my son is 6'5" and if i ever thought he was mutilated this way i'd have to take out the people responsible. this is extremely offensive, at least to me. ::angrier::

Tall man's legs severed to fit him in coffin?
A former employee is alleging that a South Carolina funeral home took extreme measures, severing James Hines' legs to fit him into his coffin in 2004. Officials exhumed Hines' body Tuesday and found "undesirable evidence," Coroner Hayzen Black said. Hines, who died of cancer, was 6-feet, 5-inches tall. full story
That's a touchy subject ... and a weird one.
i agree it's weird.

hey, monarchs and nobleswere buried sans head, but at least that was intentional. ::cuthead::

this story disgusted me, a coffin could have been made to order.
The funeral home should have advised the family that they didn't have a coffin big enough and given them some options. Have one specially made. Or make the dude fit if they couldnt afford to have one custom made. But at least let them decide.
James doesn't care. I suppose they could have removed his head to make room in the coffin, no?
but funerals are for the living aren't they? i could never sleep again if my loved one were mutilated. that's just me though.

We know what the Medical Examiner's office does.
true, but that's viscera, as in any autopsy. this was different in my mind. i'm just weird like MF said. ::bigg::
Holy Shit !..Are coffins only made "one size fits all" ?...OMG..or what if girly coffins only fit the average size chick..I'm tall, damnit...what if someone is super sized fat ?...Huh..Huh...WTF..I never thought about any of this before...I REALLY shouldn't have had that last coffee.
What's really weird is how they are going to have slice width (I'm thinking at least a third) off of Ramsey to get her to fit.
 Ramsey !...Are you FAT ?

::gigg::

I am not fat dammit!! We all know that you won't have any trouble fitting in the children's size. I bet you have to buy small condoms too.

Kind of what I said but with added wit and charm.

I realize that people aren't thinking clearly in a situation like a death and funeral but didn't anyone notice the coffin was about a foot too short?

Sheesh.
i am sure the families of 7-foot-tall basketball players would be appalled at the prospect of their loved ones' legs being amputated for the convenience of a funeral home.

the families of 7 foot tall basketball players are smart enough to BUY A LONGER CASKET that is the right size.

they should have just chopped off his head so the body would fit and propped the severed head on top of the closed casket like a Halloween jack o lantern

I'll side with JB on this one. I would be more thanpissed if a mortician took it uponhim/herselfto hack one of my loved ones up because he/she was too stupid to know that the man was too tall to fit into the casket. They are suppose to be professionals in this field and he shouldn't have told her it would work when it clearly didn't. People in need of a funeral parlor should NOT be expected to carry a fuckin tape measure with them when they make arrangements.

what are you talking about? have you ever had to buy a coffin? I have. They come in different sizes for children, adults, etc. And they make custom ones for large people (fat or tall).

It IS THE responsibility of the dead person's family to get it right.
Now I AGREE that the funeral home SHOULD HAVE called the family to discuss options BEFORE cutting the guys legs off, lol
