I understand. Hell, I use the same technique myself on occasion - Break one of the legs and leave the functional parts intact. Splint the leg, administer a wide spectrum antibiotic and Bobs your uncle.

My neighbors are accustomed to my odd behaviour, but I think I might have to foot the bill for the lower leg repair.

Make sure to wait long enough to see if they start gnawing on their leg before you rescue them. Anthropologists have itched for decades to investigate in situ if urban humans are as intelligent as the average badger.
