I thought we had a thread regarding this horror but I couldn't find it -

Should the newspaper refrained from printing this?

I commented in another thread under the cell block about it. I was on that platform waiting for the same train 24 hrs earlier.
I find it ridiculous that NY Post put it on the front page.
I think it should be printed. Photography is at its best when it is provocative, and this was news. Is it any different than when pictures come back of people carrying broken and shattered kids out of a bombed Afghani marketplace? Or like the famous picture of the vulture stalking the Sudanese kid?

The sad part of this particular shot is that there were probably a hundred or more people down there, and nobody helped the dude.

This just breaks my heart.....Yeah, I have feelings.
I heard about this yesterday. I don't know that there was time for people to help him. Some guy pushed him right in front of that train. The guy that took the photo SAID he was trying to use his camera flash to alert the train operator.

To my knowledge, they didn't catch the guy that pushed him.

I don't like censuring so I'm okay with the photo although it has to be hard on his family/friends.

Mine too. I don't even want to decorate the stupid Christmas tree I just bought anymore. Thanks Donovan.
Good to know, SC. Thanks.
It's in bad taste. Insensitive to the family.

I have to agree.

As much as I do not agree with censorship; because photography can say so much at times. I think it is a huge blow to a family.

but its too late and probably sold a lot of papers..........
The "pusher" is a mentally ill street vendor from Rockefeller Ctr.. Approx. 100 people were running and screaming trying to get the train operator's attn.

Trust me - after being in same spot 24 hrs. earlier, those operators care about nothing but schedule. They literally stop at the platform, put thier upper body out of their door and look for any feet in doors. No feet seen and WHOOSH - that fucking train goes. Me and 3 of my family members who are noobs to the subway ended up on the lap of NY strangers every time. They kept looking at us like "fucking rookie".

The freelance photog. was supposedly trying to flash his camera to get his attn. also but, I find it amazing that he was able to catch this fucking 'perfect' photo of the guy 20 secs. before he got creamed by the train.

I have no problem really w/ NYT running it but, gawddam put that shit on the 2nd page or something so, his family doesn't have to be bombarded with it while walking down the street.

Donovan, you don't know that. What about the person taking the shot may have intervened afterwards?

Look this is a cause that is very close to my heart, and I believe that these pictures as disturbing as they are, really need to be out there in order to create awareness and support for these people who are the most vulnerable on the planet. I hope it provoked people to donate money to http://www.wfp.org/

Aussie, I think his comment may have been in regards to the people standing around the train station and not that child.
I wonder how many papers they printed and sold. If they printed an excess then they just knew death would be a hit by a train

Yes now you say it, I see what he means in that context.
It's not that good of a picture actually... the exposure settings are all wrong and the flash is way too bright.

I kind of buy the photographers story... if he was trying to just photograph it, the picture would be better quality. Besides, there were many people closer to the altercation who could have intervened but didn't.

There's a video of it here (before he threw him on the tracks):

Do you realize how many years it took me to get the image of that baby scraped off of where it had been burned into my retinas? Thanks, now it is back.
The photo is in bad taste, no doubt. But its one image and how many assholes are running around out there with their pants hangiong off their ass? Thats seriously in bad taste
I don't see the big deal in printing the pic or in giving the photographer a bunch of shit about taking the pic instead of helping the guy. That train is rolling pretty fast, the photog would have to cover some distance, get hold of the guy and pull him up, is he even capable of doing that? Would he put himself in danger by trying? How many people would? Obviously no one else on the platform did either.
Monday morning quarterbacking is easy, especially from behind a keyboard. Your entitled to your opinions, but keep in mind you weren't there.
Six, you have a good point there. I read a print interview with the photographer. He said he was a lot further away than it seemed. He had just been snapping pictures at random, and did not even realize that he had captured that image. He tried running toward the guy, but it was more to try to get the attention of the conducter. Thing is, there were plenty of people standing a lot closer who did nothing to help the guy up. Typical NY behavior I think. If it does not personally affect them, they ignore it.
