i have a big yard. lots of land and trees. but no fence. i want a GS puppy. what should i do?
You can buy a wire that is buried under the ground and the dog wears a collar, when it goes near the wire it activates the collar, works very well.

No, those do not work "very well". Many a dog under this system has escaped. Some dogs are not even slightly fazed at the warning buzz or the shock for crossing the line. I wouldn't ever use one of those systems to protect my dog.

You'd be better off with a rolling clothesline type of restraint.
i hate tying a dog up. maybe i shouldn't get him.
I hope Ant has a solution for you, jb...I'd hate to see you detered from getting one of those darling puppies...

Those electric invisible fences are crap. The dog has to wear a collar that is big and obnoxious all the time and shocking an animal to train it is downright cruel.

Sin's idea of the runner type line is a good one. I've used it to thether horses on competition and it gives them plenty of running room without getting tangled up.

You can put 'stoppers' on each end to keep the animal away from trees so they don't wrap themselves around it thus tangling themselves up making the run useless.

If you're home all day, then you have even less to worry about. Walk the dog. Train the dog. GSD's train easily and if you have a well bred one and one that enjoys learning and pleasing you, it will be easy to do.

I wouldn't suggest a fenced in yard if your sole purpose is to leave the dog unattended in the yard all day. Dogs that are left alone are bored and will dig holes or find ways to escape to break the boredom.

Get the dog. Be it's friend, walk it often. Get it trained properly. If you have 'cop connections' up where you are maybe you can get one of the K9 unit cops to train it for you.

That pit I told the story about where my boyfriend's niece bit his ear and he didn't flinch or hurt her(on 24 awhile back), well he was K9 trained. He knew a cop in the K9 unit in Detroit and had the dog trained and then purposely fail the final exam so they don't take the dog on as an officer and he got the dog back.

If not, maybe I can call the school where I had my current pits trained and ask the owner if he knows of dog schools up there. My trainer is one of the best Schutzund (< spelling?) trainers in the country and he trains for K9 as well.

Having a fenced in yard is not a requirement for good dog keeping and ownership.

Keep in mind this is a working breed and he's going to need 'something to do' all the time. That's your job with any working breed.

If you're looking for a dog for companion only then I would suggest a smaller breed that does not need as much exercise. If you want companionship and protection, the GSD is better suited.

Make sure you get him from a good breeder and have his hips checked and certified. If you can get a Belgian shepherd it's a better dog over the GSD for the hip dysplasia issues.

I got all I know from blowing horses. Didn't you know that?
You admit this unprompted on many threads. Are you wanting us to do something for your "coming out"? What kind of fuss are you after pervert?

You know you people should really reconsider the top dummy on the site. Fry Guy out-dingbats ramseycat 10 - 1 on every post he makes.

Dumbass, do you even bother to read the posts or do you just go out looking for my name and come back with some ignorant comment thinking you're clever?
how about a fence. I know you said you do not have fence, but how about considering one. my friend had the electronic one mentioned above installed and it cost thousands of dollars. How about simple fencing in a big area and letting the dog run free in it. Seems like the easiest solution.

How much do you care?

The Antagonist

I don't. You just need to understand how stupid you are. You're like any other dumb animal that needs to be trained. Repeat until one day you understand.

You are going to take a very long time to 'understand'. I've resolved myself to the fact (as I'm sure others here have as well) that you most likely will never.
You think highly of yourself. I can't see how you are really in a position to teach anyone anything.

AS for trying to compare me to an animal after announcing sexually perverse thoughts about animals every other post...let's say that kind of resolution from you, I can do without.

If you want to make a bigger ass out of yourself though, keep announcing you are screwing animals and keep playing Mrs Tough Guy.

YOu are good value and make me laugh at your Fail.

The dog is clearly the brains in this partnership.
