TOLEDO, Ohio – A nurse accidentally disposed of a kidney from a living donor this month at an Ohio hospital, and doctors tried unsuccessfully for at least two hours to resuscitate the organ in what medical experts describe as a rare accident, health officials said.

"Human error rendered the kidney unusable," University of Toledo Medical Center spokesman Toby Klinger said Saturday, but he declined to give more details, citing the hospital's investigation into what happened and its respect for the privacy of the patients involved.

But one of the doctors involved told Dr. David Grossman, a Toledo-Lucas County health commissioner, that a nurse disposed of the kidney improperly. Two nurses have been placed on paid administrative leave while the hospital reviews what happened, Klinger said.

Grossman told the Blade newspaper in Toledo that a man had donated the kidney to his older sister. Both the donor and the intended recipient have been released from the hospital, Klinger said.

The hospital has voluntarily suspended the live kidney donor program while they review what happened and determine how to prevent errors in the future, according to Dr. Jeffrey Gold, the medical center's chancellor and vice president for biosciences and health affairs.

A young mother and her two infant children were strangled to death by her ex-con friend, police revealed on Friday, as the friend was charged with their murder.

23-year-old Heather Jackson's body was found brutally slain at her home in Ohio on Saturday, alongside her three-year-old daughter Celina and son, Wayne, aged 18 months.

All three died of strangulation, a coroner found, and police are investigating the identity of a murder weapon.
The man allegedly behind the killings, 41-year-old Curtis Clinton, was charged with three counts of aggravated murder, seven months after being released from a 13-year term for assault and involuntary manslaughter.

Police say he was invited into Jackson's home, where the bodies were later found.
Concerned friends had asked officers to check on the young mother, having not heard from her all day, and at around 8pm police made the grisly discovery.

Jackson's lifeless body had been shoved between a mattress and a bed frame, with her children's hidden inside a closet, NorwalkRegister.com reported.

She and her children had lived in the property for around a month, police said, and she had known Clinton for about five months.

It is not yet known what his motive was but police say he has a lengthy criminal history including the assault and manslaughter conviction, over the death of 18-year-old Misty Keckler in 1997.

She was found dead from strangulation in a Fostoria mobile home and Clinton pleaded guilty two years later.

At this stage officers say they believe Clinton acted without an accomplice, though they are continuing to investigate and conduct interviews.

He was arrested on Monday from the Bellevue Hospital, where he was receiving unspecified treatment.

Already facing charges of raping a 13-year-old girl, the registered sex offender is being held on $3million bond.

He is being held in the Erie County Jail, where he will stay until another court appearance next Tuesday.

Lawyers: Obese Ohio inmate faces 'torturous' death

Attorneys for a condemned inmate who weighs 480 pounds argue he faces a torturous and lingering death if his execution is carried out early next year.

Ronald Post, who shot and killed a hotel clerk in northern Ohio almost 30 years ago, says his weight, vein access, scar tissue and other medical problems raise the likelihood of severe problems with an execution.

Lawyers for the 53-year-old Post also said in their federal court filing Friday the inmate is so big the execution gurney might not hold him.

The filing also said Post is discouraged from walking because he is at risk for falling, and suffers depression that affects his eating. What does this matter? He shouldn't walk? So wheel his ass.

Post is scheduled to die Jan. 16 for the 1983 shooting death of hotel desk clerk Helen Vantz in Elyria.

Toledo Police say a grandmother and uncle may have killed three children with carbon monoxide poisoning in an apparent custody dispute with the children's parents.

Inside the garage was a Dodge truck running with hoses leading from the exhaust into a Honda Civic. Inside of the Honda were Sandy Ford, 32-year-old Andy Ford, 10-year-old Paige Hayes, 6-year-old Logan Hayes and 5-year-old Madalyn Hayes along with two dogs and a cat. All were deceased.
