I have heard a lot about the Kahn academy...all positive. I keep telling myself I want to check it out, but have yet to get my lazy ass out of Mock, and off Facebook long enough to do so,
Adults forget things because we don't use the knowledge and we have other stuff on our minds. I only refresh the knowledge I need for my job, but I let a lot of other once-important stuff stagnate in my head.

I found the site looking up Heron's Formula, but I plan to watch his vids on the Credit Crisis.

I changed the avatar. I couldn't even live with it, evil bitch that I am.
I could never get higher math in school. By higher math..I mean Algebra and above. I barely passed Algebra in High School. Took math101 in college to fufill my math requirement..it was affectionatly known as Math for Morons.
But I took statistics as a required course...and actually did OK in it..but I took it as a stand alone class during summer session so I could devote all my time to it.
Do you believe the folks who say that the boys are better at Math & Science and we girls did better in English and History? I know it was true for me...but does that make it the norm??

No, I don't believe that at all.

We raised entire generations of people who told little girls not to worry about the math and science, it was boy's work. They assumed girls would marry boys who would handle all the math stuff in the household. Thankfully, that is changing now.

There is also a large push underway to start teaching mathematics using Eastern methods, like the Model Method. Parents will need to relearn math to help their little ones in school.

There's no doubt about the fact that I've forgotten a helluva lot of shit, especially now that my kid is getting older, and more advanced in school. What get's me is that a lot of it is the same worthless crap that I was taught in school, but solving requires different methodology than what I was taught. Bottom line, it's pretty much worthless, and not really useful in life (I can't tell her that, though).
Do you have any idea the number of people who can't use a ruler? It would boggle your mind.
Learning that type of shit is defo useful in life, however the 1 316 ( 7 110 ÷ 2 59 ) + 920 shit that my kid does every night for math homework really irritates the shit out of me.

You don't see how you would use that to measure something?

Actually, the only reason we still teach/use fractions is in regards to our system of measurement. If we would have gone metric in the 70s (I understand why we didn't), we would not have to teach/learn fractions today.

Is your daughter in 5th or 6th grade?

Engineers use fractions on a daily basis, I will guarantee you that there is very little that measures whole numbers in this world.



Engineers tend use more decimals than fractions...at least the ones that I deal with every-fucking-day. I'm not denying that fractions have their place..but not so much in todays worlds where shit is designed to +/- .0001" tolerance.

decimals are fractions.

34 equals .75
12 equals .50
14 equals .25
and it just continues down scale into the 100ths,1000ths and 10,000ths

all in guess what scale " that would be inches Mr Wizard"

I use math daily doing prints, calculating load limits of steel, stainless,cold/hot rolled,galvanized etc. dbl. checking lbs with metal shipments coming in and going out as waste. Checking the difference between G60 and G90 galv with chemical anaysis, heat loads on various structures, bla bla bla.
The only reason I took math is because they had the cutest girls in the classes. I went 12 yrs in school and only applied mathematical concepts as I needed them for work..............but I remember them girls. Smiley_emoticons_fies You just gotta love Pi for circumfrence though.
You arent getting it, I obviously know how conversions work...but read most any manufacturing blueprint.. and unless you're talking about a house or something, they'll all read +/- decimal numerals.

Excellent, the pussy made the class worthwhile then! Can you sir, tell me how often you've had to use/solve the problem I've stated above, or something similar? I'm not saying that math is not worthwhile, in fact, far from it..but what I am saying is that some of the math being drilled into our kids heads these days is pretty much worthless.
