I also seem to have it mixed up with something else I watched when I was a kid, where they actually stuck the bull and it's back was bloody. It was a cartoon though... hmm that's confusing.

Yeah... cock fighting and dog 'pit' fighting is still practiced pretty widely in the US, especially in the 'southern' states (note: WV is not technically a 'southern' state, but it may as well be in many ways).
