I will go on record saying NCLB screwed up education in this country. I'm not against all children succeeding, that's a good thing, I am against putting the little fuckers that can't behave and don't care in the same classroom as other kids. I'm also against the kids who have special needs being forced to take tests that are way beyond their range of abilities. That's not so good.

Bush did that shit. It was actually tacked on to a law started by Lyndon Johnson (the ESEA Act 1965, look it up) as part of his War on Poverty and was then renamed No Child Left Behind. So yes, you can really blame the Dems for this one. haha

Anyway, the Republicans are trying to get rid of this bullshit federal involvement in education, but Obama is blocking them and trying to INCREASE the Department of Education which interferes with states' right to decide what is best for their particular situation. If you hate NCLB, keep this in mind when you cast your vote.

Yes. You can help a kid that does his/her work and gets most of it wrong. You CANNOT help a kid that doesn't do their work.

Same with adults. You can help someone who is just having a turn of bad luck. You CANNOT help someone who makes their own "bad luck."

People are afraid to vote against this stuff because, "It's for the children." It is not. It is for the federal government. The states should have the power back to run their own schools. Eff the feds.

On a related note (I think), a little girl recently died at school because there was no school nurse on staff. The girl's asthma and other breathing problems had been documented by a school nurse in the past, and her emergency medication injection was on hand at the school. Unfortunately, the "health clerk" who was on duty, a promoted cafeteria worker and playground supervisor, was not aware of the health plan and emergency medication. No CPR was attempted. Paramedics were called, but the girl was in cardiac arrest by the time they arrived six minutes later and they could not save her.

Apparently only 45% of elementary schools still have registered nurses present on a full time basis and 25% have no nurse at all. One of the reasons cited is the law requiring schools to raise academic scores, which forces them to cut back on services not required by law. Most districts can choose whether to have nursing staff or not, but apparently this decision is greatly affected by how much budget is available after the schools have met the lawfully required academic/testing requirements.
