I'm surprised to read that more soldiers have died by their own hand than in combat for the past three years.
A growing number of active-duty sailors, Marines and soldiers committed suicide last year, despite intensive government and community efforts to stem the wartime trend.
The result is that for the third year running, more troops took their own lives than were killed in action, according to preliminary Defense Department statistics.
The uptick coincides with more than 11 years of sustained combat and growing numbers of combat veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder, which is estimated to affect as many as one in five who served in Iraq or Afghanistan, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs’ National Center for PTSD.
This breaks my heart. These men and women sacrifice so much for their country. The military needs to do a better job of taking care if them when they return home. I sometimes think that these people see and do things in this ear that no one can overcome.
One of my son's friends mom committed suicide two weeks after she came home from deployment. He was 8. Both of his parents were in the military. His Dad now works for the NYSP as an investigator in the Cyber Crimes Division. Every time A is over I just want to hug him even though I know that nothing will ever heal his heart.

They can't do anything until someone asks for help & unfortunately there is a stigma attached to that.
True. It shouldn't be that way.
Not really surprised by the military suicide stats, but it's very sad. Serving during war time (regardless of how one feels about the war) is a huge sacrifice on many levels, far beyond the time the soliders spend on active duty.
There are about 38,000 suicides per year in the US. Homicides are under 15,000 per year. A lot more people kill themselves than other people, inside and outside of the military. I don't know how the military suicide rates compare with the general population rates, but imagine they're even higher due to PTSD.
I trust that the military has strong suicide prevention programs and counseling. But, as Duchess pointed out, it's a big challenge getting those who are contemplating taking their own lives to reach out for help. Stigma, depression, apathy...lots of factors.
