DESERT.
I.E - nothing but sand!
Again? Changing the rules as you go?
You understand the meaning of "desert island" about as well as you do "none practical", CN.
The adjective "desert" connotes a "desolate and sparsely occupied or unoccupied" area and does not imply that the island was previously inhabited and later deserted. The term "desert island" therefore typically refers to an undiscovered island. Note that a desert island does not have to be a desert.

I'll be busy focusing on what I'm seeing in my new and foreign environment (home); capturing it in my memory bank. I'm looking forward, not backward.
Those two paragraphs are totally at odds with each other, the first one says you want to keep your brain healthy to remember the past the next one says you are concentrating on looking forward not backward. So which is it?
Will reading a dictionary exercise your brain and keep it healthy? debatable. It might broaden your vocabulary which is pointless because you've got no one to talk to anyway.
I never heard an inventor or thinker saying the secret to their success was regularly reading a dictionary! I wonder why? Probably because sitting reading a dictionary is retarded.

I needed a dictionary last night for the word 'malfeasance'.
Yes, yes.
I watched 'Its a Wonderful Life' again.
Mr. Potter accuses George of malfeasance when his bumbling uncle loses $8K.
And Duchess?
II shed a tear or two again.

The radio program desert island discs assumes there is fuck all on the island that's the ENTIRE POINT that both you and maggotyboo have missed completely.
You are the one pulling random things out of your ass to try and explain and justify your choices. “I don't need heroine my island has magic mushrooms!” Which is almost as retarded as clang wanting an ipod with 10000 songs as his luxury item.
What next? “My island has a Dairy Queen and broadband access?!”

You don't make any sense, CN.
Here we go, one more time. Just for you.
Memorization and learning - helps the brain stay active and healthy. Indisputable. I didn't choose the dictionary, but if I had, I wouldn't be "reading" it like a novel. I'd be using it to stimulate my brain with those types of activities, like you'd use the pictures in your book to stimulate your soul.
"Looking forward" doesn't mean erasing all memory or feelings from the past. As my brain and memory remains strong, so does retention of things past. Looking forward means anticipating or focusing on what's ahead. I can focus on the present and the future while remembering the past, without stagnating or moving backwards. I do it every day - the geography is irrelevant.
I don't really put much stock in other people's "secret to my success..." claims, even here where there's lots of room to focus on success over solo survival. I really don't know or care what, if any, role the dictionary has played in success stories.

Of course you are! No one said you aren't, memories are a given unless your are senile or have dementia.
HOTD seems to be saying “I want to keep my memories! Oh better read a dictionary then!”
Nonsense!

I think you might need a little heroin right about now. Chill.
Have I heard the radio program? No.
Did you define desert island, according to how you envision one? No.
Does my knowledge/vision of a desert island differ from yours? Apparently so.
Is my definition of a desert island accurate? Yes.
Are there mushrooms on desert tropical islands? Yes. Fungus. It be there.
If you wanted to limit my thoughts or restrict my hypothetical answers/experiences, you should have defined the parameters.
I'm not cheating or intentionally getting you all excited, I'm just working with what I've got and having fun here.
But, you're becoming a real drag. So, I'll leave you alone on your island and pop back into reality in another thread.

No I'm afraid you don't either.
When you said you would take puzzle books onto the island that made perfect sense but I'm afraid it doesn't matter how you try and rephrase or re-explain it a dictionary makes no sense.
To me a dictionary has two roles, 1 - looking up rude words when you are a kid (lol) and 2 - used as a reference in combination with something else, another written work which you don't have on the island anyway.
Sorry I just don't find endless lists of random words in alphabetical order intellectually stimulating. I could create elaborate fantasies and flights of fancy in my mind, no dictionary necessary because thoughts are purely conceptual.

Bold red - now you're getting it.

Just let her keep the damn mushrooms. When you're in severe pain and don't know what is causing it the last thing you want to take is a drug that magnifies all of your feelings, which in the case of severe pain would be fear, panic and of course pain. Plus it's going to be hard to kill yourself quickly with them if it's too unbearable.

Have I mentioned how glad I'll be when I'm sitting on the beach at Hanalei Bay and how I won't have a dictionary weighing down my beach bag?

Good one, MS...
It would almost be applicable and funny if you were stranded on an uninhabited or sparsely populated Hawaiian island and I'd actually chosen the dictionary.
Almost.

I thought the fact there was fuck all on the island would be obvious given the nature of the questions but no. I was forgetting myself and where I was, namely Mock. Where if there is a nit to be picked you can almost guarantee it will be. Since this thread started people have thought they can “break the rules or the system” pointless, made me “head of security of the island” untrue, been accused of “making up the rules as I go along” even though the rules of desert island discs haven't changed for decades, and the people that accused me of “making up the rules” then went on to make up the rules themselves and complain when I called them on it! And another little gem “all desert islands have magic mushrooms” not this one sister. Did you look up the definition of desert island in your dictionary? You'll be in there for a few hours now then? Improving your IQ by reading random words in alphabetical order.
I really thought desert island discs was too straightforward to fuck up but one again Mock has managed it. A simple idea tirned into the Swiss family Robinson!

I AM with HotD on the 'desert island' bit.
Think 'lyrics to Gilligan's Island'.
... something, something, something, ON THE SHORES OF THIS UNCHARTED DESERT ISLE...
BINGO!
That island had more trees and vegetation than the whole of Scotland.
Oh...
Magic mushrooms too.

Less rebels and free thinkers more people who steal money from the bank while playing Monopoly when nobodies watching.
The entire point of this thread went sailing over your collective heads like a paper aeroplane.
So enjoy your magic mushrooms, abundant as we know on ALL desert islands, you won't even have to forage for them yourself the trained monkey butlers will bring them to you. Then get off your faces in the desert island disco that I also didn't say wasn't there!
This thread should renamed desert island dicks.

That made me think of Dick. *sigh* Now I'm thinking about raggin' on him about the goat cooking in his back yard at this time of year. I think it was a goat he used to feed the neighborhood at Christmas or maybe I'm having a senior moment.
