A Bride's Death on SCUBA & Robyn Gardner~ missing snorkeler in Aruba
#21
Thursday Aug. 11

Authorities can only hold Giordano for five more days without pressing charges. And until Gardner is found, the answer to what happened to her will remain a mystery.
the latest this morning from the Aruba Herald:

Many US media have been reporting that the alleged area where the suspect in the dissaperance of the American woman Robyn Gardner says is Baby Beach. This information is incorrect. The suspect says that they went snorkeling behind the Nanki Country Club area. This is close to the Baby Beach area but is located between Baby Beach and Rodgers Beach.

His client was detained on suspicion of murder, although no body has been found and mr. Lopez says that he does not understand this. Lopez said his client is divorced and has children and the woman who went missing might be married, but there is no further information available on her. Lopez explained the district attorney has 10 days to do its investigation and he hopes that within this time, anytime he can be able to tell his client to go home. Lopez said his client had spoken to the woman's parents and the Vice Consul of the U.S.A. in Curacao. Lopez had not received his client's statement yet, but he understands that nothing has changed and his client has only given more details on the first few statements.

In an interview with Justice Minister Arthur Dowers, he said that information to the press will only be given by the district attorney, Mr. Taco Stijn, because the technical information issued has to be consistent. The minister said that no information on the content of the case will be issued to prevent disturbances in the investigation before it is concluded.

Minister Dowers said he had gone to the location where the lady disappeared at Nanki, San Nicolas during the massive, extensive search being conducted by police, maritime police, the coastguard and their partners, including the helicopter services. The search has not given any positive results; the minister said the press would be informed as soon as there is new information. On Tuesday an American woman was reported missing during a snorkeling trip by her travel companion. The companion, Gary Giordano was arrested on Friday as a murder and/or manslaughter suspect in the investigation.

Arubaherald.com has received information from a very strong source that the Aruban investigators have contacted the FBI in relations to the disappearance of American woman Robyn Gardner (35). The exact role that the FBI will play in this investigations is not know at this point. One of the motives to involve the FBI is that both the suspect as the victim are of US nationality.

The man being held in Aruba in the disappearance of Robyn Gardner, a 35-year-old Frederick woman, was investigated by the Montgomery County (Maryland) State’s Attorney’s Office last year on allegations he stalked and harassed women, secretly videotaped their sexual encounters and posted the footage on the Internet, according to court documents.

The information emerges from documents related to a February 2010 peace order served against Gaithersburg resident Gary Giordano by a North Potomac woman.

The woman claimed Giordano threatened her with violence, telling authorities he said he would "terminate me" and told her "the world would be better off without me, and he could help." She also said Giordano posted pictures of her and letters about her on neighbors’ mailboxes.

a comment about the cuckolded stateside boyfriend...he has appeared everywhere on cable TV except sesame st. blah blah blah. he's getting his 15 minutes for sure. and taking full advantage of the situation. they were broken up. she left with this other guy. her judgement was poor sadly for her. the old boyfriend needs to stick a sock in it.

edit to add: good!
Now that the FBI is also involved in the investigation of the disappeared woman Robyn Gardner the FBI has stopped her boyfriend of talking to the media. Richard informs that the FBI feels that it could harm the investigations.

The Aruba Herald:

On Friday, members of a special division of the local Police Corps together with firefighters held a search for the body of an American woman who was reported missing on Aruba last week Tuesday in the area north of the Dog Cemetery in Sero Colorado. Firefighters were lowered into different crevices that used to be covered; through the years they were either opened or their covers had been destroyed.
When they finished the search inside five of the six wells, police decided to begin a search in the sandy area close to the Dog Cemetery, where they walked in a certain pattern, inserting rods into the sand.

The search was stopped at sunset. Firefighters said water reached up to their knees inside the holes. No traces of a body nor any proof of the presence of a body were found. Authorities conducted the search with the intention of eliminating doubts related to the disappearance of Robyn Gardner, a 35-year-old American woman who was reported missing by her travel companion during a snorkeling trip last week. The travel companion, Gary Giordano was detained by local police on the island last week Friday on suspicion of murder and/or manslaughter. Giordano's lawyer was present at Colony, sitting at the bar hah where the American couple had had something to drink and/or eat. The lawyer was also at the location of the search, only for a few minutes, before the firefighters were lowered into the holes.

Late Friday, FBI agents who have been assisting Aruban authorities searched Giordano’s single-family home on Pueblo Road in Gaithersburg. About a dozen unmarked cars were on the scene, and agents could be seen on the first and second floors of the stone home, which is set back from the road.

“We’re here this evening to execute a federal search warrant on the residence of Gary Vincent Giordano,” FBI agent Phil Celestini told reporters outside the home. “This search is being conducted pursuant to a criminal investigation. Because this is an active investigation, we cannot comment further.”

ORANJESTAD, Aruba — Prosecutors on the Caribbean island of Aruba say a judge has agreed to their request to continue holding an American tourist as a suspect in the death of a woman who was traveling with him.

The prosecutor's office says in a statement the judge accepted a petition to detain Gary V. Giordano for 16 more days.

Investigators say they need the additional time to investigate Giordano. Prosecutors have said he is a suspect in the death of travel companion Robyn Gardner.

The court hearing was held behind closed doors Monday at the jail where Giordano is held.

Authorities in Aruba are investigating an insurance policy taken out by Gary Giordano before his trip to Aruba as a possible motive in the disappearance of missing Maryland woman Robyn Gardner.

