I'm not sure on that as it could be state to state on the regulations on what only liability covers.

If you hit someone and killed them and you had no insurance, and it was your fault, how comfortable are you saying, "well too bad for them"? They have no recourse if it's your fault and you have nothing they (they = the survivors or family of the deceased) can sue you for.

The most they can get out of you is whatever their no-fault covers and anything you're worth like your house. They can garnish your check if you work on the books but if you have nothing they get nothing.

No, insurance is a good thing, we just need it reformed to make it insurance again and not gambling.

Liability and No Fault coverage are two different things. Liability is what you said - when the mva is your fault, it's coverage for the other guys vehicle and pain and suffering. If you didn't have liability, the other guy can sue you personally. No Fault is coverage for your medical bills when you are injured in your own vehicle no matter who is at fault for the mva. It is also called Personal Injury Protection. In NYS it's mandatory to have at least the basic $50k. It's for your own protection in the event you are injured and it's the other guys fault and he has no insurance. There is also extra coverage where you if you meet an injury threshhold, you can come back to your own policy for "pain and suffering" or liability if the guy has no insurance or just the basic.

I'm not totally sure on that point, but I think the 'medical' listed on my liability is only for the other people.

Well, I don't know. I mean I would feel 'bad', but accidents happen. No amount of money will bring back someone who is dead. If, for example, (god forbid) someone smashed into me and killed my little boy. I'm sure I would go after any amount I could get from it... but it would never make me feel any better about what had happened. There's just something 'wrong' about collecting money to 'pay' for someone's life. As for being a deterrent to people driving unsafely, I don't think it is. The possibility of jail time and such is more of a deterrent than 'oh my gosh, my insurance company will have to pay that person a lot of money!', ya know?

Yeah, I agree that the concept of insurance is a good thing, but the current application of it sucks ass.

Your right, there is no amount of money to compensate for someone's life. But say you hit and kill a man that is married with two kids. The money they get from a settlement will help support and educate those kids. The family lost a breadwinner. The bad thing is that the driver isn't the one that has to pay, it's their insurance company. The bad driver will get dropped and have to pay higher premiums to get coverage again but too bad. I see a lot of idiots that don't pay attention and cause mva's.

I have one lady that wass hit really hard in the rear. Sustained two herniated discs in her neck. Had to have fusion surgery, which by the way is very expensive. Two years later she still has an open wound on her neck that just won't heal. For some reason the surgical site wont heal despite numerous skin grafts. She is going to have to live with that for the rest of her life. And we will pay the medical bills to treat it for the rest of her life. No copays. No deductibles. That right there is why you need insurance.

Agent incompetence probably plays a role in the high rates/poor service thing.

You are right about that Frank. The agents usually have no idea what they are doing and tell the insured the wrong thing. Like you have rental coverage for 30 days. That doesn't mean they get to drive around in a rental for 30 days. It means you have UP to 30 days but limited to the number of days it takes to repair your vehicle. Or No Fault, we don't take the place of health insurance. So if you go to the doctor for a cold, we don't cover it. I hate agents.

Dopey ... I said that because you are an agent. Not agent in the strict sense, but agent as a representative.

AGENT
1. a person or business authorized to act on another's behalf: Our agent in Hong Kong will ship the merchandise. A best-selling author needs a good agent.
2. a person or thing that acts or has the power to act.
3. a natural force or object producing or used for obtaining specific results: Many insects are agents of fertilization.
4. an active cause; an efficient cause.
5. a person who works for or manages an agency.
6. a person who acts in an official capacity for a government or private agency, as a guard, detective, or spy: an FBI agent; the secret agents of a foreign power.
7. a person responsible for a particular action: Who was the agent of this deed?

I was having more fun with the 'tell off the fucking insurance companies' aspect of it. ::bigsmile:: (for which Ramsey is our token industry rep)
