LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – Dhegani Mahato, accused of being a witch, has been burned alive. Dhegani Mahato was a witch, claimed her own family in central Nepal. So on Friday, her own family attacked her, dragged her through the streets of town, and burned her alive. Dhegani Mahato was 40 years old and a mother of two.

The tragedy erupted this week in Bagauda, outside the Nepal capital of Kathmandu, Baral. But now local police are having to explain to international news how a much of an entire city erupted into violence after accusing a local mother of witchcraft.

Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai is denouncing the conduct today. But Bhattarai tells news that there is a growing problem of long shamans randomly accusing citizens of being witches.

Police Officer Hira Mani Baral tells news that nearly a dozen persons have been arrested for the mother’s tragic death. Baral claims it began when two shamans accused Dhegani Mahato of putting a spell on her relatives to make them sick.

Mahato was beaten, dragged through the streets, and then set on fire in front a crowd of local citizens. Some neighbors tried to save her but were too late. The entire tragedy unfolded in front of Dhegani.

Mahato's family Dhegani beaten and burned in the presence of a young daughter in the district of Chitwan

so is that the woman who was burned? the pic was above that description.
thanks!

This is just a guess but given the way it translated I think it may have been that woman's daughter who was burned.
What can we do to get this started in Toledo?
The older woman is a family member of the woman who was burned. I think the quote is indicating that the 40 year old victim's young daughter was present when her mom was torched.

Weird to read about a (supposed) witch being burned with a crowd of onlookers, no less, in this day and age. Wonder if this kind of shit still happens more than we know.

Oh shit. And family members were part of the group that did that to her, with her daughter present? Jesus.
Kathmandu Daily
CHITWAN, Feb 17: A widow was mercilessly beaten and burnt to death by her relatives in Baghaudha village-2 of Chitwan district Friday for “practicing witchcraft”. According to villagers, Dhegani Mahato, 40, was mercilessly beaten by her relatives, including Bikram Mahato, who hit her with stones before setting her on fire. Locals said, Dhegani’s in-laws attacked her when she was feeding her cattle. Although there are several other houses in the vicinity, nobody noticed Dhegani being thrashed. Villagers say they came to know about the incident only after Bikram set Dhegani on fire. “When I reached there, she was already dead,” said Jhari Mahato, Dhegani’s father-in-law. Villagers say Bikram’s family members were dancing around Dhegani’s blazing body with sickles in their hands. The assailants ran away after villagers gathered. Police have arrested eight persons, including Bikram and Jogishwora Mahato, who claims to be a shaman, on the charge of killing Dhegani. According to the police, Bikram’s family members said they killed Dhegani as per “the god’s instruction”. Police have arrested Bikram, his wife Laxmi, daughter Manju Mahato, son-in-law Bikram Mahato, a resident of Baghauda-8, Sanju Mahato, Krishna Mahato and Saraswati Mahato and Jogishwor Mahato. Bikram’s daughter Manju had visited her maternal home with her husband Bikram Thursday. Bikram fell sick Thursday night. Manju tried to dispel “the influence of witchcraft” on her husband by hitting him with a broom. They attacked Dhegani after Jogishwor pointed her out as a witch “who cast her spell on Bikram”. According to Bishwomati Mahato, a local woman, Jogishwor was arrested for accusing another woman of practicing witchcraft some 15 days ago. Police later freed him after Jogishwor claimed to have not called any one witch. “We had to free him after he claimed innocence and other villagers also supported him,” said inspector Govinda Singh Chhetri, chief of Basantpur Area Police Office, Chitwan. Bikram’s grandson had died after drowning in the river some time ago. “Bikram might have been under a false impression that his grandson was drowned to death because of Dhegani,” said Prabhu Mahato, a local. “His false impression must have turned into a belief when his son-in-law fell sick Thursday night.” Dhegani’s husband had died of cancer seven years ago. She had been living with her 10-year-old son and eight-year-old daughter since then.

Jesus Christ. How fucking horrible.

Keep your ignorant culture in your own backwards ass country if you come here. Fucking barbarians. (Yeah, not a sociologist. Fucking animals.)

Are they Buddhists, LC? Because I can't see that being OK with anyone who is a practicing Buddhist. China is still occupying Nepal, so I am blaming the fucking cruel Chinese.
Mebbe they have some ergot in their bread.

LOL, could be, I think they got a lot of rain this season
CNN is running this story now.

She was beaten with sticks and rocks before being doused with kerosene and set afire, an attack witnessed by her 9-year-old daughter, according to the local police report.

http://www.cnn.com/2012/02/18/world/asia...?hpt=wo_c2

The article states among her attackers were 5 women, an 8 year old boy and 2 shaman. She was ambushed after cleaning out a cowshed. The government will give her 2 children the equivalent of $14,000 USD compensation.

Not looking like a religious or cultural-motivated thing. More like one fucking nutjob family who went off the deep end.

Who would have though cleaning out a cowshed could have such serious ramifications.
On a serious note though that is very sad, cant imagine how the kids feel, with thinking family beat and burned their mom to death.
children of the "witch".

This is a perfect example of why I hope & pray there is nothing to that reincarnation bullshit.

I don't want to come back in Calcutta or a deranged third world country.

Dead is dead.

There better be horses in heaven or I'm not going.

I want to come back as a spoiled house-cat. I get pissed and jealous in the morning when I see my lazy cats sprawled across my bed. The fat 25# hairy bastid is the worst, I swear he's telling me to get my ass to work because "cat chow isn't free, bitch".

I don't see a problem with sleeping 18-20 hrs a day.

Can someone please throw one or two napalm toys to the witches of our parliament ? , if not possible , can someone just invite to my country that family and tell them exactly the location of the witches in our parliament?

Thanks.

ps

I hope you won't take it very seriously but in case you do...well ..fuck it !
I really, really hope the rest of the family don't start casting an eye to her children.
