My ex gave me the computer from his house. I bought a new cord for the monitor, but it keeps saying "monitor going to sleep". I even tried switching monitors but it always says the same thing for both. When I unplug the cord, it says no signal, check cable. What could be wrong?
Video card not plugged in all the way to the mother board
Need more information. Like, what brand computer is it and how old is it?

(OK, who am I fooling... even with that information I wouldn't be able to help you. . . but I bet someone here could!)

Edited to add: Or it could be what SIXFOOTER sez
OBK, I just want you to know I like your posts. Everyone is original and funny shit.

Carry on....
Right click on your desktop. Click on properties from the drop down menu. Click on screen saver and from the new box choose 'monitor power' and open it to change your setting, then save the new settings and see if this helps. Also from the screen saver box you can chose to change the setting of the screen saver or to to employ one or not.
How can she do that if it is in permanent sleep ten seconds after you turn it on?
Yes, the desktop doesn't even come up. Crap, I'm afraid it the video card. Its an HP, around 3-4 years old. Is it fixable? I mean, if I took it somewhere, could they fix it for a reasonable amount of money? A lot of my childrens pictures and videos are on there.

Lucy, once you power it on try to continuously press F8 to take it back to its factory settings.
Oh! Ill try that, thanks!

Make sure you do it continuously, press, press, press. Good luck!
Oh shit, you know what? I had to buy a new keyboard bc the one he gave me was broken and I obviously can't install it. Shit shit shit.
Can't install it because of the monitor, or is that another problem?
Because of the monitor, it goes directly to sleep. I'm pretty sure its the video card. I'm going to call around and see who can fix it without draining my bank account. I don't know the first thing about trying to do it myself.
I would throw the whole kit and kaboodle out and buy a new one. But that is just me.
Try another cable sometimes new does not mean good. i've had a few car starters that were new, but were no good I now check them befor leaving the store. Bring the cord back and have them check continuity.

I want to get the boys pictures off of it before I do anything with it. Id really rather just have laptop and work at the dining room table.
In that case take the hard drive out of the computer and put it into an external case so the pics can be imported to your laptop. Set the jumpers to be 'master' or 'single' drive on a circuit. The external can be used as additional storage with the laptop and will be portable for sharing files and use with other computers you may have.
Oh! I never thought of doing that!
