I'm not sure what he's going to recommend regarding duct work/registers. Our registers are either in the floor or a couple inches above floor level (most are in the floor). I've read that it's much more ideal for AC registers to be near the ceiling.

My husband is going to love his Father's Day present! I'm going to wrap up the signed contract and put it in a card for him.

I went back about 7 pages and we are all grumbling about the cold/snow. It made me laugh. The Mockers up north were talking about how sucky it is to have to drive in it.

Last Winter did suck ass. More than usual. February lasted for 8 wks.

Yeah, I'm not going to trim this post on my phone but I just read that if u get an AC system with enough "blow up" capability, it's do-able. They also have split systems or something where they put in a separate, upper register in up to 4 rooms or something but that sounds ugly (and it's more pricey). I'll see what the guy recommends. Typically our downstairs area is bearable but the bedrooms are all on the second floor and it gets hot as hell up there certain times of the year. I dunno...we have 4 bedrooms; maybe the split system would suffice(although I have this vision of an energy war between the hot air attempting to rise from downstairs battling with the cooler air coming out of the vents upstairs=hugemongous energy bills.

We'll see.

Such is the case in most 2 or more story homes. We have them here, but they're not the norm. Ceiling fans help.

I have ceiling fans in all of the bedrooms. I also had attic fans installed about 10 years ago. I've already spent way more money trying to keep the upstairs cool than if I'd just bought central A/C years ago.

I like the look of the ceiling fans anyway though so what the hell.

I'm really wondering about the floor register issue; I need to research it more. If it requires more force to push the cold air up I also assumes that means a bigger motor (or whatever) and bigger energy bills when we DO run the dumb thing.

HOWEVER, I asked the guy that's coming out (and read it online too...) apparently, when you're not running the dumb thing it costs you $0. I assumed if it was plugged in, it was consuming energy (perhaps significant amounts) but he tells me (and again, I read) that when they're off, they're off so if we don't use it much...who gives a shit if it has a big motor and occasionally costs us a boatload of money to run? Trying to sleep when it's so hot out you're sweating and you can't even stand to have a sheet touch you is NOT pleasant.

I'll find out more after I meet with him today!

Chances are he will try to sell you the new ductwork (it means more money for him) when what you already have in place should be sufficient.
