I suppose it never occurred to you that the reason I don't know any racist jokes is because I'm not racist.

Woe is me ~ Ima a hayseed...28

I would think just the opposite actually. The more of a hick someone is, the more likely they are to know racists jokes.

Okay.... so let's see...

The last time you took your dog to the groomer, how many times did you have to remind them it was the DOG and not your matty natty dreads they were supposed to be cleaning up?

A 'nice' Caribbean neighborhood? What did you do... EAT the competition?

Do you get told all the time that your mom could be your sister? Is it your dad telling you that? Did you and your mom go to the same grade school?

Look how Cosmo I am!!! 78

Post the link as your proof that I lied...Do it now or shut the fuck up about it.

Yes, I'm delighted I called you what I did...I want to call you that right now but, it bothers MF so, I won't.

How about 'Jigga-boo'? There are tons of other black racial slurs that I'm sure would not be a problem since 'the n-word' is the only truly offensive racial slur, according to the article Julie posted.

My grandmother used to call little 'black' children 'wooly-boogers'. I didn't realize that was racist until I got old enough to even understand what it meant.

Meh.

I liked the dreads one...but, the one about the mom = the sister is more of a trailer park or West VA white people thing.

Well, I had to look up Caribbean stereotypes, and apparently common stereotypes include: dreads, cannibalism, having children at a very young age, lack of education, etc.

The only 'stereotype' I've been aware of is the whole Rastafarian/pot-smoking connection (Jamaica mostly). Which I guess does include 'dreads'.

It's just not much fun to mock really. Rasta folk come to my drum circles sometimes. Cool people. They certainly don't drone on and on about racism. In fact, I've never heard it mentioned.

No, Z's been through her initiation here and she shined through it all where you just dirtied the place with your snobbery and racism.

It's starting to appear that Julie thinks she is 'better' than people with African ancestry, because her family is Caribbean.

That should go over well.

Good gawd... Julie is racist toward light AND dark skinned people. 22

I've seen two pictures of her, one with Sinister and one by herself. She looked 10 times prettier in the one without Sinister.

Woah - I've never heard of the Cannibalism thing... did your sources say anything about which island that one is associated with?

Having children at a very young age? Hmmm..I would think that's applicable to a wide variety of people & it's more of a socio-economic thing than an ethnic thing.

Quote: lack of education, etc.

Funny....at the time my parents came here, those folks were coming to the US already educated or becoming hyper-educated. I've never heard that one...

In fact, this is something that is made fun of. How hard the parents push the kids & how strict they are.

LOL...that's because you're not listening. Rastafarians definitely talk about race....Also, reggae music is full of lyrics about "evil whitey"...but since they're speaking patois you may not perceive it - but it's there. These folks were enslaved / colonized - no way they are not talking about race. It's just that the conversations are different because the circumstances / perspectives are different.

Growing up, I blended in pretty well - that is, unless I wanted to speak with an accent I didn't. So, some people had no idea I was who / what I was. I am sharing this because people made pretty nasty remarks about Black immigrants living in the US - kind of along the lines of how folks are speaking about the Mexicans coming here and taking all the jobs. Black Americans & Carib Blacks do not necessarily get along. Black Americans & African Blacks living in the Amercicans don't seem to get along 100% either. In both cases the Americans are saying the immigrant groups "think they are better" & take all the jobs and the immigrant groups are saying the Americans are "lazy" and "uneducated."

My family has African ancestry, my husband is a dark skinned man & I have family members of all hues. I have dated all kinds of men from Mexican to Chinese to Black American. This "Julie is a racist" track is totally absurd. Several people here call me a NIGGER and I'm the racist? Ya'll need to adjust your meds.

Yes...I think I am better than you (no - I know I am better than you), and that is for one reason and one reason only:

Because I am.

Perhaps calling your dates, "Mexican" or "Chinese" (when in fact the first was Spanish and the second, Japanese) isn't the best strategy for keeping a boyfriend?

That's a blatantly unfair statement to make...You're making the presumption that she's not paying attention to the people she is socializing with.

Julie, it's not necessary to patronize any of us, contrary to how it comes across at times, many Mockers are very smart people, well read & absolutely aware of the world "out there".

You know you are right about that.
When we were restoring some of the brownstones in Bed Stuy we had most of our crew from Barbados & St. Lucia and they were known in the neighborhood by the American blacks. We would get harassed daily that we took jobs away from the locals and were under constant threats. They tried to bully us saying it was the law to hire locals.

But this is not just among the black community when it comes to work you know, Julie. This happens all over. You just only saw this at home because it was in your community and in your socioeconomic circles at the time.

Nope. Just something I saw that popped up a few times in searches.

Like I said... I didn't really find any of the stuff I saw 'mock worthy', because most of it would apply to many other groups across the board. Well, except for the cannibalism stuff... which was kind of weird since I would think that would apply more to certain African villages than Caribbean, but it's hardly something I've studied.

No, I'm sure if they have any racial issues they keep them to themselves in these social settings. We have people of several different cultures come to drum together, which is one of the cool things about drum circles. We've had people from India, Caribbean, Africa, Latin America... it's not like we usually talk about where people are from, but sometimes we ask if a new person (regardless of heritage) would like to talk a little about their drumming background, share anything with the group or start a rhythm.

I've heard Rastafarian music and we have a local Reggae artist who comes by sometimes. Of course people are going to have racial issues, but at least they leave them behind when they come to the drum circle.

Julie - with all of your 'education', you seem to lack a basic understanding of what 'racism' is.

Being 'racist' does not mean that you call people by racial slurs, though that might fall under it. Being a RACIST, simply means that you tend to define people by whatever race they appear to be.

I'm definitely NOT a 'racist' because I don't believe in race. It's a myth. We are all related if you go back far enough in the family tree, and we're all human.

People in Mock who may pick on you because of your supposed skin color, are not necessarily 'racist' either... they're just slamming YOU. People like former member Sinister, WAS racist in some of the things she said. People who talk about 'all blacks' this or that, whether it's in a positive or negative light, are racist. People who say 'we' and 'them' when talking about race, are racist.

Making fun of an individual's race related traits, is not necessarily racist... it's just cruel.
