Parents of six children who were removed from a Uniontown PA home that police said was covered in filth have been charged with child endangerment.
City police Officer Michael Garrow Sr. filed the charges Wednesday against Elizabeth Shaffer, 36, and James Elvin Boord, 48, both of 71 Mifflin Ave., Uniontown.
Garrow visited the couple's house on Friday after officials at LaFayette Elementary-Middle School were unable to get in touch with Shaffer to have her attend a conference concerning one of her children. Boord, who according to a police report is the stepfather of the child, went to the conference and said Shaffer did not appear because she is addicted to computer games.
In his police report, Garrow indicated that when Shaffer let him inside her house, he was "overwhelmed by the odor of feces" and found the home in deplorable condition.
"Filthy is a compliment," Garrow wrote in his report. "No carpets, anywhere, with dirt obviously there for years, not months or days. Inside the refrigerator was mold, dirt, old rotten food, a food plate with old, moldy French fries and ketchup."
Garrow indicated the stove top was covered with grease and dirt. He said he "wouldn't let a rat eat out of" a frying pan he found on the stove.
The walls were dirty, and the floors were covered in feces and huge piles of clothing. Garrow found dirty, sheetless mattresses and coverless pillows in the bedrooms.
"They were beyond cleaning," Garrow wrote. "They needed to be burned."
Garrow on Monday said Children and Youth Services removed the couple's children, including three toddlers, from the home.
A warrant has been issued for the couple. A date for a preliminary hearing has not been set.