The investigation into the $1.5 million accidental death policy on Gardner -- which names Giordano as a beneficiary -- has been confirmed exclusively with ABC News by a police source in Aruba, as has the fact that he purchased the pricier one-year policy over the cheaper, more commonly purchased five-year policy.

Aruba Herald today:
A few days ago, reporters asked suspect Gary Giordano’s attorney Michael Lopez if he knew of a condom to be among the items being tested in the case against his client. Lopez said he was not aware of this.

In the meantime police sources say that Aruban authorities are waiting for the lab results on traces of blood that were found and a condom that was taken out of the wrapper, but was not used. These two “items”, if after tests are found to be evidence in this case, might determine if Gary Giordano is found guilty of the disappearance or death of Robyn Gardner. The police are very cautious and not giving information on the investigation as to avoid any disturbance. Even so, information is leaking. The main challenge in this case is that no body has been found yet.

this is from People mag which i consider news-lite-brained:

The most recent shocker was the discovery of graphic photographs on Giordano's digital camera. The photos show Gardner in sexual positions with "parts of" Giordano, according to Stein. The images, a source tells PEOPLE are "beyond pornographic."
"He's a mean bastard," says Taco Stein, solicitor general in Aruba. "The way he treats women … it's all geared toward himself."

and further, someone screwed up, supposedly now the insurance beneficiary was her mother, not him.

i'll say it again. can't trust "reporting".

AP is still reporting this:

Giordano also had an accidental-death insurance policy on her for $1.5 million and sought to claim the money two days after reporting her missing, a person who provided information to the investigation has told The Associated Press.

The details of the policy obtained by Giordano before his trip to Aruba may help explain why he has been detained on suspicion of involvement in the death of Gardner.

The person with knowledge of the policy told the AP that Giordano purchased a $1.5 million American Express Travel Insurance policy shortly before he left for Aruba and that the accidental-death benefit covered only the length of their short trip.

The source told the AP that Giordano called the insurance company on Aug. 4, while the search for Gardner was still going on. He sought to confirm that the documents listing him as the insurance beneficiary had been received and wanted to begin redeeming the policy.

This person also said that records indicate Giordano asked whether any search costs would be covered by the policy.

The source did not have authorization to publicly release the information and agreed to speak with the AP only on condition of anonymity.

Investigators have also said that they had trouble identifying Giordano in surveillance video because he frequently changed his toupees. hah

I have purchased accidental death benefits for myself and for my wife when ever we fly either alone or together , it's stupid not to.

at any rate the anonomous person broke the law by speaking.

My gut tells me this guy did something to this woman, the very least of which will have been to lead the authorites to the wrong place.

They more than likely visited where he took them, but I would bet it is not where she entered the water at.

They still haven't caught him yet.

Gary Giordano arrives at a police station in handcuffs and without a hair piece as a witness disputes his account of how Robyn Gardner disappeared.

A U.S. tourist detained in Aruba after the suspected death of his travel companion is facing fresh questioning after a witness told police that the couple did not go into the sea.

Gary Giordano, 50, claimed that Robyn Gardner disappeared two weeks ago as they snorkelled off an isolated beach.

But a man who was fishing at the spot at the time the Maryland woman is claimed to have vanished said that the pair left the beach without going into the water.

The witness told police that he saw the tourists walking on the beach at 4pm, but that they drove away without swimming in the ocean, reported ABC News.

Last Photo of Robyn Gardner in Aruba Before She Vanished

This photo obtained exclusively by ABC News shows Robyn Gardner, the Maryland woman missing for more than two weeks, leaving a restaurant in Aruba with companion Gary Giordano, now the leading suspect in her disappearance.
The time stamp on the photo is 6:12 -- 4:12 p.m., less than two hours before Giordano returned to the restaurant to report that Gardner had disappeared.

Missing Maryland woman Robyn Gardner was heavily intoxicated when she was last seen alive in an Aruban restaurant, less than two hours before her companion reported her missing during an evening snorkeling trip.
Eyewitnesses said Gardner seemed woozy at the restaurant and barely ate her salad.

In addition, a restaurant worker told ABC News he thought it was odd to hear that the couple went snorkeling because Gardner "seemed so perfectly put together," referring to her clothing, hair and make-up.

edit to add, he WAS the beneficiary of the 1.5 million travel insurance, and tried to collect on it immediately. how dumb can you get?

Aruba Herald

Wednesday morning the judge of instruction will see suspect Gar Giordano at the KIA (Aruba Correctional Institute). The public prosecutor will need to discuss their evidence with the judge of instruction.
In case there is not enough evidence Gary Giordano may be released. In case there is enough evidence to keep him detained he will remain in jail for another 60 days. If he will be released this does not mean that he is free of any charges. The investigation will continue.

one of Miss Gardner's friends told police the pair met on Adult Friend Finder - a site which describes itself as 'the world's largest sex and swinger personals community', according to ABC News.

edit later to add:

The Examining Magistrate has ruled today that the American man suspected of involvement in the possible drowning of the American woman R.G. on the 2nd of august 2011, will remain in custody for a period of sixty (60) more days.

This was done on request of the Prosecutor’s Office Aruba. The Prosecutor’s Office and the Aruban Police Force hereby once more urge people who can give any information about the suspect G.V.G. to contact the Aruban Police in person or via the special tip line 11141. Persons who want to volunteer information from outside of Aruba are asked to make use of the number 297-582-0695, preceded by the usual international call code. They can record their information and leave a contact number.
