Tipping
#21
I generally tip about 20%, more or less depending on the service. I would not go to a place that added a mandatory 25% tip to the bill.

Funny about the cops always facing the door. My husband, who was never a cop, always needs to face the door in restaurants. He says it is so he is sure he can protect me if anything happens. Unfortunately, that means all to often, I end up looking at a back wall or the door to the kitchen.

My boss is a fantastic tipper, I've even seen her tip the girl in the drive thru window at Starbucks but she has an awful habit in restaurants that horrifies me. As we prepare to leave she raises her arm, gets the servers attention and snaps her fingers. I inwardly cringe every time, she thinks nothing of it & I'm not telling her.

i like to tip well for good service, but would not want the percentage to be mandatory. nope. then they may slack off thinking they didn't have to make an effort.

LC brought up one reason to always pay, we paid up front because we never knew if we would be called away before we finished eating, if we got a call we could just go without stopping to pay before we rolled out.

we liked the little windowless room and ate there as often as we could.

I tip a good third if it is a large bill, $5 at Waffle House. Cracker isn't cheap. Plus, I used to have to do that shit to get through college so I figure somebody else is doing the same thing. If they aren't they can at least get good and drunk with my tip.

Pizza is different, I give $5 usually because they already charge a trip fee. We don't order pizza much, once every few months.

Me, too. They should only do that to black people. They are horrible tippers. (Sorry, may be racist, but totally TRUE. AND they want a hookup every time. Black people always ask for free salad bar.)

You hit the nail on the head. If you were EVER in the business, you're probably a great tipper.

On my Mum's Thriver Cruise, gratuity was included.

My brothers, Mum and I each tipped our servers an additonal $50 each, for their outstanding service.

Tiki's family knows good service and appreciates competent and hard workers.

Also the fact they weren't black or Jews . . .

This brings up an interesting point -the stereotype of tipping. I have seen several studies that generally say females are the worst tippers. With that in mind, I tend to tip more generously than the average consumer, because I want to break the stereotype.

In "fine dining" my tip is definitely tied to the level of service received. If the service meets my overall expectation of the dining experience, I will tip as close to 20% as possible considering rounding. I only round-up if the service was exceptional.

In small, local places, where the price of the meal is usually inexpensive but the service is great, I tip more generously (over 20%), because I want to help the local business stay in business. In this case I generally "round up" from 20%.

I chain places, I tip according to the service received. If the service is more than "good"...just that extra step, I will tip more than 20% with rounding up to the next full $. If the service is bad, don't expect more than 10% from me.

OT a bit: Cracker, I believe that laughter is a perfect medicine and you definitely help me break into a nice strong laugh almost every day! Smiley_emoticons_smile Yes I am being sincere here. I just wish you would change your avatar back to the mean guy.

Mock is all about off topic.

I'm glad you realize I'm joking. Many people think I'm totally serious. (OK, I was serious about the black people tipping thing and being really loud, oh and about poor people being a bit lazy and expecting me to pay their medical bills, but other than that I'm mostly kidding.)

Does anybody bother to deduct the taxes before tipping? I've heard that's completely appropriate but I've never done it.

Nah. I don't begrudge the dollar. I always tip cash, too, so they don't have to claim it, even if I pay with plastic. Smiley_emoticons_smile

I was a bartender for 10 years (2nd job) and I always tip 30 - 50 percent for good service & 20 for okay service. But I will tell you black people are the worst I worked in Washington DC & Maryland and they don't tip worth a shit & they always want water with lemon, nitpick everything and run you ass off and then leave you a couple dollars and want you to kiss their ass for giving you that much. My daughter is in college and got a job as a waitress & I remember after her first week serving she came home crying saying how did you do it mom she said all the black people are running me to death, talking to me like shit & wont tip me. I told her some shit doesn't change. She bartend's now in Upper NW DC now & does well.

do you tip salon owner? i don't go very often, but when i go it's a high-end (read big bucks $$$) shop. i finally found a good one up here, it took a couple years. the shop owner did my excellent cut and color and i gave her big wads of cash. TREASURE SOMEONE WHO GETS IT RIGHT! indulge them. shower them with gratuities and limos! hah

I only tip the person who handles my hair & that's Stephan, he's not the owner. I have a personal relationship with him & I'm quite fond of him, we have agreed to grow old together. It took me a long time to find him & I'm completely monogamous to him. He's the one who taught me to embrace my curls & have fun with color. I love him...I also love not spending a friggin' hour blowing my hair straight every day.

I brought that up because I worked a salon for 13 years and not all people tip. Fortunately I worked in an upscale salon and the tips and perks were very good. I also gave excellent customer service and earned them. If you were my client; I always ran on time, I would have your favorite magazine and drink waiting, I knew when your anniversary and birthday were, knew all about the kids and pets and I gave the best hand and foot job you've ever receive in your lifetime. It's all about customer service when it comes to tipping industries. There's always going to be someone down the road who offers the same as you and will take your business if you don't provide the service expected.
