It's a Mormon thing... any weird sayings in your neck of the woods?

SyberBitch

hmm... when my mom gets mad, she says 'Peanut Butter!'.

stupid bitch.

I'll have to see if I can think of anything else that people say around here. It's WV, there must be tons of 'local flavor' to share. oooh yummy.

The old Pa Dutchies around here say "How fuckin' dumb are ya?" when you do something truly stupid.

Local phrases from here:

Ain't not?......A term meaning the same as "right?"

No shit Dick Tracy!

He's/she's/they're/that's about smart.

*These three can be strung together......Well no shit Dick Tracy! He's about smart. Ain't not?*

Out through......general reference to something east of here.

Down through.....see above but south.

Over through.....again but west.

Up the line......once more but north.

Cute!

I've heard that 'straight stretch' (meaning a fairly long straight section of road) is somewhat colloquial, because most places aren't as twisty as WV.

Some of the dumbest things people say in this state, are the way they pronounce the names of places.

Like today, I had to go do a job in a town called 'Cowen'.

I was corrected by 'the locals'. Apparently, it's pronounced 'COW-in'. (like... a cow... right). Lots of examples of that type of stuff.

Here - here's a whole page dedicated to the strange way people talk in the area where I live (note - I do NOT speak this way - I'm often asked "Y'aint from around hyere, are-yuh?")

The ones I posted are particular to my little valley.

Now there's different phrases etc. specific to certain TOWNS in this region. For instance: Da fuck, is not swearing in Shenandoah,Pa (locally pronounced Chendo) but rather it's punctuation! Also they find it necessary to include the telephone exchange when stating they are from Shenandoah.

Example: Yeah, I'm from Chendo. 462 da fuck. Where you from da fuck?

The coal region of Pennsylvania is a veritable ethnic stew. The mix includes Irish, Russian, Lithuanian, Polish, Ukrainian, Italian and German backgrounds. Most "coalspeak" is a mix of the slangs from all but the Germans. They became the Dutchies.

Here's the "coalspeak" dictionary:

*Note: I'm a Dutchie (Pa Dutch, which is a Germanic background) so I don't speak like this. I do use a phrase or two that are in here though.*
Those PA Dutch sure can cook...One of my favorite places to go up there is Lancaster...Every now & then I'll take a day trip.

You got that right! It's a wonder I'm not as big as a house with all the good food and the way I eat.

My grandmother was a traditional Dutchie in that if you came over and didn't eat (even if nothing was made or in progress as soon as a guest arrived the cooking began) she would hound you till you did.

Chicken or ham pot pie (Bot Boi for the Amish) and Snitz und Knepp are my weaknesses Smiley_emoticons_razz

Around here in addition to the good dutch fare we have all the good Slovak food too.

A local saying is: "Stuff yer gut. I dint cook it fer nuttin'. Ya fuck ya!"

People say "In this economy" all the time, it drives me nuts. Everything, "Well we gotta slow down the traffic lights in this economy" and "In this economy the paper will land on the lawn" not on the doorstep. Today I got my water bill and in cute little words they wrote: In this Economy.....I amNOT opening it!!!::batguy::
I had no idea so many people paid for water...It kinda amuses me, it's like paying for air.
I have to pay for water, water processing, and sewar. I also have to pay for garbage. I have a lot of friends in different states where they don't pay for this stuff. I think it's included in their proprerty taxes.

In NY, they call a purse a pocketbook. I hate that word. It's stupid.

The Antagonist

I'll keep the 'pocketbook' - you Michiganders still don't know the difference between a Coke and orange soda.

When I was out there EVERY flavor, brand etc of soda was called a COKE. Order an orange soda and the dopey waitress repeats that you want an "orange Coke".

NY'ers know the difference between a stoop, porch and deck.

Stoop - made of some kind of mansonry material.
Porch - usually made of wood and has a small platform of some sort. Is always in the front of the house.
Deck - is made of wood and is of a large platform where you can hand out and relax, grill, eat etc. Is always in the back of the house.

"Go fuck yourself in Macy's window." is a NY phrase.

Fuckin' ay - Brooklyn, NY.

Yo - Brooklyn, NY.

"Going Upstate" - means going to the northern part of NY State - basically anywhere outside of the city. Long Island is technically 'upstate' but we just say "Long Island" as if it's a separate entity.

::laugh:: I love the phrase, I really do.

When people ask where I'm from &I say New York, they always automatically think the city...No, not the city, upstate...Oh, you're from Buffalo...Jesus Christ...Ima a kid of the North Country...Oh hell, now I'm thinking about snow.

Umm, *whaps Ant* we "Michiganders" aren't the ones who call all soda a coke (though we're just now calling it soda instead of pop, both are in common usage). Its down south that they call everything a coke, even a seven up.

I've heard it myself. Sorry, but maybe the do it down south too - not where I've been down south but I have heard with my own ears in MI ordering a soda it being called a coke when it wasn't.

I know they say "Pop" too as I've heard that one but gratefully, Matt has been broken of that habit a long time ago.

The only place in Michigan I've ever heard all soda called a Coke is i Detroit. And Detroit blows too. Oh and a few places in Saginaw, but those people were all "imports" from other states. When I say I'm going to get a coke, I mean I'm going to get a Coca-Cola Smiley_emoticons_wink Which I have one sitting right next to me right now Smiley_emoticons_biggrin

Just so you know, Detroit is inMICHIGAN. So is Dearborn Heights, where I've heard this as well as Lincoln Park, Taylor and other areas in that region.

So, as we say in NY, eat shit and die.

Metro Detroit Area is a blight on Michigan, so let me pretend it isn't part of it Smiley_emoticons_wink
