Police say at least seven people, including a gunman, were killed in a shooting at a Sikh temple near Milwaukee Sunday.

Police were called to the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin in the suburb of Oak Creek on Sunday morning, when witnesses said several dozen people were gathering for a service. They responded with a dozen ambulances.

Greenfield Police Chief Bradley Wentlandt said four people were found dead inside the temple, while three, including the suspected shooter, were found dead outside. Police say they don't think there is a second shooter involved.

Wentlandt said the shooting suspect opened fire on an officer and the officer "put down" that man. Wentlandt said the officer was shot multiple times.

He described the scene as chaotic and fluid and urged the media not to broadcast photos or video showing tactical units, which could put officers in danger.

Three shooting victims, all men, were taken to Froederdt Hospital in Milwaukee, the main trauma center for the area, spokeswoman Carolyn Bellin said. One was in the operating room, another in a surgical intensive care unit and the third was being evaluated in the emergency room, she said.

According to the Journal Sentinel, there could be as many as 30 victims; among those shot was the president of the temple.

A text message sent to a Journal Sentinel reporter stated that there were two shooters, and children were possibly taken hostage.

“Since I’ve been alderman, for about three years, there has never been any trouble, or any problems,” County Alderman Dan Jakupczyk told Fox News of the temple. “They have been good citizens.”

Greenfield Police Chief Bradley Wentlandt told reporters that a police officer arriving on the scene engaged an active shooter and that the officer was shot multiple times. The officer is expected to recover, Wentlandt said. He said the shooter was “put down.”

One of the temple's committee members, Ven Boba Ri, told the Journal Sentinel that based on communication with people inside the temple, the shooter was a white male in his 30s.

"It's sad, I don't know how to describe it," said Ri, who has been fielding calls all morning from around the world, including India.

"Sikhism is such a peaceful religion. We have suffered for generations, in India and even here."

Oak Creek is south of Milwaukee along Lake Michigan.

Awful, awful, awful :(

I expected another one of these but not this soon.

What do you wanna bet some fundy rednecks out there will think Sikhs are Muslims and somehow it's related to Islam. Right after 9/11, some yahoo shot and killed a Sikh man in a convenience store because he thought the turban meant Muslim.

Serious answer. No, it doesn't strike me like that. That said, I haven't read any details, only heard TV news.

I do agree that there are some people who just flip out, all on their own, and do bad things. I just also think that not all mass shootings are that.

I heard this guy had some 911 tattoo so maybe he got Sikhs mixed up with Arab Muslims.

I also want to make clear that even though I support the Bill of Rights and the right bear arms, I don't like guns, have never owned one, have been a vegetarian all of my adult life, and abhor violence of all kinds, including hunting and the killing of animals. So, just because I understand the concept of a well armed population being the best deterrent to a tyrannical government (or a home invader), I hate that violence is a reality in our world. I would agree to gun control if governments were TOTALLY disarmed first.

Sikh temple shooter who gunned down six was former Fort Bragg soldier believed to be a skinhead 'white supremacist with 911 tattoo and was part of race hate group.

(CBS/AP) OAK CREEK, Wis. - The suspect in a shooting that left six people dead at a Sikh temple in suburban Milwaukee on Sunday has been identified as Wade Michael Page, who served in the U.S. Army for about six years.

According to sources in the U.S. Army, Page enlisted in April 1992 and given a less-than-honorable discharge in October 1998. He served at Fort Bliss, Texas, in the psychological operations unit in 1994, and was last stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, attached to the psychological operations unit. The details of his discharge were not immediately clear.

Wade was killed outside the temple in a shootout with police officers after the rampage that left terrified congregants hiding in closets and others texting friends outside for help.

Officials had previously described the suspect as a heavy-set, 40-year-old Caucasian with numerous tattoos.

Sources tell CBS News some unspecified evidence suggests race or ethnicity may have played a role in the violence, but no links to extremist groups have been confirmed.

Very sad situation, again...

It will be interesting to see the details of Page's less-than-honorable release from the Army's psychological operations unit, imo.

So-called "Psy-Ops" specialists are responsible for the analysis, development and distribution of intelligence used for information and psychological effect; they research and analyse methods of influencing foreign populations.

note: it was determined page shot himself.

Fox
MILWAUKEE – Misty Cook, the ex-girlfriend of the man suspected of killing six worshippers at a Sikh temple before a police officer shot and killed him, was arrested on a weapons charge, law enforcement officials told FoxNews.com.

The gun was found during a search of the South Milwaukee home where Cook lives, sources said. The weapon, which law enforcement sources did not identify, was not involved in Sunday’s attack. A law enforcement source said Cook has a 2002 felony conviction for eluding police, making it illegal for her to possess a gun. She was arrested Sunday night on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm and later released.

Cook, a 31-year-old nursing student, lived with Page at two separate apartments in South Milwaukee and Cudahy, Wis., according to neighbors. She has not been charged in connection with the temple shooting. Sources said Cook will be arrested and processed by the South Milwaukee Police Department.

Jenna Benn, the Anti-Defamation League’s assistant regional director in Chicago told Stars and Stripes that Cook is affiliated with the white-power group Volksfront and is a supporter of the Hammerskin Nation, a Dallas-based white supremacy group. She said Page's ex-girlfriend is a prolific poster on hate forums.

Yes, too soon for Sikh humor!

You guys, it's significant that the people in the temple saw several white men, not just the one who is dead (and won't be telling tales)!
