I just want you all to know that not only do we have the word police to be aware of, we now have the menu police.

The principal of an all-girls Christian private school in Northern California has apologized over a lunch menu supposedly intended to celebrate Black History Month that included cornbread, fried chicken and watermelon.

"I'd like to apologize for the announcement and any hurt this caused students, parents or community members," Nancy Libby, principal at Carondelet High School for Girls in Concord, said in a letter to parents.

STORY
Why don't we have White History Month?
Some black people ate, and still eat, fried chicken, cornbread, and watermelon. Some of us white people do, too. So what?

I think the apology should read more like, "I'm sorry that I lacked the basic foresight to realize this menu item would cause a stir, given recent history with very liberal accusations of racism and stereotyping running rampant".

I think the school shoulda seen the objections coming from miles away.

Because thats racist. Seems if your black its ok to exclude white folks (NAACP, UNCF, etc...) But its not ok to not want to associate with blacks, gays or whatever. At least thats my understanding of the laws.

That said, I like fried chicken, water melon and corn bread and I happen to know a lot of black folks that do too. However, I also know black folks that do not no how no way gonna eat that stuff because fried chicken is racist, at least thats what they say.
I was unaware that inanimate objects or animals could be racist, but apparently thats not the case.

And Yes the principal was an idiot for not realizing that those menu items that day would be a problem, Off with her head
I don't think items on a menu can be considered as perpetuating racial stereotyping. That's silly, to me,

Yet, I don't think it takes an in-depth analysis of current times to realize that there are plenty who think otherwise and will voice that opinion loud and clear.

As naive as I think it was that the principal would announce such a menu item without having an idea that it would ignite some cries of racism or stereotyping, I don't think her head should be lopped off or anything.

Effin' embarrassing enough to have to apologize for possibly "hurting" people with a menu listing. Smiley_emoticons_skeptisch

There are some damned sensitive, easily hurt people running around - no doubt about that.

It's okay to discuss black history but don't touch on some food items that are typically associated with blacks. Jesus. I wouldn't flip the fuck out if hotdogs & apple pie were associated with my white culture, matter of fact I wouldn't waste a moment giving it any thought if it were. I'm sorry the school felt pressured to apologize, it's not worthy of an apology.
Well, yeah, you're rational and not one of those overly sensitive people looking for something to bitch about, Duchess.

The whole thing is silly, to me, and that silly reaction is easily predictable. It's everywhere.

Personally, I'd want an apology for anyone assuming that I was so weak as to be hurt (or even concerned) over a menu item and require an apology. Smiley_emoticons_smile

Being associated with hotdogs and apple pie wouldn't bother me a bit either. The story didn't have any details regarding the objectors. I'm not assuming the majority of them are black, though they may be. Whole lotta (extremely righteous) people of all races applying the word "racist" very liberally these days, IMO.

Racism exists. It sucks. I think the overuse of the characterization minimizes the real problems and creates new ones.

I agree with him.

Awesome clip, Sally. I agree too!

Who keeps racism alive? Anyone know?

I bitch about people bitching. hah
Is soul food considered racist now? Seriously?

Its like me being offended at haggis or soda bread in a Scottish or Ulster themed menu.

Makes no sense at all “yes culturally we are known for eating certain foods but you can't say we are cracker!”

Fuck you nigga!

Apparently it is.

In certain American states every month is white history month.

Its like when white people say “how come black people have the MOBO awards we don't have anything like that!”

Yes you do, its called the Country Music awards otherwise known as the MOCOs! (Music of Cracker Origin).
Charlie Pride would be mortified.
So would Dr. King. He has probably been spinning in his grave at the turn of his people in the last 20 yrs
hah

I'm sorry, Six. But you speaking on behalf of Dr. King, even speculatively, strikes me as pretty surreal, and funny.

I imagine Dr. King to be similar to Bill Cosby.
It was stupid of the school to put both fried chicken and watermelon on the menu during black history month. I know it's just food, but putting them both on the menu looks like you're poking fun of black people. The menu would have been just fine with the fried chicken and corn bread and if they wanted to be really authentic they should have cooked up a mess of chitlins. Watermelon has nothing to with soul food and really the only thing is has to do with black history is that black people were portrayed as animals eating it.

I'm not saying that black people get offended every time they see fried chicken and watermelon, but if you're throwing a party in honor of them and that's all you serve up with some dried ass cornbread on the side they would probably be thinking WTF is wrong with these white people. And rightfully so.

May be, but you only see what I comment on in here, which is mostly about the garbage out there these days. I actually respected Dr King, he was a good man and had a really good message and example for his people. Some jackass racist cracker asshole killed him and his people from all appearances have run completely off the rails.
A person can't help where they are born in this world, but after that its all you.
