i hate much of the history of the treatment of American Indians and the awful conditions of reservations now. how many have declined from proud people into poverty and alcoholism.
but i sure do like the fierce and noble past history.

where i now live is a home to the Wampanoag, who helped the Pilgrims. i can visualize the Indians traveling 'my' lake.

According to family legend there is some Apache on pop's side, and either Pawnee or Sioux on mom's. However, since most of my ancestors were degenerates who would jump anything that stood still long enough, I can't credibly claim anything but Merkin Mutt. And I have no problem with that. Purebreds are generally a sickly lot.

I am full of American Indian, but only every other weekend. Probably doesn't count.

Scotch, Irish, Mescalero Apache and fence jumper. Supposed to be some Cherokee in there too. Supposedly back in the day it was a bad thing to have that in your family tree, kind of like a spook in the woodpile so the GGparents never registered. But I feel it, I was definately born 200 years to late.

My maternal Grandfather was part of the Black Sioux tribe. I have his nose....

A war shirt worn by Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce tribe that can be seen in a painting hanging in the Smithsonian Institution has sold for $877,500 at auction in Reno.

The shirt is considered to be one of the most important Native American artefacts to ever come to auction.

Possessing alcohol or being under its influence is illegal on the Pine Ridge Reservation. But in Whiteclay, Nebraska (population around a dozen), on the reservation boundary, four liquor stores sell some four million cans of potent malt liquor annually. Alcoholism afflicts eight out of ten Oglala families. The tribe has filed suit against beer distributors for knowingly making alcohol so readily available.

A woman prays beside a sacred Sun Dance tree after the ceremony has ended. During the Sun Dance a medicine man guides certain men in making a solemn offering. They are attached to the ropes by bone pegs piercing their chests or backs and must tear themselves free. The colorful ties on the tree contain tobacco and other offerings and represent prayers for the people and for all of creation.

Yes, I have - last year. Still Awesome and getting better. Let me see if I cant post the latest pictures. I would be going back this year, but I hae trouble riding in a car for 3 days (no, no airports near Pine Ridge)

That's pretty much why I haven't been yet. It's gotta be a commitment to specifically go there and no pussies or tenderfoots need apply. Probably appropriate considering the person it honors, but couldn't it at least be kinda on the way to something else? When you're trying to maximize a travel dollar you tend to aim for larger concentrations of attraction and stuff like the CH monument keep getting pushed back...
