be paid for the valiant work that they do on behalf of our national security,” McCaskill said.

During the last government shutdown in 2013, Congress passed legislation in advance that kept troops paid and allowed about 350,000 furloughed Defense Department civilians to return to work. This time, bills were filed in both the House and Senate in the hours before the deadline and went nowhere.

The next military pay date is Feb. 1, and many workers are likely off for the weekend, so there may be no immediate threat to military checkbooks, but Defense Secretary Jim Mattis noted the potential hardship in a memo sent out Friday when the shutdown became certain.

“I recognize the consequences of a government shutdown,” Mattis wrote. “You have my personal commitment that the department’s leadership will do our best to mitigate the impacts of the disruptions and any financial burdens to you and your families.”

Active-duty troops are required to show up to work during a shutdown but will not get paid on schedule until a new federal budget is passed. War operations in Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan will also continue.

The Defense Department’s 750,000 or so civilian workers potentially face more financial hardship. They will be sent home without pay if they are not deemed crucial to safety and protection of the military. Congress would likely need to pass legislation for furloughed workers to go back to work or receive back pay after the shutdown.

Can we assume this was as important to you in 2013? I'm starting to think you're kinda full of shit.

You think a lot of things and make many assumptions that aren't accurate, so I'm not surprised or bothered Biggie.

First off, it's always important to me that people get paid for their work as scheduled, especially ones that don't make a lot and don't have a lot of money saved.

Secondly, yeah, I've always cared about things like that. I imagine most people do.

Thirdly, in 2013 protections were put in place before the shutdown went into effect, as noted in the article posted above.

Anyway, if you want to read the thread with thoughts on the 2013 shutdown, here's the link: http://mockforums.net/showthread.php?tid=10541

Politically motivated outrage is right up there with pigs flying, I've done it myself and unlike many politicians and outraged citizens I admit it. Some people use selective hearing though and all I can do is shake my head and smile. Some have lost common sense and I've never meet anyone that is actually truly correct in these things.

You shouldn't be so wrapped up in trump, honey. There's too many other wonderful things to be thinking about rather than that toxic cesspool of a human being.

Looks like there's gonna be a vote today on another CR to re-open the government until Congress can agree on a permanent funding bill. This one is said to be a shorter extension, expiring on February 8th.

Senate majority leader McConnell made a public statement that it's 'his intention' to bring an immigration reform bill to the floor if an agreement can't be reached by then.

But, he's promised Republican and Democratic senators the same such intention on other issues the last couple of times that temporary extensions were requested and his intent did not become reality. So, there's skepticism that he'll come through this time if yet another CR is approved.

Anyway, we'll see soon enough if the Congress can come together to end this shutdown today.

Anyone with a grain of common sense would see it that way.
