Well, I had to look up Caribbean stereotypes, and apparently common stereotypes include: dreads, cannibalism, having children at a very young age, lack of education, etc.

The only 'stereotype' I've been aware of is the whole Rastafarian/pot-smoking connection (Jamaica mostly). Which I guess does include 'dreads'.

It's just not much fun to mock really. Rasta folk come to my drum circles sometimes. Cool people. They certainly don't drone on and on about racism. In fact, I've never heard it mentioned.

LOL...that's because you're not listening. Rastafarians definitely talk about race....Also, reggae music is full of lyrics about "evil whitey"...but since they're speaking patois you may not perceive it - but it's there. These folks were enslaved / colonized - no way they are not talking about race. It's just that the conversations are different because the circumstances / perspectives are different.



Growing up, I blended in pretty well - that is, unless I wanted to speak with an accent I didn't. So, some people had no idea I was who / what I was. I am sharing this because people made pretty nasty remarks about Black immigrants living in the US - kind of along the lines of how folks are speaking about the Mexicans coming here and taking all the jobs. Black Americans & Carib Blacks do not necessarily get along. Black Americans & African Blacks living in the Amercicans don't seem to get along 100% either. In both cases the Americans are saying the immigrant groups "think they are better" & take all the jobs and the immigrant groups are saying the Americans are "lazy" and "uneducated."

My family has African ancestry, my husband is a dark skinned man & I have family members of all hues. I have dated all kinds of men from Mexican to Chinese to Black American. You know you are right about that.
When we were restoring some of the brownstones in Bed Stuy we had most of our crew from Barbados & St. Lucia and they were known in the neighborhood by the American blacks. We would get harassed daily that we took jobs away from the locals and were under constant threats. They tried to bully us saying it was the law to hire locals.

But this is not just among the black community when it comes to work you know, Julie. This happens all over. You just only saw this at home because it was in your community and in your socioeconomic circles at the time.

Like I said... I didn't really find any of the stuff I saw 'mock worthy', because most of it would apply to many other groups across the board. Well, except for the cannibalism stuff... which was kind of weird since I would think that would apply more to certain African villages than Caribbean, but it's hardly something I've studied.

No, I'm sure if they have any racial issues they keep them to themselves in these social settings. We have people of several different cultures come to drum together, which is one of the cool things about drum circles. We've had people from India, Caribbean, Africa, Latin America... it's not like we usually talk about where people are from, but sometimes we ask if a new person (regardless of heritage) would like to talk a little about their drumming background, share anything with the group or start a rhythm.

I've heard Rastafarian music and we have a local Reggae artist who comes by sometimes. Of course people are going to have racial issues, but at least they leave them behind when they come to the drum circle.

Julie - with all of your 'education', you seem to lack a basic understanding of what 'racism' is.

Being 'racist' does not mean that you call people by racial slurs, though that might fall under it. Being a RACIST, simply means that you tend to define people by whatever race they appear to be.

I'm definitely NOT a 'racist' because I don't believe in race. It's a myth. We are all related if you go back far enough in the family tree, and we're all human.

People in Mock who may pick on you because of your supposed skin color, are not necessarily 'racist' either... they're just slamming YOU. People like former member Sinister, WAS racist in some of the things she said. People who talk about 'all blacks' this or that, whether it's in a positive or negative light, are racist. People who say 'we' and 'them' when talking about race, are racist.

Making fun of an individual's race related traits, is not necessarily racist... it's just cruel.
