The news?

It may have been the news, if I watch TV I usually scan whats on and most of the time settle for Columbo or the Andy Griffith show or something. Most television is all fluff and no substance today. Although I do like that Flash show when I remember and me and my daughter watch it, there are so many commercials I get distracted. For a 60 min show it ends up being really 40 min. worth of show. It drives me so nuts it takes another week to get over it.

A hunter tracking down a mountain lion has stumbled upon a biological mystery.

Fish and Game officials say a male mountain lion involved in an attack on a dog near Preston, Idaho, was killed last week near the Utah border.

^ A photo released Thursday by Idaho Fish and Game shows the big cat had another set of fully-formed teeth and whiskers growing out of the top of its head (HOTD: looks like a chicken head, to me).

Wildlife experts say it's possible the teeth could be the remnants of a conjoined twin that died in the womb and was absorbed into the other fetus. They then grew on their own.

Another explanation is a so-called "teratoma" tumor. This type of abnormality, whose Greek name translates to "monster tumor," can grow teeth and hair. In humans, it can grow fingers and toes.

Kin Kin Ka Jou...

I'm glad the Florida woman in this story didn't have a heart attack; I bet Carsman would have. Smiley_emoticons_wink

A 99-year-old woman was sleeping in her Miami home when she was reportedly awoken by something “caressing her face.” Opening her eyes, the woman was shocked to find this bizarre-looking animal sitting on her chest.

The woman called her son-in-law who rushed over and found the animal in the basement. He managed to safely lure it into a cage.

The next morning, the animal was transported to the South Dade Avian and Exotic Animal Medical Center and was examined by a veterinarian. The creature, the vet confirmed, was a kinkajou.

A local resident saw the story in the news and claimed his exotic pet, Banana, who had been left in the care of relatives and escaped.

According to National Geographic, kinkajous are nocturnal tree-dwelling mammals typically found in the tropical forests of Central and South America. Related to the raccoon, the animals have “incredible” prehensile tails that they use “much like another arm.” Kinkajous are also “able to turn their feet backwards to run easily in either direction along branches or up and down trunks.” Very cool creature.

While keeping wild animals like kinkajous as pets can be legal as long as you have a special permit, animal welfare experts generally don't recommend the practice. Kinkajous in particular may pose a health risk to their human owners as the animals have been known to scratch and bite. Adequately replicating a rainforest habitat for a kinkajou is also difficult, thus compromising the animal’s quality of life.

“Having any animal as a pet means being responsible for providing appropriate and humane care. Where wild animals are concerned, meeting this responsibility is usually impossible. People, animals and the environment suffer the consequences,” warns the Humane Society.

I saw that story the other day. Could you imagine waking up to that thing sitting on your chest, I'd probably have a heart attack. He's cute in his own way, but very bizarre looking. Especially for most people who have never heard of a fucking kinkajou before.

It would be very freaky waking up to that, or any animal or person I didn't know really.

Kinkajou babies are effin' adorable though.

I had a snake for a while that I adopted from a friend who couldn't keep him anymore. And, I always thought I wanted a monkey for a pet when I was little.

But, I wouldn't consider owning an exotic pet today -- it would feel selfish.

That's a darling lil' critter but I'd shit a brick if I woke up to an adult one on my chest trying to snuggle.

As cute as that baby kinkajou is I'd even freak out if I woke up to that little guy sitting on my chest. My first reaction would probably be to fling the little bastard across the room not knowing what it was. Then I'd feel guilty that I may have hurt him.

Hairballs

For those who get grossed out easily or aren't interested in medical oddities, you probably want to skip this post.

A couple of years ago, I read about an American girl and an Indian girl who had both had huge hairballs removed from their stomachs. They both almost died because they couldn't eat or drink. This is the 9 pound hairball, medically called a bezoar, surgically removed from the Indian girl.

Today, I read a similar case about another girl in India and learned a little more about the condition. The compulsive eating of hair is called Trichophagia, and if left unchecked it can develop into Rapunzel Syndrome whereby a hairball develops a ‘tail’ which trails down into the lower intestine.

The body doesn't break down or absorb the fiber in hair, so the hair ingested builds up and grows. Rapunzel syndrome, which affects about 120 people per year, is predominantly found in young people who have learning disabilities or are emotionally disturbed.

My mom used to take me to the nursing home she worked at and there was an old guy who would sit there in his wheel chair picking his hair out all day and eating it. Pretty depressing place.

My favorite patient was Ms. Campbell who would pretend to shoot me with her fingers while taking a poop.
