The weather here is perfect for sleeping with the windows open. However, I refuse to let my children sleep with theirs open. When I lived in florida, a little girl was stolen out of her bed through the open window about 3 blocks from my house. She was raped, murdered and found in a ditch. They never caught the guy. Since then, I wont allow it. My girlfriend was here this evening and thought I was being overprotective (she has no children). I have central air so if it gets too warm, I put that on. I dont think its overprotective to lock their windows at night. What are your thoughts on this, Mockers? Do you leave your childrens windows open?
I close and lock all the first floor windows, but will leave the second floor windows open sometimes on nice evenings.

More often than not though the A/C gets turned on.

I don't think you're being overprotective... you're responsible for keeping the kids safe - not your friend.

I agree with you. Especially if your on the first floor. Too many crazies out there anymore.
All our windows are locked with poles in them. I never leave my windows open. Never.
If I had kids, I would not leave their windows open. What a pathetic commentary on what our country has become.
I only leave the upstairs windows open. I love to listen to the night sounds. It's relaxing. But all our bedrooms are upstairs so unless somone wants to get a big ass ladder, they are not getting in.
When I was growing up we lived on a huge property, but come to think about it we didn't have windows that opened. THE MONSTER WAS INSIDE THE HOUSE! WOULDN'T HAVE HELPED!

If I did have kids today, I would not leave the windows open. But I think I would have a big dog too.

I suppose I would have a different mindset if I had children but I don't give any thought to open windows & I rarely even remember to lock the door.
I would love to sleep with the windows open. I have six children and the last thing I do before I go to sleep is go around and close and lock all the windows.
i can only recall ONE modern case where a child was taken out of a window. it's so rare it's practically unheard-of. that was poor Jessica Lunsford.
the rest are 99.9% lies in my professional opinion. Duckett, Irwin, Celis, Reynolds et al.
I live all the upstairs bedroom windows open during the summer. They are all UPVC double glazing and don't open far enough to let even a skinny person through.
Get window bars.
Doors and windows open.
Always sleep with a window open.

Thats to let all the smoke out
I keep all the kids' windows locked up, even though all of our bedrooms are on the second floor. I do leave the window in our room open though. The bed is right by the window though, so no one could sneak in without me (or my husband) noticing.

quite...
Lady cop=voice of reason. There are millions of kids NOT stolen out of windows every year.
Billions in fact.
I'm lucky if I get 10 days out of the year where it's nice enough to open the windows, the rest of the time it's too hot. If I do open them during the day I always make sure they're locked when we go to bed.

When I was growing up my parents didn't believe in running the AC so our windows and doors were always open and no one thought anything of it. The couple of times they did turn on the air I thought I died and went to heaven.
