It's being reported that a number of musicians intend to join Stevie Wonder in his boycott of states with a SYG law. Whether this is actually true remains to be seen. Dollar wise, this boycott wouldn't put a hurtin' on many of these people so they certainly could do so without it really effecting their finances.

I don't recognize a few of those names but the rest of them are multimillionaires, they can afford to put their money where their mouth is, so to speak.
In general, I don't have a problem with that law but I do think it needs some tweakin'.
The woman, I think her name is Marissa Alexander, got 20 yrs. for firing a warning shot, yeah, it was irresponsible but c'mon, 20 yrs.? The man she was trying to scare away had threatened to kill her. I better go read the story in its entirety before I shoot my mouth off too much.

There is nothing requiring you to retreat (and read) before shooting your mouth off.
I swear . . . it's the law.

Terrible habit of mine, sometimes I embarrass myself but I'm quickly over it.

I was dead against the SYG law, then I saw some of the names on the boycott list, now I am reconsidering.

So, if these musicians follow through, these are the states that will be deprived of their live shows. These states have enacted “Stand Your Ground” laws that remove the duty to retreat before using force in self-defense.
Alabama
Arizona
Florida
Georgia
Indiana
Kentucky
Louisiana
Mississippi
Montana
Nevada
New Hampshire
Oklahoma
Pennsylvania
Tennessee
Texas
Utah
Other states may have adopted a stand your ground doctrine through judicial interpretation of their self-defense laws, but those states are not included in this list.
California's self defense jury instructions, for example, allow defendants to stand their ground (respond with force without retreating); I'd bet none of these performers would boycott California venues.
But, California (and other state's without SYG laws, but with SYG-like self defense clauses) advise the jury that the beliefs and actions of the defendant be evaluated as either justified or not based on what the jury considers that a reasonable person in the same circumstances would do.
Florida and other SYG states, on the other hand, advise the jury to consider whether the beliefs and actions were "reasonable" to the specific defendant him or herself.
Big difference. I think that the "pussy defense" would have been less likely to succeed in California than Florida (that doesn't mean that Zimmerman would have been convicted here; just that it would have required a different strategy by the defense and may have been more difficult to get an acquittal here, imo).
I read that Alabama is currently reviewing its SYG laws. I hope that others do too. Not as a result of one verdict in one case, but because I believe that it makes sense to revisit the intent of the laws and consider whether they've wound up making it too easy for people to legally kill others when it should/could have been avoided.
JMO, understanding that others here disagree.

Yeah, you say that now.
But, just wait til you start really jonesin' to see Young Jeezy live and you have to cross state lines to do it.
That's when this boycott will affect you personally; financially and emotionally.
Bet you'll be singing a different tune then!

Most artists make the majority of their fortunes off of concert tours, and the bigger names usually spend big.
So, wasn't too surprised to read that JayZ, the Rolling Stones, Usher, Madonna and a few others are now reportedly "not officially confirmed" for the boycott.
Don't know if they backed off once their accountants ran the numbers or if the reporters this morning jumped the gun.

I don't see how this particular boycott would really influence states to review their laws in any event.

LOL, I bet the accountants and lawyers are having a field day in the back office. You decide to protest by breaking How Many contracts? Signed in good faith, deposit checks cashed? How many people you going to put out of work?

I was a bit surprised to see the Stones on the list of potential boycotters.
You'd think they'd want to dedicate Gimme Shelter to Skittles.

"You've got to be kidding me," he said. "So 700 black people, mostly young children and young people were slaughtered in Chicago last year by black people, and not a peep out of Stevie Wonder. Are you kidding me? What is this, 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest'? How brain-dead do you have to be? How strangled by denial, how dishonest, how cheap do you have to be to focus on a clear-cut case where all the evidence, from the DOJ, from the FBI, from the army of investigative specialists in Florida determined that George Zimmerman acted in self-defense against a life-threatening attack by hoodlum, dope-smoking Trayvon Martin?"
Nugent also said that he would pray for "Stevie Wonder and all these other numbnuts who think that Trayvon Martin's life is more important than the tens of thousands of slaughtered blacks at the hands of blacks."
So tell us how you really feel, Ted.

I think Ted and Cracker are related.
I do agree with him somewhat, just not the part about George Zimmerman acting in self-defense against a life-threatening attack by hoodlum, dope-smoking Trayvon Martin.
