CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Police arrested a Maryland man in Charlotte Thursday in connection with the death of his wife and disappearance of his stepson, officials said.

Curtis Maurice Lopez, 45, was taken into custody around 9:30 am Thursday at the Econo Lodge on Independence Boulevard in East Charlotte.

Lopez was being sought after Montgomery County, Maryland Police found his wife, Jane McQuain, dead inside their Germantown, Md. condo Wednesday evening.

McQuain's son, 11-year old William, was not found with Lopez as police had hoped. They are now clinging to hope the boy is still alive and with relatives, but admit the likelihood of that is decreasing as time goes by.

GERMANTOWN, Md. (WJZ)

His mother Jane McQuain was found dead inside her bedroom Wednesday night in the 13100-block of Briarcliff Terrace. At the same time, police realized her son was missing. The 51-year-old may have foreshadowed her own death.

McQuain’s estranged husband, 45-year-old Curtis Lopez, is charged with her murder.

In a chilling new revelation, McQuain’s ex-boyfriend told reporters she feared something bad could happen to her. That she was worried about her safety after Lopez recently came back into her life.

“You have to have a key to get in that door, and I kept hearing him going in the door,” a neighbor being identified as “Sis” said.

McQuain’s neighbor says Lopez had been visiting for several days, even driving her car around.

Police found that Honda CRV and Lopez outside a Charlotte, N.C. Econo Lodge.

A witness watched it unfold.

“They told me to grab my daughter,” she said. “I sat in the lobby, and I came back. I seen the dude getting arrested.”

Pennsylvania records show Lopez was in prison from 1987 to 2000, when he was released on parole.

Now, he’s back in police custody, but investigators are not revealing what if anything he’s saying about the boy’s whereabouts.

William hasn’t been to class at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School since Sept. 30.

“I hope he hasn’t killed him,” Sis said. “I swear to God I do. I hope they haven’t. Oh God.”

Close friends say Lopez and McQuain were married for 12 years, but they split up in 2007.

Police say they’ve shifted all their energy to finding William McQuain. He’s described as being 5 feet and weighs 85 pounds. They are not revealing what Lopez is saying about the boy’s whereabouts.

cocksucker Lopez is the only suspect in the disappearance of the boy and he is not cooperating with police.

Pennsylvania Deparment of Corrections confirmed with News4 that Lopez had been part of a riot while in the Camp Hill prison that extended his incarceration. They did not immediately make available the original charges he was imprisoned for.

McQuain's 11-year-old son, William, remains missing. Maryland State Police issued an Amber Alert for the boy, who has not been seen since September 30.

Two prayer gatherings for William will be held Friday night. His football team is holding one at 7:30 p.m. at the Germantown Community Center. His church will hold one at his school, Martin Luther King Middle School.

Yeah, unless he stashed him with someone as unscrupulous as he is, it doesn't look good. Fucker...whatever was going on with the wife, leave the kid out of it!

What a cutie! I fear for this boy too. He's been missing for 2 weeks. Hopefully the dad sperm donor left him with a friend (I'm guessing LE has contacted family by now). I wish we could waterboard these guys.[/i]

Washington Post
“A real mild-mannered, respectful kid,” one of his coaches, Xavier Twine, said Friday. “He was one the kids who stood there, eyes at attention, looking at the coaches.”

Police were still trying to determine why it took two weeks for anyone to report the boy or his mother missing. The two lived in an apartment on Briarcliff Terrace in Germantown. Police said they first learned of possible trouble Wednesday. They got into the apartment through a window.

Inside, police found the body of Jane McQuain, 51, and no sign of William. On Friday, the Maryland state medical examiner ruled her death a homicide and said she died of stab wounds and blunt force trauma.

Officials have said it appears that McQuain had been dead for at least several days. On Friday, they declined to give a more specific time frame.

Inside the apartment, “we’ve got no indication that there was any struggle involving” William, Montgomery Police Chief J. Thomas Manger said Friday.

At first, he said, police picked up information that William might have left on a planned trip with Lopez. They hoped that when the found Lopez, they would find William, Manger said. But when Lopez was picked up Thursday morning in North Carolina, there was no sign of his stepson.

Detectives have spoken with relatives, friends and neighbors of Jane and William McQuain, Starks said. The detectives picked up signs that they might both have still been alive through the first weekend of October.

Police are searching Damascus Recreational Park in Md. for the body of William McQuain, the 11-year-old Germantown boy missing since September 30.

In addition to Damascus, police are searching Little Bennett Regional Park in Clarksburg, MD.

Police have been at both locations since mid-morning after information developed by detectives led them there.

A police spokesperson said they are "hoping he is alive."

The area is very thickly wooded. Officers were searching on horseback as well.

Heartbreaking. I only hope that if he's dead, he didn't witness his mother being killed, and if his father killed him, that he was asleep or hit from behind.

Curtis Lopez waived an extradition hearing on Monday and will be taken back to Maryland to face charges related to the killing of his estranged wife.

Lopez appeared in Mecklenburg Court around 2 p.m. shackled and wearing an orange Mecklenburg jail uniform. He's been charged with murder in connection with the death of Jane McQuain.

Her 11-year-old son has been missing since late September and police held out hope that William McQuain was with Lopez until the 46-year-old was arrested in Charlotte last week.

Police investigators and volunteer groups combed another park in Maryland for William on Monday.

Jane McQuain. Her body, beaten and stabbed, was found Wednesday night in her condominium in Germantown, Md. (she was stabbed in the back.)

Police told the Associated Press they had received tips that the boy's body could be found in a wooded area in a park.

Damn. Well, Maryland has the death penalty. But, like most states, it's not often carried out. I bet this boy saw his mother killed and he was killed to silence him. Rest in peace, young William.
