ABC
Police searching for Susan Cox Powell in a Utah desert have found remains that “almost certainly human”, according to ABC News affiliate ABC4. It is not yet known whether they belong to Powell, the mother of two from West Valley City, Utah, who disappeared in 2009.

Cadaver dogs that had been combing the fields around Topaz Mountain, near Delta, Utah, found the remains today, according to the report.

Police said the remains are almost certainly human, not animal, though gender or how long they have been there could not yet be determined, the report said. A medical examiner has been brought to the scene, police told ABC4.

A reporter from the Salt Lake City Tribune tweeted that the West Valley Police, who are leading the investigation into Powell’s disappearance and death, are treating the area as a crime scene and are awaiting Juab County, Utah, sheriff’s officers to arrive to process the remains.

Topaz Mountain • Police searching for Susan Cox Powell found human remains Wednesday but do not yet know whether they belong to the woman who disappeared almost two years ago.

Several cadaver dogs confirmed remains discovered just before 2 p.m. were human, said West Valley City police Lt. Bill Merritt. He did not know how old the remains are and would not say how intact they were.

Investigators ended their search of the area and excavation of the remains for the day at about 4 p.m. Merritt said it was getting too late for personnel from the Utah Medical Examiner’s office to travel and they will arrive Thursday morning instead.

Two detectives will camp overnight with the remains to protect the scene.

"There’s no hurry," Merritt said. "This is something we do not want to rush."

Wednesday’s discovery comes on a third day of a police search of the remote area on all-terrain vehicles, traversing dirt trails and sagebrush and checking some abandoned mines.

About six ATV riders spread out and drove slowly across the valley floor in a search pattern Wednesday. In the other direction, five cadaver dogs and handlers searched underneath trees and in gullies.

"We’re focusing on areas that make sense — close to roads, ravines,"said Merritt.

Why has it taken so long to have cadaver dogs search this area?
It's the hint of arsenic that gives it that extra kick.

i'm going to be surprised if it's Susan. there are so many miles of desert, so many bodies out there, so many old mine shafts. a shallow burial would have been extremely stupid when a mine shaft would have hidden her forever. but for the sake of her family i hope it is her. i hope they know today, if there is a skull and teeth there will be no need to wait for DNA.
i also sincerely hope josh and his perverted father are twitching with fear. oh it will be a joy to see them in cuffs and shackles.
and the boys need to be removed from that poisonous sick household. before josh takes them on a midnight camping trip to Canada.

ABC reporting with some comments from her Father and Josh:
http://abcnews.go.com/US/susan-powell-my...d=14525301

"It does bother me that it's in the same general area, and the more I learn about the location, the more it bothers me," Susan Powell's father, CC, said.

Still, CC holds out hope that his daughter, who was 28 when she disappeared, is still alive.

"They have not identified these as her remains yet. She could still be out there, maybe alive," CC said.

And yeah right...sounds like he is trying to get a dig in on LE and the media. He is still seen as the only POI.
Josh Powell, 35, released a statement after the discovery of the remains that read, "With very little information available to the public, we can only hope that additional information is released quickly to minimize heartache to those of us who love Susan. In the meantime, we continue to hope for Susan's safe return."

what for??

SLT
Topaz Mountain • Anthropologists from the U.S. Bureau of Land Management were expected to arrive here Thursday morning to determine whether remains found as part of a police search for Susan Cox Powell are Native American. Indian96Indian

The Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act requires federal agencies to return Native American remains to lineal descendants and culturally affiliated Indian tribes. If anthropologists say the remains are not Native American or cannot make a determination on scene, then a state medical examiner will travel from Salt Lake City to excavate the remains, said West Valley City Police Lt. Bill Merritt.

If the BLM says the remains are too old to belong to Powell, "we’ll just move on," Merritt said. Meanwhile, police on all-terrain vehicles and cadaver dogs and handlers began a fourth day of searching for Susan Powell Thursday morning.

