The Wrestler (2008)
#1
I just saw The Wrestler with Mickey Rourke in it. This is SUCH a damn good movie. If you want to see an actor playing a used up-beat down-end of his rope character then you have to see Rourke as over the hill professional wrestler Randy "The Ram" Robinson. It is VERY hard to watch this film because The Ram is such a mess and how well Rourke plays a character that is probably VERY close to his real life.

Rourke IS going to be one of the favorites for Best Actor for this role. This is one of those once in a lifetime roles where everything comes together for an actor. I was exhausted at the end of watching this movie. You literally feel every hit and fall the character goes through and most of the pain is from his life outside of the ring. Rourke's relationship with his estranged daughter is also very hard to watch at times.

Marisa Tomei is also good in the movie as the closest thing Rourke has to a love interest. she plays a stripper and is virtually naked a lot throughout. She looks good.

Rourke has had so much plastic surgery that he looks "off", but it is perfect for this role. He looks permanently beat up and used up and again, it is perfect for this role.

This movie has already won awards and is really getting a lot of quality good reviews. It feels real. It feels dirty, and it will really make you hurt with the character.

I finished the movie over an hour ago and still feel bad for the character to the point it is almost upsetting.

A MUST see.

Wow, really? I thought it would be lame, considering I feel Rourke is lame. Maybe this is his comeback like Downy's in Iron Man.

Thanks for the review.

virtually EVERY review says Rourke is not only great, but incredible. This is kind of his comeback roll, but really he already had that in Sin City, which he was great in also. Even Rotten Tomatoes, which hates most movies gives The Wrestler an incredible 98% rating, one of the highest I have ever seen on that site.

Looks like a must see film to me.

I think the life of one time wrestling superstar Jake "the snake" Roberts has had a lot of influence on Rourke's character here.

See a film like Beyond the mat to prove this

I wonder how long it took Rourke to get as ripped as he looks in that pic in the OP. He does look like shit in the IMDB link, though. You're right, Liquid; he's been sliced and diced way too much.

But I'd check this film out just based on your review here. ::thumbs::

I think hes been pretty ripped for a while now in Sin City he was pretty ripped under all the special effects make up.

Hopefully the film will reinforce the fact that pro-wrestling is fucking hard work and dangerous.

he looks really strange, but he got big and ripped for the film and looks the part, but the acting is really excellent from the entire cast.

Mickey Rourke wins Golden Globe for Best Actor in a stunning win. He REALLY is incredible in this movie and you feel every hit he takes and every negative thing that happens in his life. You have to see this movie.

So, I see he got a Golden Globe last night for her performance in that movie. He sure looked pretty worn out. He did thank whoever it was who put him in the movie even though he was a hard sell to producers and backers.
