The verdict was no verdict. Crap.

The verdict is "no unanimous verdict". They're 'effin hopelessly deadlocked!!!!!!!!!!!

July 18th retrial for penalty phase only.

Jury dismissed.

Hell, if I understand correctly, Jodi gets to stay at Sheriff Joe's jail with all of her friends for months. She won't be transferred to max security prison until she's sentenced.

Arghhh...

That shows just how delusional Jodi is.

She should be elated. But, she probably figured that she'd won them over with her little speech and surely they'd all refuse to sentence her to death.

The Alexander family members are all crying. Must feel like this is never gonna end for them.

P.s. Beth Karas said in all of her years in the courtroom, she has never seen a deadlock announcement presented as verdict; me neither. That was weird.

Jury is giving a press statement shortly.

ETA: Jury has rescinded offer to speak with the press today; press conference/statement cancelled.

I feel like I'm misunderstang something. Why am I hearing some media outlets say this is a mistrial?

I'm hearing it's just a mistrial of the penalty phase. I also heard she may be able to get a new defense. I guess we'll see.

JsMom is correct, a mistrial is declared for the penalty phase only when sentencing deliberations result in a deadlock.

The guilty verdict for premeditated murder was already decided and it stands firm.

A new jury will be selected, briefed on the case, and deliberate whether Jodi should be sentenced to life or death. This will begin on July 18th.

I've heard that Juan may decide whether or not to proceed with another death penalty phase based on the jury's feedback. If only one or two jurors voted against the d.p., he'd probably pursue another death penalty phase. If more...maybe he (the family?) will agree to LWOP.

I wonder if the roles were reversed (Travis murdered Jodi) if some of the jury members would have the same problem giving HIM the death penalty.

I don't fault the jury. At least they found her guilty (unlike Casey Anthony). I think they did their best.

There was an 8-4 split in favor of sentencing Arias to death.

I feel the same and honestly don't understand the complete shock by so many.

Maybe because the jury was pretty quick with the strongest verdicts in the guilt and aggravation phases?

The split was 8 jurors in favor of death and 4 in favor of life; figured it would only be one or two hold outs on the death penalty. Would love to hear what the 4 considered mitigating factors.

It'll surprise me if Martinez and the Alexanders decide to offer Arias LWOP. Wouldn't surprise me, however, if Arias rejected such an offer anyway and demanded life with the possibility for parole.

Good news: though Arias will not be transferred to maximum security prison until after sentencing, Sheriff Joe has her on lock down 23 hours a day. He's also announced that her first amendment rights were respected with the interviews that he's already allowed and there will be no more.

Given the 84 split, Juan and the Alexander family better be ready for another battle. If it were only 1 or 2 jurors reluctant, I think a retrial on the sentencing phase would be obvious. 4? Not so sure. I guess it depends on what the family is willing to endure.

I would like to think that gender was irrelevant in the jurors inability to agree upon a unanimous verdict (be it "life" or "death").

And, there are currently 3 women on Arizona's death row already.

However, the jury foreman (male) is giving interviews. I haven't heard any of them in full, but HLN is playing a clip where the foreman says that it was difficult for him to "look at" Arias and connect that image with her horrible crimes.

So, maybe there is some validity to appearance and gender preventing some jurors from sentencing Arias to death, even though they found her guilty of premeditated murder with an aggravating factor of cruelty.

It'll be interesting to hear interviews with more of the jurors too.

Well, this took me off guard.

Just heard another clip from an interview with the jury foreman.

He said he did believe that Jodi Arias was mentally and physically abused by Travis Alexander. Smiley_emoticons_skeptisch

For some reason (aside from the premeditated guilty verdict) it surprises me greatly that he believes Jodi Arias to be an abuse victim/survivor.

Maybe Arias's claim of wanting to help "other" abuse victims was considered a strong mitigating factor by some of the jurors?

After reading that I think we should all be immensely grateful she was found guilty of first degree murder. The comment he made is mind blowing & it makes me wonder how many other people felt the same way. I'm wondering too if those that couldn't give her death are all men.

Correction:

Just heard the foreman interview clip again.

He said that he believed that Arias had been "verbally and mentally" abused. I misheard him to say "physically" abused previously.

Surprises me no less that he believes her to be an abuse victim/survivor, but corrected for accuracy.

I didn't really pay a lot of attention, but wasn't there something about Travis calling her nasty names? She probably deserved it, the crazy psycho bitch. Ms Einstein!
