Young Couple's Double Homicide Stuns Small Ohio Town
Feb 23, 2011

Authorities in Ohio are investigating the double homicide of a young couple who were found shot in the head over the weekend.

The bodies of Cord Cox, 23, and his 25-year-old girlfriend, Betheny Mehall, were discovered Sunday afternoon in a vehicle parked on a remote road in Ashtabula County, about 50 miles southwest of Cleveland. Authorities have not named a suspect or person of interest in the killings.
"Who could do something this terrible to such great people? It's hard to take in," Cox's friend, Mike Brenneman, told AOL News. "You see stuff like this happen on the news but don't expect it to happen."

The Ashtabula County Sheriff's Office said it received a call from a passing motorist about 4 p.m. Sunday, notifying them that a motorist in distress was parked by a snow mound on an isolated road in Harpersfield Township. The vehicle was still running when deputies arrived. Inside, they found Cox slouched over the steering wheel and Mehall slumped over on the passenger seat.

Coroner's investigator Richard Mongell said the preliminary autopsy indicates Cox and Mehall each died from a single bullet to the back of the head.

"They were shot from behind, inside the vehicle," Mongell told AOL News. "We believe [the killings] happened sometime Saturday night."

Authorities have ruled out a murder-suicide and do not suspect the killings were committed during a robbery, but they are still trying to determine a motive.

"It looks like a double homicide," Ashtabula County Sheriff William Johnson told The Star Beacon. He also said that solving the crime is "priority No. 1."

Brenneman said that Cox and Mehall were well-known in the community and did not have any known enemies. "Everyone loved them," he said. "Cord and Betheny were inspirational to the young people in this town."

Cox, who was born and raised in nearby Austinburg, was a 2005 graduate of Geneva High School. At the time of his death, he was enrolled in nursing classes at Lakeland Community College in Kirtland.

Interestingly, Cox left a left an ominous message on his Facebook profile in January that read "I'm 23 now but will I live to see 24[?] I don't know my lucks runnin out fool." Friends believe the message was prompted by Cox's adventurous lifestyle that included a love for snowboarding and wrestling.

Mehall, who was the mother of a 4-year-old son, was a 2003 graduate of the Ashtabula County Joint Vocational School. She was a nursing student at Bryant and Stratton College and worked with Northwest Ambulance District in Ashtabula.

According to Brenneman, Cox and Mehall were very much in love and had been together for about two years. "They were very happy together," he said.

The couple's death comes amid other homicides in small Ohio towns in recent months.

Howard, about 150 miles southwest of Ashtabula, was the scene of a triple homicide in November. Matthew Hoffman, a 30-year-old ex-con and unemployed tree trimmer, murdered Stephanie Sprang, 41, her friend Tina Herrmann, 32, and Herrmann's 11-year-old son, Kody Maynard. The victims were dismembered and stuffed in a 60-foot-tall hollowed-out tree.

The only survivor of the brutal home invasion murders was Herrmann's 13-year-old daughter, who was held captive and sexually assaulted for four days inside Hoffman's home.

On Jan. 6, Hoffman pleaded guilty to 10 felonies, including aggravated murder, burglary, kidnapping and rape. He was sentenced to life without parole.

In Holland, approximately 170 miles west of Ashtabula, authorities found the bodies of Johnny Clarke, 21, and his girlfriend, Lisa Straub, 20, with bags over their heads and their hands bound with duct tape on Jan. 31. Police say the couple were victims of a homicide. According to the preliminary autopsy result, they died from asphyxiation.

The home was ransacked, but there were no signs of forced entry. Police suspect that the attackers either knew the victims and walked into the house via an open door or had asked the occupants to allow them entry.

Brenneman said that right now, Cox's and Mehall's families are hoping for swift justice.

"What they want right now, more than anything, is for anyone who might have any information to contact the sheriff's department," he said. "That's the biggest thing. They are asking for any possible leads they can get right now because they want to catch the animal responsible."

In the meantime, people have been sharing their condolences online at a Facebook page titled "RIP Cord Cox & Betheny Mehall." There, text, video and photo tributes are being shared as loved ones prepare to say goodbye to the two young people during separate funerals scheduled for this week.

"Cord and Betheny always did things together," Brenneman said. "They were a team in life, and they went as a team in death. I don't think either one of them would have wanted it any other way."

The case remains unsolved.

