Woman kills attacker at Riverview apartment complex
Shelley Rossetter, Times Staff Writer
Saturday, August 17, 2013 10:57am

RIVERVIEW — Early Saturday morning, Cristy Vasilakos got into an argument with her boyfriend.

Daniel Robertson had been drinking, she said, and was angry. She kicked him out of her apartment at the Grand Oaks in Riverview just before 6 a.m.

But he came storming back, she said. Demanding to be let in, he smashed two of her windows and banged on her front door. At some point, the fight moved outside to the sidewalk.

The noise awoke neighbors, including Vickie Rock, who was staying the night at her boyfriend's apartment upstairs.

Rock, 50, of Riverview, came outside armed with a .45-caliber handgun and saw Robertson beating Vasilakos with a metal object, said Hillsborough sheriff's spokesman Larry McKinnon.

When Rock tried to intercede, Robertson turned on her. Rock suffered several facial injuries before firing at least one round and striking Robertson, McKinnon said.

Robertson, 56, staggered away and was found dead in the parking lot a few minutes later by deputies.

As detectives wrapped up their investigation Saturday afternoon, Vasilakos, 40, stood barefoot outside her apartment door, smoking a cigarette and trying to make sense of what happened.

"He was hurting me," she said, fresh scratches visible on her cheek and shoulder. "I don't know what he was going through. I'm just really upset."

Robertson had anger issues, she said, but had never attacked her before. The two met in church more than eight years ago and had only recently started dating. She works as a security guard and has three children, who were not home at the time of the shooting. He worked on cellphone towers, she said, and did prison ministry. He lived a few apartment buildings away from where he died.

"He wasn't a bad guy, which is why it is hard to believe this happened," she said. "I really thought he was a mentor for me."

Robertson was charged with possessing drug paraphernalia in 2005 and failure to appear in court in 2006, state records show. The disposition of those cases was unclear Saturday. Rock has no criminal record in Florida.

Vasilakos had never met Rock before. She hadn't realized Rock had a gun until it went off. Even then, she didn't know how serious Robertson's injuries were. "I had no idea he was dying," she said.

She understands why Rock fired, though.

"She was doing her part," Vasilakos said. "I feel like she stood her ground. He was on top of her when she shot him."

No charges were filed Saturday. Since 2005, Florida has had a "stand your ground" law, which allows the use of lethal force with no duty to retreat if a person reasonably believes his or her life is in danger.

A woman answered the door at Rock's house on a quiet street in Riverview just after 5 p.m. Saturday. She opened the door just wide enough for a large dog to stick its nose out and for her to peer out of one eye — the other was swollen shut. She said she had no comment.

Investigators will work with the Hillsborough County State Attorney's Office to determine whether any charges will be filed.

Times reporter Elisabeth Parker and Times researcher Natalie Watson contributed to this report.
Wouldn't regular self defense laws cover a situation like that?
Yes, SYG doesn't come into play other than she was not in her own home. SYG, Castile Doctrine in Florida now extends outside the home which allows the defender to take a weapon outside to come to the aid of another.
Once she was attacked, it comes as simple self defense
She is on solid legal ground

That shooting gets my blessing. Priest
New York state is really cracking down on enforcement of gun laws.

Today LE busted a ring of illegal gun smugglers from the South into NYC where they were to be sold outta cars on the lower East Side or at a Brooklyn rap studio. The smugglers used buses headed for Chinatown for cheap, easy, transportation of broken down guns into luggage. Really low overhead costs.

Investigators went undercover for a year and confiscated 250+ guns, most of which were stolen. They were large-caliber pistols and military-grade weapons modified to improve aim and avoid detection, according to reports.

A wanna-be rapper set LE in motion. He was apparently alluding to the operation on social media. What a dipshit.

At the press conference today, Bloomberg took the opportunity to defend and pump the "stop and frisk" policy that's come under fire lately because fear of the policy is what prompted the recent major smuggling transaction and subsequently the arrest of nearly 20 people.

I think it's good to see gun laws being enforced when it comes to illegal sales like this; these guns weren't headed for responsible owners. The politics and propaganda associated with the busts is always a bit if an eye-roller though, IMO.

Bragging about illegal firearms on social media?!

Another gun story with a happy ending. Yay.

An escaped inmate in Iowa was shot and killed by a 71-year-old homeowner Tuesday after taking the man and his wife hostage for four hours.

On Sunday, Rodney Eugene Long, 38, broke out of the Clarinda Correctional Facility, where he was serving a five-year sentence for burglary.

Long shot a sheriff's deputy, then stole the deputy's car, leading officials on a 40-minute chase before he crashed the vehicle and took off running into a wooded area, according to the Daily Iowegian. A massive manhunt ensued Monday.

