Serious Dog Question
#21
Did you all miss the part where she nonchalantly said she'd consider getting rid of her cats? People with that kind of attitude shouldn't have pets... at all.

I've seen plenty of well behaved JRT's. But they need activity. Huskies are not good family dogs. These are working dogs and are bred to work in cold climates. It's awful seeing these dogs in hot humid weather in the summer time. They suffer terribly and have to be kept in the air conditioning. This renders them bored shitless because they cannot get the hours a day exercise they need.

Ramsey, just go to the shelter. You'll find the best animal there.

I think we would go to the shelter and rescue one. My brother had the coolest dog and he is a mutt. I love him!!

Lump, I wouldn't just get rid of the cats. Seriously. If we were to get a dog and it didn't work out with the cats, my Mom is going to take them. I wouldn't just leave them on the side of the road or trade them in for the dog. Ideally I would like to get a dog that can co-exist with the cats.

Shit, Ant... you ever run across those ignorant motherfuckers who refuse to shave their heavy-coated, cold-climate dogs 'because' (they say) 'the hair INSULATES them from the heat'

Yeah, just like wearing a nice thick down jacket in the summer time would 'insulate' a human from the heat. 78

I vote for a Bassett Hound or a Beagle.

I beg to differ on the cat getting mauled...unless it is a stupid cat, like my ragdoll. 20 lbs of fur is all he is. My six pound tom cat will get my vote any day over any dog.

Dogs and cats can easily learn to live together. If either the dog or cat is aggressive toward the other though, you have to know what you're doing to fix the situation.

I agree with that. I've never had a problem with dogs and cats. I have see them not get along at others peoples houses though.
I have the best pic of my ragdoll and my sons pitbull puppy. If I can't get it on here, I'm going to send it to Ant and let her post it for me, if she would be so kind.

That would be my choice too. They are both pretty low maintnence and they should adapt fine to the cats, especially if you introduce the dog as a puppy.

I'm sure any of us would oblige.

Ant is right, Jacks are excellent dogs, and so what if they're a type of terrier? They can STILL be well behaved.

What I don't agree with though is Huskies in summer. Ok, yes, I live in Michigan so we have a cold climate... in winter. In summer its sweltering nastiness... hot and muggy. Yet I know 3 people who own Huskies and they're just fine in summer if they shed their coats and are kept trimmed. In fact they love to play.

But I do also agree that finding a good dog at the rescue shelter is the best option.

Ramsey should just get rid of her sons... that would solve the dog issue.

I never said they couldn't be well behaved, they're AWESOME obedience dogs... but THEY HAVE TO BE KEPT BUSY (as I already stated). Ramsey is talking about a situation where the dog would be left ALONE at home ALL DAY. It's very very unlikely she would even be able to find an adult (JR) dog that was already well enough trained that she could leave it alone at home all day without incident.

I've seen some huskies that do shed out their undercoat during the summer and are fine. I've seen others (and maybe it's just their grooming) that still have an undercoat in the summer time, and are miserable. A viable option for those dogs, is shaving them in the hot months. Yes, you have to be careful to keep them out of the sun if they have a light colored coat, but it makes them much more comfortable.

Syber, Jack Russels DO NOT have to be kept busy. Did you miss the part where I said my family's is left home all the time? 6, 8, sometimes 10 hours. Alone. A minimum of 3 days a week.

Mixed breed? wtf are you talking about. He's a "Red", which is a pure-blooded JR with a reddish brown coat and white markings. Dipshit. He's a fucking $500 dog... or would be if he hadn't been snipped. Snipped he's a $300 dog. So blow off Smiley_emoticons_razz
