Rep. Christopher Lee , a New York Republican, has resigned after reports surfaced that the married congressman was trying to meet women on Craigslist, according to a GOP source with direct knowledge of the matter.
Lee acknowledged making "profound mistakes" and said his decision to step down was voluntary.
"It has been a tremendous honor to serve the people of Western New York. I regret the harm that my actions have caused my family, my staff and my constituents. I deeply and sincerely apologize to them all. I have made profound mistakes and I promise to work as hard as I can to seek their forgiveness," he said in a statement.
"The challenges we face in Western New York and across the country are too serious for me to allow this distraction to continue, and so I am announcing that I have resigned my seat in Congress effective immediately."
The allegations were first reported Wednesday afternoon on Gawker.
According to the report, he used a Gmail account, which was later deleted, to contact the woman, claiming to be a divorced lobbyist. Lee is married with one son. The article said Lee at first sent a normal picture of himself and then sent a "PG-13 muscle picture" -- the picture published by Gawker showed a shirtless man posing in a mirror.
"Thanks...so do you always send shirtless pics to women from cl?" the response e-mail said, according to the correspondence published online.
"Sorry. Its all I had," the sender replied.
Lee told Fox News he had not read the Gawker story and would not confirm whether he was the man in the photograph. Lee's office also said there would be "no comment from our office at this time."

A Lee spokesperson earlier told Gawker that the congressman believed he'd been a victim of hackers, noting that Lee sent a message to his staff about a security breach on Jan. 21 -- though the published e-mails were dated a week earlier.
Idaho State Senator John McGee spent Father's Day in jail after being charged with drunken driving and suspicion of felony grand theft.
Mr McGee, a past 'Republican Legislator of the Year,' is accused of taking an SUV with a 20ft cargo trailer attached from the Boise area home of a 'complete stranger' after an evening of drinking at a golf course clubhouse.
According to the Ada County Sheriff's Office, 38-year-old McGee, who is the Senate GOP Caucus Chairman and the youngest member of Idaho's senate, began drinking at a Boise golf course at about 10pm Saturday.
The lawmaker, who lives in Caldwell, left the clubhouse just before 3am and began walking before seeing the Ford Excursion with the 20ft trailer hooked up.
The vehicle was unlocked with the keys inside. McGee got inside and drove away, authorities say.
Shortly after Mr McGee tried turning the vehicle and trailer around in a driveway.
But the move was unsuccessful and the Excursion and trailer jack-knifed and became stuck, Gawker.com reports.
According to Sgt. Carlos De Leon with Sheriff's Office, Mr McGee then allegedly left the vehicle and walked back and forth indecisively up and down the street.
If he was trying to turn it around in the owner's driveway it's only a misdemeanor. He would have never removed the truck from the owners property. I remember a guy charged with Grand theft of a locomotive and his lawyer got it reduced to misdemeanor mischief because even though he drove it many miles away from where it was parked he never took it off railroad property. This guy should have just stayed inside the jack-knife cab and tweeted nude pics of himself to strangers.
His next headline will be him going into rehab.