JEFFERSON — An investigation into the shooting deaths of a local man and woman is “priority number one” of the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Department, according to Sheriff William Johnson.

The victims, found seated Sunday afternoon in a vehicle parked at the end of a Harpersfield Township road, were identified as Cord A. Cox, 23, Route 307, Austinburg Township; and Betheny D. Mehall, 25, County Line Road North, Geneva; said Richard Mongell, Ashtabula County coroner’s investigator. Autopsies were scheduled to be conducted today, Mongell said.

Johnson released little information Monday, saying he did not want to jeopardize the investigation. There are no suspects, but deputies spent Sunday night and Monday pursuing a number of leads.

“We’re trying to gather as much information as we can,” he said.

A motive has not been determined, but investigators have ruled out a murder-suicide, Johnson said. Robbery or a carjacking also appears unlikely, he said.

“It looks like a double homicide,” he said.

The vehicle was found on Bishop Road a short distance from Harpersfield Road, Johnson said. Deputies went to the scene in response to a call from a passer-by who reported a motorist in distress, he said. The auto was parked at a point where Bishop Road ended because of mounded snow, Johnson said.

Cox was found behind the steering wheel, while Mehall was in the front passenger seat, Johnson said. He declined to comment on the location and number of the wounds, prior to the release of preliminary autopsy reports.

Mongell also declined to discuss the wounds, saying he did not want to compromise the deputies’ investigation. He did confirm the bodies were found in the vehicle.

Johnson said deputies have an idea what type of weapon was used in the killings but declined to elaborate. Some evidence also was collected at the scene, he said.

The vehicle was found with the engine running and the heater turned on, Johnson said. Some decomposition of the bodies had begun, he said.

Cox was last heard from around 7:45 p.m. Saturday, Johnson said.

The vehicle was found in an area that may be in the range of nearby surveillance cameras, Johnson said. Deputies will be studying footage from the cameras for clues, he said.

“We’re doing a lot of follow-up,” Johnson said.

Charla Rhodes, Cox’s aunt, commenting Monday afternoon, said the family hadn’t been told a possible motive for the shootings. Cox was born and raised in the Austinburg area and was a graduate of Geneva High School, she said. He was a nursing student at Lakeland Community College, Rhodes said.

Rhodes tearfully recalled a young man who was “very family-oriented” and enjoyed snowboarding and riding all-terrain vehicles.

“He had just returned from a (snowboarding) trip with friends,” she said.

Cox and Mehall were dating, Rhodes said. Mehall has a 4-year-old son, Rhodes said.

A person reached at Mehall’s home Monday night said the family would have no comment and asked the public to respect the family’s privacy.

Mehall was a 2003 graduate of the Ashtabula County Joint Vocational School and a nursing student at Bryant and Stratton College, according to a funeral notice.

A statement from Betheny's family.
On Wednesday, Mehall's family issued a statement:

"As you can imagine, we are devastated at this news. Our family is attempting to come to grips with this awful situation. We are grieving personally, and also our hearts go out to the family of Cord Cox.'

"We are so proud that Betheny was actively pursuing her nursing degree from Bryant and Stratton College and recently received an Advisors Honor for Academic Excellence. She was looking forward to the next stage in her life and we were fully in support of her efforts."

" Betheny was committed to her community and an auxiliary member of the North West Ambulance District. Her largest commitment, however, was to family. Betheny was a dedicated and nurturing mother to her 4 year old son. Being there for him always came first."

"In her short 25 years, Betheny, made more people smile and touched more lives than most do in a lifetime. She lived her life to the fullest everyday and her enthusiasm for life was contagious."

"While we understand the media interest in this tragedy, we will not be planning to do any news interviews at this time. We are cooperating fully with the authorities on their investigation of the crime. The Ashtabula County Sheriff's Department should be contacted for any additional details. Thank you for understanding our personal situation and respecting our privacy at this most difficult of times."

Definitely. Nothing's been said about what they were out doing that night. I also haven't seen any speculation about how the killer got away (an associate waiting for him? he had a vehicle parked nearby?)

I'm curious about the biological father of the 4 yr old boy. Does he live in OH? Was he on friendly/speaking terms w/Betheny Mehall?
It's the hint of arsenic that gives it that extra kick.

This one's strange. Wonder if it's possible that the couple picked up a hitchhiker.
