Canton woman found on road, in critical condition after being burned
10:58 AM, Aug 27, 2012

ZANESVILLE — A 29-year-old Canton woman remains in critical condition with fourth-degree burns on her body after being discovered on Ohio 208 early Sunday morning.

Muskingum County Sheriff Matt Lutz said the woman was discovered by a motorist who was passing by near Steel Mill Road around 8:30 a.m.

The woman was possibly beaten and raped before being set on fire, but Lutz, who is not releasing the name of the woman, said they are still investigating those possibilities.

Lutz said investigators did find a spot in the woods in the Tri-Valley Wildlife area not far from where the woman was found that could be where the woman was victimized.

Evidence was taken from that area, Lutz said, but he is not releasing exactly what that evidence is at this time.

...

The woman was taken to Ohio Medical Center Burn Unit, Lutz said, by emergency medical helicopter on Sunday morning.

“In my 24 years as a law enforcement officer, I’ve never seen anything so brutal,” Lutz said.

Lutz did say he doesn’t believe the incident was random, and there are several suspects being sought for questioning.

...

Celeste Fronsman, who succumbed to fourth-degree burns and other injuries, was discovered in the middle of Ohio 208 in Muskingum County at about 8:30 a.m. Sunday morning. Although she was barely alive, she was able to give some information to the motorist who found her, as well as to medics and law enforcement officers, Muskingum County Sheriff Matt Lutz said.

Fronsman was taken by Medflight to Wexner Medical Center at Ohio State University in Columbus, where she died at 2:22 p.m.Tuesday. An autopsy has been scheduled, Lutz said.

...

Lutz said detectives are scouring for clues in the Canton area, trying to determine where and with whom Fronsman was last seen and just how a truck located in Canton Sunday evening is connected with her disappearance and now death.

WBNS 10TV has reported that Fronsman’s father, who also lives in Canton, said he had lent the truck to his daughter Friday, but that she never returned.

Lutz said his office still is searching for evidence and clues in what is now a homicide.

...

Fronsman had a record of soliciting (prostitution), drug offenses and traffic citations, according to Canton Municipal Court and Stark County Common Pleas Court records.

Court records show she had been released from the Stark County Jail on July 18 after serving time on a soliciting charge.

A slight breeze softly sways a gray towel wrapped around a wooden cross on Ohio 208 in memory of Celeste Fronsman, of Canton.

Purple and yellow flowers grace the ground, and a Gatorade bottle is attached in the cross.

The cross was put up by a Central Ohio man who found Fronsman on Sunday morning, burned and beaten, near the Tri-Valley Wildlife Area in Muskingum County. The towel, which now hangs on the cross, was the one he used to cover Fronsman's nude body, offering her what little comfort he could.

"She was screaming that they were trying to kill her," the man said. "At first I thought it was someone playing a joke. I looked around to see if anyone else was there, but couldn't see anyone. That's when I made the first 911 call."

A horrific sight

The man, whom Central Ohio.com is not identifying, had just passed the road near the intersection of Keys and Steel Hill roads about 15 minutes earlier, but hadn't seen her.

"I was thinking what a good life it is," he said. "It was a beautiful Sunday morning, and I was on my way home picking up my family in time for church."

As he passed by on his way back through about 8:35 a.m., the horribly burned woman rose up from the road and flung herself onto the hood of his truck when he stopped.

"It was like something out of a horror show," he said.

...

Fronsman was covered from head to toe with fourth-degree burns, the man said; her hair was completely gone and her skin was hanging on her body, or falling off.

He was about halfway out of the truck when Fronsman flung herself at him, crying in agony.

A comforting angel

"I caught her and picked her up in my arms," he said. "I told her I was going to lay her in the grass and knew then that God had put me there for her."

As the man laid Fronsman down in the grass, he said she kept crying for him to help her.

"I assured her that I wouldn't leave her, but I wanted to get the blanket out of the truck to cover her with," he said. "She didn't want to let go of my hand, and she was gasping for air. Her skin was just hanging off her."

After getting the blanket and a bottle of Gatorade, the man gently held Fronsman's head so she could drink.

"She was still gasping for air, and I noticed that she had a 2-inch strap wrapped around her neck that had burned into her,"
he said. "I told her that I was going to loosen the strap so she could breathe better, but knew not to take it completely off because I knew the police would need it."

...

The will to live

Fronsman was in excruciating pain, he said, and kept asking him if he had any morphine, so he made another 911 call.

Fronsman was able to tell him her name, age and where she lived, he said, but was extremely concerned he was going to leave her.

...

When the Adamsville Volunteer Fire Department and EMS squad arrived, he said medics looked shocked to see her condition, but immediately began trying to place her on a stretcher.

"She was so badly burnt, her skin kept coming off and they couldn't get her on," he said. "But, God bless her, her will to live was so strong she picked herself up off the ground and placed herself on the stretcher."

...

"Everyone who came to the scene that day was so professional," he said. "The EMS crew, the deputies and the crew from MedFlight. They were so kind and good to her. I'm so thankful for all of them. I just wished she hadn't been in so much pain. I'm very sorry she passed away."

......

And now since there have been three arrests made (separately), I'm going to post an article from today (9/04) with info on all of them

CANTON —

Investigators in Muskingum County have made two more arrests in the slaying of a Canton woman found beaten and burned last month.

Lamonica J. Washington, 24, of 901 Sixth St. SW, was arrested Monday afternoon by Canton police.

A third suspect, LaFonse D. Dixon, 33, was arrested Tuesday afternoon.

Both were being held on charges of aggravated murder, aggravated arson and kidnapping.

Muskingum County Sheriff Matthew Lutz announced the arrests during a press conference Tuesday in Zanesville.

Washington was picked up on a misdemeanor charge drug possession that was filed by Canton police, jail records show.

She is the second woman charged in the death of Celeste Fronsman, a 29-year-old Canton woman found beaten and badly burned in Muskingum County.

A passerby found her Aug. 26 and Fronsman died two days later. The coroner has said she suffered burns to 70 to 80 percent of her body.

Katrina M. Culberson, 20, of 424 17th St. SE, was charged last week with aggravated murder, aggravated arson and kidnapping in connection with Fronsman’s death.

My God, that's awful. I'm glad Celeste was found and could tell what happened.

a truly grisly and gruesome crime.
and sadly it is the not-uncommon end for those in the lifestyle in which she found herself.

Fronsman had more than 20 previous arrests, many of them for prostitution and cocaine charges.

doesn't mean she deserved it, only that it's not the nicest people you associate with in that life. it's a high-risk life.

very sad for her family.