(KUTV) SALT LAKE CITY - Missing Utah woman Susan Powell's father arrived at the Salt Lake International Airport Thursday afternoon for more information in the continued search for his daughter.

Chuck Cox arrived in Salt Lake from Washington state shortly after noon on reports that human remains had been found in the desert 20 miles west of Delta in Juab County during a search led by West Valley police.

squirm josh you useless weenie.

TOPAZ MOUNTAIN, Utah, (ABC 4 News) - Human remains found by in the Juab County wilderness were determined to be "recent" according to the West Valley City Police.

WVC Police Lt. Bill Merritt said that the earth near the remains also appeared to be recently "disturbed," but would not say whether the site appeared to be a shallow grave or anything like it.

The new information does not rule out the possibility that the remains could belong to Susan Cox Powell, who has been missing since December of 2009.

The announcement of the "recent" remains certainly places the new information within a time frame that could connect the new evidence to the Powell disappearance.

The BLM forensic anthropologist said the remains were "fairly recent," meaning they're not part of an ancient Indian burial ground, as has been suggested by Josh Powell, the husband of Susan Cox Powell, the West Valley City mom who's been missing since December 2009.

Shocked to hear from @KUTV2News that no 'remains' found yet. Dogs still alerting. PD digging carefully. #findsusan
"The dogs are still smelling something, but we have not come across bones," Merritt said. "We have not come across clothing."

The excavation and additional police searches of the area were set to resume at 9 a.m. Friday. The dig will continue as long as the cadaver dogs — able to detect remains buried as much as 12 feet deep — are indicating, said Merritt.

first 'there were bones' and now there is nothing but dog hits? someone is running some game here. hopefully on that faggoty weenie liar josh.

Salt Lake Tribune
Topaz Mountain • West Valley City police on Friday morning began a fifth day of searching for signs of Susan Cox Powell, sifting through dirt dug in an area where cadaver dogs have indicated there are human remains.

A forensics team has arrived here and is now looking for bone fragments or anything foreign to the area in the dirt. If any fragments are found, the state Medical Examiner will be called to the scene.

Once the sifting process is finished, the team will assist in continued excavation at the site, which Bureau of Land Management archaeologist Joelle McCarthy has determined is less than 10 years old based on soil disturbance. Investigators by Thursday evening had dug an area about 2 feet wide and 1 foot deep at the site but did not discover any bones before stopping for the day at 6 p.m.

“Hopefully we’ll start to find something [at the excavation site] the deeper we go,” said West Valley City Police Lt. Bill Merritt. “If we don’t find anything we are going to have to make a decision. But the dogs are continuing to indicate inside the hole. The leads us to believe that there is something down there.”

Cadaver dogs have been able to detect remains buried as much as 12 feet deep, said Merritt.

Meanwhile, detectives on all-terrain vehicles and cadaver dogs and handlers resumed their search. Susan Powell’s father, Chuck Cox, was expected to be at the site Friday afternoon.

presser right now Lt. Merritt says it could be days before they are done digging/sifting. it's very slow. and frustrating as hell.
this isn't CSI.

I can't tell if LE originally exaggerated the find in hopes of getting Josh to do something incriminating, or if they are now minimizing what was found until it can be confirmed and an arrest can be made. It does seem like there is some strategic game playing going on (or just very poor wording by LE in their media-quoted statements)...

This quote gives me hope that something uncovered in the recent search of Steve Powell's home and the vehicles may have led LE to the current search location.

"We’re hoping it’s a really good lead for us," Chief Nielsen said. "There is some information we received lately that says they [Susan and Josh Powell] were out here."

I believe susan and josh got in an argument the night he went camping and susan took off with steve kersher.

It seems strange that he went camping in sub degree temps to many of us; however, they have done this before. There are photos of susan the kids and josh camping in the winter with snow on the ground.

