Fact vs. Fiction: State of the Union
#1
Last night's speech proved to me yet again that President Obama is a hell of an orator.

He's also good at skewing data and stats to pump his record and fit his agenda. Obama's certainly not alone in that regard, there's way too much bullshit flying from both sides of the political aisle, imo. But Obama's got seriously mad skills in that regard. Here are some of the fictionalized facts that the president eloquently weaved into his State of the Union address last night.

Deficit Reduction:
The president claimed that "both parties have worked together to reduce the deficit by more than $2.5 trillion." But that's only an estimate of deficit reduction through fiscal year 2022, and it would be less if the White House used a different starting point.

Manufacturing Job Growth:

Obama touted the growth of 500,000 manufacturing jobs over the past three years, but there has been a net loss of 600,000 manufacturing jobs since he took office. The recent growth also has stalled since July 2012.

Gas/Fuel Performance:
He claimed that "we have doubled the distance our cars will go on a gallon of gas." Actual mileage is improving, but Obama's "doubled" claim refers to a desired miles-per-gallon average for model year 2025.

Obama Care:
Obama said the Affordable Care Act "is helping to slow the growth of health care costs." It may be helping, but the slower growth for health care spending began in 2009, before the law was enacted, and is due at least partly to the down economy.

Someday in the future probably sooner than anyone thinks the cold hand of reality will slap all the googly eyed believers hard in the face. But it will be too late. You can only tell fibs for so long until someone says "Hey look, he's not wearing any clothes".

The Onion's recap might make you smile; it did me.

snipped:
WASHINGTON—Though presiding over a country hampered by war, an economic recession, dramatic cultural upheaval, and a partisan divide at the highest levels of government, the man responsible for shielding American citizens from reality declared tonight in his annual address to Congress that the state of the union is strong.

In a roughly hour-long speech Tuesday, the man burdened with the task of systematically projecting an image of false security to 311 million American citizens affirmed that America’s future is brighter than ever. The man who must never, ever let us know how bad things have really gotten, or how bad they will soon get, also referred to a number of unique challenges ahead, the depth and scope of which he methodically obfuscated and evaded in accordance with the requirements of his elected position.

Barry is now in Atlanta promoting his agenda of putting minority and low income children into pre-school so a child 4 yrs old will be in school. I call it government babysitting.

Who will be paying for that? Taxes? Cutting something else? Isn't a four yr. old a little young to be going to school?

Yes 4 yrs old is to young to be in school. I cannot think of anyone that puts their kids in school that young. There are plenty of government subsidized pre schools already. Fix or help the schools that are already here before adding more headaches.

Child labor . . . training the "new" middle-class.

It's stupid. The concept is akin to just adding a year to elementary school. Why?

A parent that cares about their kids will teach them more than any school could. Lazy parenting run amuck. They will never learn how to tye their shoes.

If we could get them in school even earlier, studies show they would do better in life and parents wouldn't have to deal with that pesky potty training.
