Her Majesty arrived at the hospital, near Cambridge, this morning from her Sandringham estate. Prince Phillip was this morning recovering after being airlifted to hospital for emergency heart surgery. The Duke of Edinburgh was flown to the specialist cardiothoracic unit in a RAF search and rescue helicopter after being taken ill at Sandringham with serious chest pains last night.

60TH YEAR OF REIGN [Image: 0002047C.gif]

[Image: article-2096935-1198AC21000005DC-978_634x969.jpg]

The new portrait of the Queen and Prince Philip by photographer John Swannell that has been released on the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty's accession to the throne
In a statement to mark the start of her diamond jubilee year, the Queen – only the second monarch after her great great grandmother Queen Victoria to celebrate 60 years on the British throne – vows once again to serve her people for the rest of her life.
Her message is interesting because, unlike addresses issued to mark her silver and golden jubilees, the Queen takes the opportunity to rededicate herself to her people, scotching rumours that she might abdicate in favour of her son and heir, Prince Charles.

SORRY CHARLIE! hah

The second son of Dutch monarch Queen Beatrix has been seriously injured in an avalanche in Austria.

Prince Friso, 43, was buried under snow when he skied off a trail in the resort of Lech earlier today.

He has been admitted to an Innsbruck hospital where his 'life remains at risk', according to a Dutch government statement.

The prince was buried under snow for 20 minutes before he was rescued and airlifted to hospital, the Austrian news agency APA reported.

The prince was skiing with one companion away from marked ski runs when the mass of snow, 30 meters wide and 40 meters long, hit them around midday, APA said.

He was pulled unconscious from the drift about 20 minutes after the incident and resuscitated at the scene. He was then medivacked to the university clinic in the western city of Innsbruck.

His condition was 'stable but life threatening', and the queen and his wife were at his side, the Dutch government said in a statement.

A statement from the Netherlands royal family added that he is in intensive care.

It read: 'Doctors treating him describe the prince's condition as stable, but his life remains at risk.'

The second of Beatrix's three sons, Friso gave up any claim to the Dutch throne in order to marry Dutch commoner Mabel Wisse Smit, in 2004

i would think this would go for more money than this, for its historical value:

A ‘wanted’ poster issued by Oliver Cromwell offering a reward for Charles II’s capture is expected to fetch £1,000 at auction today.

The item, dubbed the ‘most famous wanted posted in the world’, was issued on Wednesday September 10, 1651, after the defeat of the King’s forces at the hands of Cromwell’s New Model Army in the Battle of Worcester a week earlier.

After the bloody encounter the fugitive King fled and began his historic horse ride to Boscable, Staffs, where he famously hid in an oak tree.

Then having evaded Cromwell’s forces and with the aid of Catholic nobles Charles II slowly made his way to the coast and escaped into France.

Adorned across the top of the poster are the powerful words: ‘A PROCLAMATION for the Discovery and Apprehending of CHARLS STUART and other Traytors his Addherents and Abettors.’

It offers a reward of £1,000 - about £75,000 in today's money.

She thanked the nation, looked back on her reign, re-pledged her allegiance and praised her loyal family... and before her time was up, she even squeezed in a few jokes.

The Queen celebrated her Diamond Jubilee today with an historic address to both houses of Parliament in which she paid a touching tribute to Prince Philip, her 'constant strength and guide' over 65 years of marriage.

In a gilded display of very British pomp and pageantry, the ceremony at Westminster Hall saw MPs, peers - and prime ministers past and present - rub shoulders in honour the octogenarian monarch's reign of 60 years.

It was the first time in a decade that she had spoken to members of the House of Lords and Commons. The last time was in 2002 for her Golden Jubilee.

Standing before a hushed audience, Queen Victoria's great great granddaughter paid tribute to the British virtues of 'resilience, ingenuity and tolerance' and the armed forces.

But the event's most touching moment came when she thanked husband the Duke of Edinburgh, who sat as always beside her, for his 'constant strength' and guidance over the decades.

RE: The Royals ~ - Lady Cop - 03-31-2012

i do love to see the cavalry in full regalia with their magnificent horses~~

This summer the world’s gaze falls upon Britain for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations and then the London Olympics. The pomp and ceremony that will accompany these national landmark events is sure to leave the hundreds of thousands who witness it – and billions of global television viewers – awestruck.

As always, the Household Cavalry will be at the heart of the celebrations, continuing the regiment’s centuries-old tradition of service to the Royal Family and the nation. But how do the 341 officers and men at Hyde Park Barracks and their 232 horses achieve the perfection demanded by their Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Dan Hughes?

A 1793 map of England firing a tsunami of poop at revolutionary France
This is A New Map of England and France: The French Invasion, or John Bull Bombarding the Bum-Boats, a 1793 cartographic masterpiece that depicts an anthropomorphic Britain launching a tidal wave of feces across the English Channel at would-be French invaders and revolutionists.

This piece was drawn by English caricaturist James Gillray, who made his career on thousands of satirical cartoons. This map was Gillray's response to growing revolutionary zeal on the Continent.

Explains the British Museum of this piece:

the comic map is represented by the body of George III (John Bull), his head in profile to the right, wearing a fool's cap composed of 'Northumberland'. His left leg is drawn up, Norfolk forms the knee, the mouth of the 'River Thames' the ankle, Kent the foot. His outstretched right leg terminates as Cornwall. From the coast, at the junction of 'Hampshire' and 'Sussex', issues a blast of excrement inscribed 'British Declaration', which smites a swarm of 'Bum-Boats' extending from Ushant to the mouth of the Seine. The map is divided (inaccurately, and with omissions, but with a rough correctness) into counties, Wales representing the flying coat-tails of the King, who strides across the ocean with great vigour.