I would like to believe that Susan Powell and Steve Koecher ran off together and are still alive, but it doesn't make sense. I'm glad the possibility was investigated, but there is a reason LE has ruled out any connection. To believe that Susan ran off with Steven, you have to believe the following:

1. The two had a relationship: in spite of the fact that neither of them ever told anyone, they were never seen together, there was never any record of communication between the two, Susan never wrote about Steven or a male friend in her journal...

2. Susan would leave her boys to run off with an unemployed secret male friend.

3. Susan would allow her family and friends to live in agony and her boys to be in the custody of Josh so she could live a life of hiding with Steven.

4. Steven would allow his friends and family to live in agony so he could live a life of hiding with Susan.

While they are close in age and lived in the same general area when they both disappeared, there is no connection between their disappearances. Yes, both are LDS Mormons, but so is 65% of Utah.

Nah, Josh and Steven Powell really want people to believe Susan ran off with a man because she was so overtly sexual. They are attempting to make Susan the wrong-doer and themselves the victims. Steven going missing around the same time as Susan just gave them a name to attach to their fictional man. Nothing supports the contention that Susan willingly abandoned her boys. The Powells are deflecting, imo...

West Valley City police have concluded an investigation into a shallow grave found during a search of Utah's West Desert for clues in the disappearance of Susan Cox Powell.

KSL

DELTA — Police have found about 100 pieces of what appears to be charred wood with some human decomposition on them. They are unsure of how long it has been there, but they said it is likely that there was a crime scene at the dig site at some point.
Hopes for an end to the mystery of Susan Cox Powell’s disappearance were cut short when police found what cadaver dogs here had been alerting their handlers to: charred wood apparently used to burn human remains.

West Valley police expected the effort to search a suspected shallow grave would pick up significantly Saturday and investigators could get back to digging deeper into the ground by early afternoon. Mid-afternoon, they found the blackened pieces that ranged from dime to golf-ball sizes. They will be taken back to the state for analysis. More police are expected to arrive Sunday to continue the search.

DELTA — West Valley police Saturday completed their digging at what they originally suspected was a disturbed gravesite and removed about 100 small pieces of what appeared to be charred wood.

Once the pieces were removed from the hole near Topaz Mountain that investigators had been digging since Wednesday, cadaver dogs trained to detect human decomposition stopped indicating there was something still in the hole and reacted to the collected pile of pieces.

"These charred pieces had something to do with decomposition," said West Valley Police Lt. Bill Merritt.

That means at some point, the charred pieces very likely came in contact with either blood or decomposing flesh or clothing that contained some of that material, he said.

As for how human decomposition got on the charred pieces, Merritt said, "There are so many different scenarios of what it could be."

It was unlikely the apparent wood gave the cadaver dogs a "false positive," Merritt stated. The cadaver dogs are trained to detect human decomposition as opposed to flakes of dead skin. He also noted it was interesting that the charred pieces were found buried about 2 ½ feet in the ground.

Merritt said the area was likely a crime scene at some point. Although he noted the charred pieces appeared to have been fairly recent, there was no way to tell how long they had been there.

The discovery ended several days of digging after nearly a dozen cadaver dogs "hit" on an area in a remote part of central Utah near Topaz Mountain outside of Delta. The discovery was made while police were searching for clues in the case of missing West Valley mother Susan Cox Powell.

The search of the area will continue Sunday. Merritt said it was possible additional police agencies would join and there could be a very large search effort.

As for the hole they had been digging in and sifting through for four days, it is now cleared. "There is nothing else that can be brought out of that hole," the lieutenant said.

Police said the burnt wood pieces would be examined by a forensic specialist.Police say the charred pieces likely came in contact with either blood, decomposing flesh or clothing that contained some of that material. it's now up to the Utah State Medical Examiner's Office.

The search for clues in the disappearance of Susan Cox Powell continued Sunday, though its focus shifted to the west side of Topaz Mountain.
