My power went out today.
#1
10 min later my propane generator kicked in. This is the first time it has been used. The only problem I can see is that I cannot tell if my power is back on until I look at the circuit board on my panel box or go out to the front of the house and see if anyone else has power or walk to the far side of the house and listen for the generator. It is very quiet and that is why I got a propane fired and not a diesel, but a guy at work said that with a droid phone I could get an app and just look at my phone.
How the hell did my Grandparents get by without all this crap? I am being sarcastic fuckstix. I once relied on a woodstove until that damn ice-storm 2 yrs ago.
You just never know how much you depend on electricity until it is gone for 4-5 days.
What would you do?

Damn, Skippy..MINE went out too..for a couple hours. I have propane too..but because my furnace has an electric ignition, no heat.
Power finally came back, and no internet. Cripes. Got Internet about 45 minutes after power returned.
I can live with no power..but no internet...an outrage/

Honestly, I'm not set up to have the power go out. I have both gas and electric, but my furnace has an electric starter, so I would have to use the gas fireplace. Only I don't have any firewood (afraid of termites). I would probably try to find the cheapest hotel that had power. Or take long, dark, hot showers out of boredom.

Stupid question: Is your generator hardwired to your house? Does it put out enough juice to keep the fridge and tv on? Because that is what is important.

I have fireplaces so I'd be able to stay warm, my FIOS has a battery backup & my laptop would be fully charged so I'd be okay for internet for a little while. As long as I had heat & internet I could be alright for quite some time. Worse case scenario, I'd go hangout in Cowboy's office, the stable has generators.
