RE: 18 Firefighters Dead - Duchess - 07-02-2013 This is one of the families. I saw her interviewed this morning. It was very moving. She wanted us to know her husband and she was able to hang in there and share a little. She has four kids under the age of eight. It was heartbreaking listening to her. I don't think there is anything in life to prepare someone for this kind of horror. ![]() RE: 18 Firefighters Dead - Jimbone - 07-02-2013 (07-02-2013, 03:27 PM)username Wrote: Would a person suffocate under those circumstances? Imagine the devastation of losing her husband but the fear of raising their kids alone. Having to look into their little faces and know they lost their father. She can at least tell them he died a real hero. Although at this point I don't think that gives her much comfort. RE: 18 Firefighters Dead - Duchess - 07-02-2013 They had been texting back & forth. He had sent her a picture to show their location in regards to where the fire was and said they were probably going to have to sleep there. That fire must have zoomed like a tornado across the distance, that text turned out to be the last one, she couldn't reach him after that. I saw how far away the fire was, it was in the photograph and miles separated him from it. RE: 18 Firefighters Dead - ramseycat - 07-02-2013 Duchess you mentioned the fear the fire fighters must have felt. What about the fear this wife felt when she wasn't able to reach her husband anymore. I don't think she knew (at that time), Ramsey. She had just seen the picture & saw how far away the fire was. No one could have possibly known this was going to happen. They were a 20 man unit, one survived and that was the guy who moved the truck they had come in on. To join, candidates must complete a boot camp-style test to prove they are in peak physical condition. They have to run 1.5 miles in 10 minutes and 35 seconds, complete 40 sit-ups in 60 seconds, 25 push-ups in 60 seconds, and seven pull-ups. Members trained by running, hiking, yoga, doing core exercises and weight training. 'Problem solving, teamwork, ability to make decisions in a stressful environment and being nice are the attributes of our crewmembers,' its website read. After a fire breaks out, they hike for miles into the wilderness with chain saws and backpacks filled with heavy gear to build lines of protection between people and the blaze. They remove brush, trees and anything that might burn in the direction of homes and cities. This is the photograph I referred to yesterday, the one that the hotshot had sent his wife - ![]() RE: 19 Firefighters Dead - Cynical Ninja - 07-03-2013 (07-02-2013, 10:20 PM)Clang McFly Wrote: When I dream of eating guts they're usually not extra crispy. RE: 19 Firefighters Dead - Jimbone - 07-03-2013 Ah, I see Clunk had taken his troll vitamin last night - he's had a little extra vigor in his troll-bait postings! He upped his game from being a tranny to mocking dead firefighters! RE: 19 Firefighters Dead - Donovan - 07-03-2013 If it's any consolation, from what I know living in heavy forested and fire prone areas and knowing a few of these guys...when shit goes south during a fire it happens quick. The "baked potato suits" work for that reason-when a windblown fire changes direction it moves so quick it's A) too fast to run away from and B) already racing past you and gone like a flash once it burns up the instant fuel on the ground. These guys died because the fire slowed over the top of them from what I heard, wasn't anything they could have done. Meanwhile, fire raises the temperature several hundred degrees and fills it with acrid smoke. One or two breaths instantly sears the lungs and kills you. They likely didn't have much time to react before they were dead, let alone reflect on how bad it was gonna hurt etc. Small consolation I know... That's why I wanted to know if they would have suffocated or something. I read that hotshot #20 was serving as their lookout. He says he called and told them that the fire had changed direction and that he was moving out because of the imminent danger. He asked them if they needed anything and left. ![]() RE: 19 Firefighters Dead - Donovan - 07-03-2013 How much survivor guilt must that dude be going through... I wanted to know that it happened that fast. I know that some were found in their shelter & others weren't and I wondered about that too.
