The Los Angeles Police Department will soon start ignoring California state law, which requires police to impound the vehicles of unlicensed drivers for 30 days.

The majority of unlicensed motorists in Los Angeles are immigrants who are in the country illegally and have low-income jobs. The LAPD says the state's impound law is unfair because it limits their ability to get to their jobs and imposes a steep fine to get their car back.

As long as drivers can produce some form of I.D., proof of insurance and vehicle registration, they won't have those docs either! they'll be allowed to keep their car. Police Chief Charlie Beck insists that it's simply leveling the playing field.

"It's about fairness. It's about equal application of the law," Beck told a Los Angeles TV station earlier this month.

Opponents of Beck's decision are furious and refer to studies showing unlicensed drivers are among the most dangerous on the road. Indeed, a 2011 AAA study titled "Unlicensed to Kill" finds they are five times more likely to be involved in fatal crashes and more likely to flee the scene of a crime.

Los Angeles Times
February 23, 2012
Wading into a divisive, politically charged debate, Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck said Wednesday that California should issue driver's licenses to illegal immigrants.

The chief becomes one of the most prominent local figures to support the idea that state lawmakers have battled over repeatedly in the last 15 years. And Beck's stance is certain to further inflame critics who are already angry at the chief for his efforts to liberalize rules on how his officers impound the cars of unlicensed drivers.

"My personal belief is that they should be able to" have licenses, Beck said in response to a question during a meeting with Times' reporters and editorial writers. "The reality is that all the things that we've done — 'we' being the state of California — over the last 14, 16 years have not reduced the problem one iota, haven't reduced undocumented aliens driving without licenses. So we have to look at what we're doing. When something doesn't work over and over and over again, my view is that you should reexamine it to see if there is another way that makes more sense."

Beck said he does not believe licenses for illegal immigrants should be identical to standard licenses. Saying "it could be a provisional license, it could be a non-resident license," he acknowledged that state officials would have to find ways to address widely held concerns that giving licenses to people who are in the country illegally could make it easier for terrorists to go undetected.

Such concerns, however, were outweighed for Beck by what he said would be improved safety on California's roads and the ability of police to identify the people they encounter. "Why wouldn't you want to put people through a rigorous testing process? Why wouldn't you want to better identify people who are going to be here?" he said.

That's like saying laws against cutting people with knives haven't really worked so let's ... and so on ...
Ridiculous. In California, it's all about pandering for the Hispanic vote.
If I could get 30 million people to jump the border the other way, I think I could make my point.

we could take over Mexico, control their elections, vote and be happy the rest of our lives I mean hell if mexico wants to trade places with us, I'm pretty much all for that.

otherwise they shouldn't be allowed to do shit here until they do the first thing right..

i want to know if this no-license amnesty will apply to real citizens.
Looks like it. But doesn't it just go to impounding the vehicle? It's not about not having a driver's license. You can still be cited for that. Maybe even arrested. Only people that should be complaining are the tow-truck drivers and the impound lots. I hate impound lots.
I say screw em.
What about the mandatory car insurance for all drivers? Are they going to get a pass on that too? How unfair is it to expect them to respect our laws?

In order to own and operate a vehicle in the state of California, drivers must follow minimum financial responsibility laws by carrying the statutory minimum limits of liability insurance as follows: $15,000 for death or injury of any one person, any one accident; $30,000 for all persons in any one accident; and $5,000 for any one accident.

Don't blame it on LAPD. They did not create the situation. They are just looking at it realistically. Blame "We the People".

I don't blame them, they are compelled to follow the law, I blame the people who make some of these stupid laws. I admit to being pretty fucking dense when it comes to this stuff because for me I cannot get passed ILLEGAL.

Actually the LAPD wants to break the law Smiley_emoticons_slash

PALMVIEW, Texas – A 15-year-old South Texas boy charged with nine counts of murder after he crashed a minivan packed with illegal immigrants, killing nine of them, cried and expressed remorse before a judge Monday, police said.

The boy, who is not being identified because he is a juvenile, appeared at a probable cause hearing at a juvenile detention facility. He was also charged with 17 counts of smuggling of a person causing serious bodily injury or death, and one count of evading.

Border Patrol agents pulled over the van last Tuesday night about 10 miles west of McAllen. As it stopped, one person jumped from the vehicle and ran. When agents pursued him the van sped off. It crashed just a few blocks away scattering a parking lot with bodies, backpacks and water bottles. The driver escaped, but was arrested two days later at his home.

Hidalgo County District Attorney Rene Guerra said he planned to petition a judge to certify the boy so he can be tried as an adult.

"I'm going to be as aggressive as the law allows," Guerra said.

Why? you refuse to follow the law when you smoke Smiley-rolling-joint You also said you dig your heels in when it comes to conforming to society standards. You expect other people to follow the law and integrate when you don't?

I think you're a dummie because you can't see the difference between me smoking a little weed in the privacy of my own home & the presence of illegal aliens sucking up our resources that should be there for Americans.

I was in a mtg recently and I asked a question about "illegal immigrants" and the facilitator chick said "oh, you mean undocumented persons?"
I do have to admit that if I had the misfortune to be born in Mexico with all the drug cartels and poverty, lack of opportunity, etc and all I had to do was cross this desert to the greatest country in the world. My children and i would be hauling ass.
