KICKING A HABIT
#1

Sally is trying to quit smoking. It can't be easy given how addictive nicotine is. Have you ever kicked a habit? Got any words of wisdom for her?

Don't go cold turkey.

Do it gradually, cut down first then revert to nicotine patches and gum.

Or switch to electronic cigarettes, cheaper and healthier.

I bought the nicotine lozenges and they do help, I haven't smoked since Wednesday. The worst time is in the morning because the first thing I do when I get out of bed is make coffee and then sit outside and smoke a cigarette. Other than the three times that I was pregnant I've been doing that for 20 years.

Go Sally!! I've cut way back using these e-cigs. They're so damn close to real cigarettes, I don't know why I still light up sometimes.

http://www.vapor4life.com/vapor-zeus-eci...arter-kits. (meh, the link doesn't work for me so well...it's the Vapor4life Zeus line; they're awesome...puff, puff).

I've been trying to eat better too. I just loaded up the house with fruit and veggies, whey protein and wheat grass for chrissake.

I almost never eat red meat anymore simply because my son won't eat it so I tend to stick to chicken, turkey or veggie meals.

Finally...I'm not quitting but I have taken a hiatus from wine. I haven't had a glass of wine (or booze) in, I dunno, 3 or 4 months? Shocker, right? My daughter has been going through a bunch of crap...seemed like a good time to [pretend] to be a good roll model for her (her dad rarely drinks so it was no big deal for him). Besides, I don't know if it was age or wet brain or what, but I'd have one freaking glass of wine and it hit me like 10. I couldn't hold my booze anymore. *sobs*

GO SALLY!!

There's nothing wrong with red meat, all these tales of it being bad for you or it hangs around your colon for years is a myth and psychobabble pseudo science.

Wheat grass? Whey protein? You know what is an excellent source of protein? Red meat.

Eat a balanced diet there's no such thing as a miracle food.

Popeye says you lie. I didn't give up red meat; I just don't bother making it often since my son only eats it in spaghetti sauce or chili or something.

My husband is driving the whey protein, wheat grass drive. He's manic; he doesn't understand why granola cereal doesn't come sugar free. Midlife crisis; I'm just going along for the ride. I did put a teaspoon of Miracle Green in my coffee this morning. Not bad.

I'd rather have sugar than artificial sweeteners.

At least its naturally sourced. I thought whey protein was for bodybuilders? I used to use it when I was built like a water buffalo on steroids.

What does this miracle green do allegedly? I'm curious?

I smoked pretty regularly at 2 separate times in my life, and was able to quit each time, fairly easily.

I DO recommend going cold turkey as opposed to gradually trying to quit.

It's obviously easier for some more than others.

Guys always seem to have an easier time breaking a habit than women...

Sometimes meat disgusts me. I ordered the beef taquitos from this Mexican place we go to and they were packed full of strips of beef which reminded me of beef tongue. I couldn't eat it, it was gag inducing. Other times I could did into a bloody steak like a vulture. I would never go totally vegan, but for the most part I'm fine with just beans, vegetables and some seafood.

Wheat grass is supposed to be really good for you and known to ward off certain types of cancer. I remember reading that years ago in the booklet that came with my Juice Man Juicer lol.

Some artificial sweeteners are so bad for you it would do your health less damage if you were a crackhead.

But its your choice of course.

Yeah, that's what I hear. I use it in my coffee & it's in the diet soda I sometimes drink. I don't use great quantities of it but I do use it. Smiley_emoticons_slash

The FDA banned aspartame TWICE!

Do you know who pushed it through a third time?

Dick Cheney and Halliburton!

Be afraid, be very afraid.

I got the whey protein to put in smoothies I make for my son. He doesn't eat enough protein rich foods IMO especially considering how active he is.

The miracle (or super green) crap I put in my coffee is supposedly "whole foods" ground in to powder. It's got a everything from seaweed to beets to brussel sprouts to ground artichoke and stuff in there. I eat pretty healthy normally but I don't routinely eat kale, red kidney beans or anything that comes from the ocean regularly. Plus fruit...I like bananas and pears but I doubt I get the recommended amount of fruits or veggies every day. I don 't eat "fast food" but I had a protein bar and a little bowl of Cheerios for dinner last night. That was my fast food . Smiley_emoticons_slash

I doubt it will make some miracle change in my health (I'm ok as is anyway) but it can't hurt. My husband whines , errr, I mean complains, about feeling tired all the time. He's hoping a diet change will boost his energy levels.

Protein rich healthy foods - turkey/chicken breast, salmon and tuna, pork loin chops, tofu/bean curd, beans, eggs, nuts and seeds, milk and yoghurt.

You put powdered seaweed in your coffee? Why? Never eaten seaweed in my life and never will thanks.

Is your husband eating enough calories per day? the recommded daily amount for a man is 2500.

I quit smoking about 3 yrs ago cold, it bugged me about a week. I still smoke a cigar about once a week though. You can do it Sally just substitute a cig for a carrot stick or celery or something. Willpower is what it takes and you sound strong enough to do it. Give it a week.

I gave up margarine this year. That shit can't be good for you. At first sandwiches seemed a little dry, and toast was pretty weird , but I'm getting used to it.

I gave up low fat spreads as well a while ago.

Not even flies will touch low fat spreads.

If its not good enough for flies who will happily eat dog shit then its not good enough for me.
