michael jackson~~the funeral

will you watch? should be a spectacle to rival Elvis' and Diana's.

(CNN)[/b] -- Will Michael Jackson stop the world?

Thousands are expected to swamp Los Angeles, California, to mourn him Tuesday at the Staples Center, and the accompanying media crush will be enormous.

The tribute to the King of Pop at Harlem's Apollo Theater earlier this week drew coverage from all over the world, along with a public turnout in the thousands.

Given the feverish interest in all things Jackson, the Los Angeles memorial could be one of the most-viewed events of all time.

"This will obviously be a huge media event, and with Web streams of the funeral, it may be impossible to say for sure how many people watched once all is said and done, because there's still no comprehensive way to measure Web viewing," said Toni Fitzgerald, of Media Life, in an e-mail interview.

A handful of events have earned the kind of worldwide coverage to put the world on pause, if only for a moment. The 1963 assassination of John F. Kennedy "had the nation locked in a trance for two or three days," recalled TV critic Ed Bark.

The world audience for the Apollo 11 moon landing has been estimated in the hundreds of millions. The BBC estimated 2.5 billion people watched the 1997 funeral of Princess Diana.

The numbers are easily exaggerated -- nobody knows how many people are watching in groups or in public places -- and the Web has complicated matters further. But in a multichannel, satellite TV, computer-and-cell phone world, the Jackson memorial could have an audience in the hundreds of millions.

It was first believed the event would take place at Jackson's Neverland Ranch. But the family announced Thursday that it will hold a private ceremony Tuesday, and then a massive public memorial service at the Staples Center. Fans had until 6 p.m. Saturday to register for free tickets to the memorial service. Organizers used a computer to choose 8,750 names from 1.6 million who registered since Friday.

"You have to go back to the Beatles, the death of John Lennon perhaps, and the death of Elvis Presley to find a comparable figure in, not just pop music, but pop culture," said Entertainment Weekly critic-at-large Ken Tucker. (EW, like CNN, is a unit of Time Warner.) "And Jackson so self-consciously turned himself into not just an American pop icon but a global pop icon. I think this does have worldwide implications and interest."

Michael Jackson to be buried without his brain

Organ removed as investigators seek clues to star's death[/b]

MichaelJackson will be buried this week⿿ without his brain. As his family tries to finalise details for the King of Pop⿿s funeral on Tuesday they have been told it will be held back for tests.

They faced the grim choice of waiting up to three weeks for Jackson⿿s brain to be returned to them or go ahead and bury him without it ⿿ which they have decided to do.

Los Angeles Coroner⿿s spokesman Craig Harvey confirmed that neuropathology tests will be carried out to see if it holds any clues to the exact cause of his death.

But the examination cannot begin until at least two weeks after the death when the brain has hardened sufficiently to slice it open.

Jackson died from a cardiac arrest at his Beverly Hills mansion on June 25 after a suspected overdose of painkillers.

Sources at the coroner⿿s office revealed that his brain was removed before his body was released to relatives the next day.

A forensic neuropathologist will test Jackson⿿s brain for, among other things, past drug use and whether he has suffered overdoses in the past.

The brain can also show any past abuse of alcohol or if the deceased had suffered from any one of a number of diseases. The source said that removing the brain is the ⿿only way to carry out the tests⿝.

⿿The tissue has to be examined,⿝ he said. ⿿I can⿿t tell you how long that is going to take.⿝

One expert explained that the Jackson family could decide to wait and bury the brain with the rest of the body. But it is far more common for the lab to burn the remains once they⿿ve been examined or for them to be placed into the grave at a later date.

⿿It⿿s up to the family. They can bury him and then bury the brain later on,⿝ said Dr Cyril Wecht, a former coroner and one of America⿿s foremost forensic pathologists.

But he added: ⿿It⿿s rare for the body to be held back for two weeks or more.⿝

Probably won't watch, I haven't paid much attention. I did like that for a brief time after his death, they went back to playing videos on Mtv, it's been years since they've done that.

I don't think I would want to bury a loved one without their brain...Not that I've ever given this kinda thing any thought but, it just doesn't seem right somehow...Of course I've got all these Catholic hangups regarding death anyway. ::rollseyes::
