The tragedy unfolded in Anse Lazio on the island of Praslin, regarded as one of the world’s most beautiful beaches and a favourite honeymoon destination for thousands of Britons every year.

PRASLIN ISLAND, SEYCHELLES – The sun wouldn’t be up for another hour when we met Daryl Green, a fisherman known on this island as “the guy who can catch anything.” Green always gets up early, but for the last few days he has had something other than the day’s catch on his mind.

Green invited us into his home for tea and explained in detail how he was trying to catch the killer shark that is terrorizing the Seychelles. In just over two weeks, two tourists have been killed off the island of Paslin, where Green has lived and fished for more than 50 years.

Seychelles fishermen believe they may have caught the shark which killed a British honeymooner Ian Redmond as he went snorkelling yards off the beach.

Locals are actively hunting down predators after the 30-year-old and a Frenchman were both killed in the space of two weeks.

two tiger sharks were caught on the opposite side of the island from where the newly-married man was attacked. Experts will carry out tests.

As Labor Day weekend begins, many will be planning family trips to the beach. Although, for those in San Diego, California, this picture might make them think twice. A photograph shows the moment a Great White shark was spotted in a wave in Encinitas in California - just a few feet away from completely oblivious surfers.

Those graphic photos of shark attacks you posted freaked me out. I love the ocean but I have a healthy fear of it; now I will be very paranoid. The bear eating the teenage girl has got to be the worst though... that gave me nightmares.

Perth Now
a shark has attacked and killed a 21-year-old bodyboarder near a packed beach in Western Australia.

The man was bodyboarding with friends when he was taken by the shark today at a popular surfing spot, called Boneyards, near Bunker Bay about 3.5 hours south of Perth.

Dunsborough Police officer-in-charge Sergeant Craig Anderson said the Wilyabrup man was deceased before he was pulled from the water by a friend and another member of the group he was bodysurfing with.

"Out of nowhere it would appear the young fellow has been taken by a shark, nobody actually saw the shark itself, but they retrieved the young man's body in the water amongst some blood," Sgt Anderson said.

"Talking to a local; this morning you could have described it as perfect shark conditions, you know dark and gloomy water, overcast skies, light rain falling, there was whale action earlier in the morning in the bay, and there were seals about," he said.

The beach has been closed and is expected to remain closed until at least midnight Monday.

PerthNow reports a vessel was sweeping the bay in search of the shark, which has yet to be spotted or identified, but was believed to be a great white.

The 21-year-old moved to WA about five years ago from the Eastern States and police are currently notifying the man's next of kin.

Sgt Anderson said the man was unmarried but had a girlfriend who recently returned overseas.

"You've got to take your hat off to the young fellow who was surfing with him and his mate for bringing (the victim) ashore. The nature of his injuries was significant, it's not something that even volunteer rescuers or emergency services like to see, even my own staff, so it's just something you have to deal with as a police officer and do the job you have to do," he said.

Bunkers Beach Cafe manager Hamish McLeay said the water was full of people when the shark attack happened abot 1pm (WST).

“There was another 20 people in the water as well,” Mr McLeay said.

“There is a big seal colony around the corner, he might have been mistaken for one of them, it’s been known to happen.”

Mr McLeay said he had managed the café for six years but that this was the first major shark attack he was aware of in the area.

A Yallingup woman, who did not want to be named, was at the beach with her husband and two young girls when the attack happened.

She said two men ran along the beach yelling at people to get out of the water.

"We were just going for a walk along the beach for Father's Day and two young blokes came running up to us trying to get people out," she said.

"There were mainly surfers in the water and everyone cleared out pretty quickly. People were just in panic.

"They pulled him out of the water and there was a lot of blood on the beach. There was just no hope, he was cut in half."

In the moments after the attack, desperate onlookers ran to a nearby home to phone for police and ambulance.

WA shark expert Hugh Edwards told PerthNow that the victim was most likely attacked by a Great White Shark.

soup?
they're getting even.

A symbol of wealth and luxury, shark fin soup was once prized by Chinese emperors for its rarity. Today, it's typically served at weddings and banquets to demonstrate a host's good fortune.

But it comes at a high price, for one's wallet and the environment. Shark fins, which fetch up to $600 per pound, are sometimes acquired through the controversial practice of finning: a shark's fins are cut off and the rest of its body is tossed into the ocean.

Thanks for this LC. I missed the details on the news, and I thought it was a 'surfboarder' and just thought it was a classic tale of someone out in the deep and was taken in that circumstance. But if he was a bodyboarder then he wasn't out that deep. Here's the thing, if he wasn't out that deep, I wonder if he was standing or riding a wave when it happened.

Here's the thing with Perth, it's bloody hot over there, so the water is warmer.

this man was warned. the shark flag was flying.

daily fail
A Briton was last night in critical condition after losing both his legs in a shark attack.

Witnesses said the man, named as Michael Cohen, had gone swimming despite warnings that a shark was circling close to the beach in Cape Town, South Africa.

The 43-year-old is said to have swum regularly at Fish Hoek beach, notorious for Great White sightings, even telling fellow beachgoers: ‘If a shark takes me, then blame me, not the shark.’

Witnesses said he parked his car and then walked right past a flag indicating that the beach was closed.

At least two people warned him that a shark had been seen, but he strode into the water anyway.

Tracy Sassen, a former South African surfing champion, watched as Mr Cohen was taken by the 10ft Great White only a few yards from the beach.

‘I saw two swimmers in the sea, even though the beach was closed,’ she said.

‘I saw a burst of water and thought it was a seal taking a fish or something. Then people started rushing into the sea and pulling this guy out of the water. He was moaning and crying and pleading with them, “Please help me, please help me”.

Too stupid to live.

I know that sounds terribly harsh but what the hell can you say about someone who does something like this. 78

waiting for ID and photos.

ORDERS have been issued for a shark to be hunted down and killed after a fatal attack on a 32-year-old American man off Rottnest Island near Perth.

Two companions of the scuba diver saw bubbles erupt on the water early this afternoon before his body surfaced near their boat.

West Australian premier Colin Barnett said Fisheries Minister Norman Moore had almost immediately issued an order for the shark to be hunted down and killed if possible.

He said fisheries officers would spread baits in the area of the attack to try to catch the shark.

The death is the second shark fatality in WA within two weeks, after 64-year-old Bryn Martin was killed at Perth's Cottesloe Beach earlier this month.

Mr Martin's body has not been recovered, but he was believed to have been taken by a great white shark after his torn bathers were found on the sea bed.

Mr Barnett said his government would now review whether to increase the numbers of sharks that commercial fisherman were allowed to catch.

He also said his government would look at increasing aerial shark patrols over popular WA beaches.

But the premier noted that the latest attack occurred well off the shore where no patrols would operate.

Water Police Senior Sergeant Greg Trew said police received a call this afternoon that the shark victim had surfaced in "a flurry of bubbles".

He said the American citizen, who had been working in WA for six months, had "fairly horrific injuries" and was believed to be dead when he was pulled from the water by his diving companions.

The attack happened about a kilometre off the north of Rottnest when the man was diving alone from a 25m vessel.

Sen Sgt Trew said the shark was seen by the man's two companions as they were leaving the area after retrieving the body and they reported it to be three metres long.

"It's traumatic for everyone involved, it's a tragic situation," he said.

All beaches on Rottnest Island were closed after the attack.

Snr Sgt Trew said conditions at the time were overcast without much wind, and he would think twice about swimming on such a cloudy day.