That night at about 10:15, Long broke into the Bedford home of 71-year-old Jerome Mauderly and his wife, 66-year-old Carolyn Mauderly, the Des Moines Register reported. The Mauderleys told officials that Long held them in their bedrooms, used their cell phones and disabled the other phones in the home. Authorities have not said who Long was calling.

After about four hours, the couple was able to obtain access to a shotgun kept in their home, and Jerome Mauderly fatally shot Long.

The Mauderleys were uninjured, and the deputy shot by Long is in stable condition and expected to fully recover.

A Shotgun really is good for protection in the home, no need to have a good aim!

True that you don't need pin point accuracy but it sure helps to not fuck up your stuff with the stray pellets. Blood is rather hard to paint over also, I did some "Crime Scene Recovery" for a while. I keep a street sweeper by the back door incase I need to clear an area, but prefer a handgun for close in.
Today in Memphis...

"This morning at Westside Elementary School, a Kindergarten student brought a firearm to school in his backpack. While waiting for the opening bell in the cafeteria, the firearm discharged accidentally inside the child's backpack. Nobody was injured, and staff immediately took possession of the backpack. SCS Security and the Memphis Police Department responded quickly, and the matter is now under investigation.

There is no evidence at this time of harmful intent; however, weapons of any kind are prohibited on campuses, and this student will be disciplined in accordance with the state's zero tolerance policy. The safety of our students and staff is of the utmost importance. Staff is trained to handle emergency situations, and all students were kept safe and calm while this matter was handled."

A 5 year old with a loaded gun in his backpack. Pisses me off.

If people wanna teach their kids to handle guns while they're that young and supervise them at all times when their guns aren't locked up, that's their choice.

But, when kindergartners show up to school with loaded weapons, the packing kid is endangered, along with every other kid and teacher in the school.

Certainly hope a CPS investigation is started immediately on this one.

Yes I'm sure it would mess up the walls somewhat, but being alive to fix the mess would be a bonus.

Just plain fucking stupid, Thank God no kids were hurt.
The kids should never have unfettered access to a gun at that age or for quite a while.

Yep.

And, today in Slaughter, Louisiana, an 8 year old boy decided to help the town earn its name.

He shot his 90 year old relative in the back of the head while she was watching tv.

He told cops that he accidentally shot her, but they have ruled it a homicide and claim that he shot her after playing the Grand Theft Auto video game.

The boy can't be charged with a crime because he's under 10 years old; he was released to his parents.

The names and the details of how the hell an 8 year old had access to a loaded gun have not been released; investigation underway.

Here's the story:
http://www.foxnews.com/us/2013/08/24/la-...ideo-game/
So wrong in so many ways, why the fuck is an 8 yr old playing GTA?
Why was the weapon not secured?

Start punishing these irresponsible people in such a way that it hurts! Make them do some serious time & hit 'em in the wallet too, right down to wages garnished if they don't have ready cash. I'm so sick of these stories. I'm glad I was able to gasp while reading it because sometimes I don't even hesitate, I just move on to the next godawful story.
So a loaded gun is left in a kids reach and they blame it on the video game? Yeah ok. My son has been playing GTA since he was 5 and would never think of shooting an old lady in the back of the head. I realize some kids are on different maturity levels, but don't blame it on the video game. This was a combination of a mentally unstable kid with access to a loaded gun and that's it.
The person ultimately to blame in this story is the person who left the loaded weapon (or ammo and weapon) unsecured with a child in the house, I agree.

The kid may have been unstable mentally.

And/or he might not have had a balance and parental supervision in his life, like your kids do, sally.

IDK; I think it's possible the kid was just too young and unguided to separate earning points for shooting people in a simulation vs. earning points fot shooting RL people, without being mentally unstable otherwise. Also, quite possible to me that his parents believe or pushed the "accident" story.

Though, again, had he not access to a gun, the homicide wouldn't have happened in any case.
This is off the cuff, but why don't they just have people take a written test (kind of like the one you take for a driving permit) and if you pass that and the background requirements, they give you your i.d. card and with that, you can go buy your stupid gun anywhere you want (a store, gun show or whatever). And maybe it expires every 4 -6 years or something so you have to renew it before you can buy more guns (you wouldn't need to renew it unless you wanted to buy more guns; you could keep the ones you'd already purchased). Maybe a test of that nature would teach some of these idiots about proper care and storage of their weapons.

It's being reported that the gun used to kill the old woman belonged to her. Either no one knows where she kept it or they simply aren't saying.

I don't have any sympathy for this kid. At 8 yrs. old one knows the difference between right & wrong, add to that he tried to hide that he had done this deliberately, he KNEW he had done wrong. Of course there will be all kinds of excuses made. I'm so sick of stupid people & their stupid decisions.
