CHATHAM — Officials have banned swimming at all the town's east-facing ocean beaches, saying there are too many great white sharks offshore to take any chances.
The ban covers the town's barrier beaches from the Orleans town line down to the end of South Beach. Beaches along the inner portion of the harbor, including Lighthouse Beach in front of the stairway, Andrew Harding's Beach, Ridgevale, Cockle Cove, Forest Street and Pleasant Street beaches all remain open for swimming.
Not only have more great whites been seen close to beaches, but researchers from the state Division of Marine Fisheries have had an increased number of hits from the acoustic tags they've placed on some of the predators, Daniel Tobin, parks and recreation director in Chatham, said Wednesday afternoon. The acoustic tags emit a signal picked up by listening buoys along the Chatham shore and into Wellfleet.
Tobin said there also have been more reports of great whites from boaters, commercial fishermen and the scientists and contractors doing the tagging.
The tagging researchers, led by state shark expert Greg Skomal, recently reported sharks close to shore near swimmers, according to a statement from the parks department. The statement also said some fishermen have reported great whites in their nets, and a research spotter plane saw a white shark leaving Chatham Harbor east of the Chatham Lighthouse through the 1987 inlet.
Tobin said the swimming ban also took into account that there would be fewer eyes on the water as the boating season ends and town staffing drops.

For me, I made the decision to actually attend my 40th high school reunion. Yes, that officially makes ME older than dirt. Going to be an all weekend event, starting with "lets all go to a bar" on Friday night and ending with "lets all go tour the old school" on Sunday Afternoon. I am going to do the bar thing, but will pass on visiting the school. Spent three years of my life there..that was enough.
Dinner on Saturday at a country club. Saturday lunch at a local greasy spoon that makes a great Beef on Kimmelweck sandwich that you cannot get outside of Western NY...at least not a bona fide real one.
Karaoke tonight. Birthday party tomorrow. 4 picnics on Saturday, a party and 2 picnics Sunday and 3 on Monday. Yay holidays :/
Visit from my brother and his wife, catch up on DVR stuff/movie marathons, internet.
For me, as I have to work, I'm hoping someone gives me an excuse to pepper spray.
Nothing planned yet. Got my boy tonight and might be watching a ball game tomorrow. High school football. Working monday, doubletime and a half for the win.
State Fair tomorrow. Golf Saturday or Sunday. Small town 'Red Rooster Days' on Monday.
Monday is a race day & several of the people I'd like to have here will be working so I'll be doing my partying over the weekend.

I use pepper spray on my kebabs. Its fast easy and fun.
On call on Saturday and Monday and getting things done in the office. Sunday should be slower and I'll be meeting up with some friends for a barbecue and ping pong in the open back section of my friend's pub. It's been warm in San Francisco this summer; supposed to be 75 degrees on Sunday - should be a perfect day if the wind doesn't kick in (fingers crossed).
Birthday party on Saturday, then nothing on the docket. Weather looks nice, so maybe I'll get some hammock time finally.
If I had more time I might hang out at LC's bridge and drop bread crumbs on the passing cars then let the seagulls do the rest.
