Some people are really pissed that Paula Deen apparently used the N world. She has 3 shows on the Food Network and there are calls to take her off the air. Are those people overreacting?

IDK.
I don't like the N word and don't use it in any context; just doesn't occur to me.
But, some people who don't consider themselves racist believe its usage to be okay in some contexts. Deen is one of them.
In her deposition, she said it's no big deal to use it in a joke and admitted she's used the word in conversation in her lifetime, when everybody did.
The weirdest thing for me was her describing how she wanted to throw a southern plantation style wedding for her on-the-job porn-watching brother, Bubba. She doesn't consider the porn on the job to be a big deal either. She wanted the wedding to be old style with all black waiters dressed in white coats. When asked, she essentially agreed, "yeah, they would have been slaves back then".
She's not PC, really never has been. Is she a racist? Hell if I know.
But, I don't think she'll get booted from her shows in response to public outcry either way unless the network feels that these revelations will result in a significant loss of advertisers/ratings.
It'll be a business decision, not a moral one. Rush Limbaugh still has a national show FGS.

Who gives a shit if that old, fat slut ever said nigger or not, people say the word in different contexts everyday. This is the kind of nonsense that perpetuates racism, not help it.
I don't think it will get her booted, the times have changed and the word is becoming old news, even though many are still clinging to it.

I don't think it should get her booted, she didn't use it on any of her shows. I am not a big fan of the word either, spent a lot of years getting on folks ass about using it. Then I moved to Florida, sad to say I have used it more and more over the years here. I think the plantation slave wedding thing was very distasteful, but not something that should be made any kind of a big deal. Pretty much all the blacks I know around here are way worse than that.
