And a seatbelt killed (decapitated) my older cousins boyfriend back in HS.

Seatbelts kill almost as many people as they save. But those statistics aren't put out for public consumption.

Fact: The seatbelt law is just another way for the gvmt to make money off the working stiff.

That's bullshit... fatalities caused by wearing seatbelts are far less common than fatalities caused by NOT wearing them. The statistics are further improved if the idiots wear the seatbelts CORRECTLY.

Ok, here's why that isn't valid.

People who wear a seatbelt are more likely to be able maintain control of their vehicle (to some degree) than someone NOT wearing a seatbelt. So, it DOES affect other people if the driver does not wear his/her seatbelt. Also, a passenger not wearing a seatbelt is more likely to be thrown onto another person, at high speed (causing more injuries to OTHER people than would have been otherwise).

Jammin Wrote:You own your own business and the gov't tells you cannot allow a legal activity in YOUR business if you choose????? I don't smoke, I hate cigarette smoke but it's not the gov'ts right or duty to tell me what I can allow in my establishment. It's a bunch of bullshit.

If I wanted to allow smoking in my fitness center, I should be allowed to. Will I have many member? Absolutely not, but it should be MY CHOICE to run my business as I see fit.

And here's why THAT is not valid.

For a very long time, people WERE allowed to smoke in their businesses. Guess what?? Pretty much every place was polluted with cigarette smoke. It was not a choice of 'hey, let's not go to THAT restaurant... they allow smoking!', because EVERY place allowed it and just ONE DAMNED PERSON smoking in the restaurant, is enough to fill the place with nasty smoke, not to mention the effect on the people who WORKED in those places.

One again, people demonstrated their extreme lack of responsibility when they were allowed to exercise that freedom. The only places of business I can really understand 'smoking' to be allowed in, are bars and clubs (which is one reason I don't go to them).

People that talk about infant seats when everyone else is talking about seatbelts are fucking stupid.

If people are too stupid to wear a seatbelt and it's not a law, it will just help thin the herd.

Infant seats are related to seatbelts.

I would agree with the 'herd thinning' if it were not for the potential to harm other, innocent people.

Infants and adults are not the same, therefore, neither is the use of safety harnesses. Infants and children do not have the cognitive skills to determine the pros and cons of wearing a restraint so a law to protect them from the stupidity of others is a good idea.

As adults, we have (or should have) the brains to weigh the benefits and decide if we wear a seat belt. Their are not innocent physical victims who will be harmed if I choose not to protect myself.

Bullshit.

As Syber has already said not wearing a seatbelt greatly reduces your ability to control your vehicle should you become involved in an accident, so potentially by not wearing a seatbelt you are indeed putting other peoples lives at risk.

Now shut the fuck up and buckle up bitch.

If you had the IQ of a kumquat you would have previously read that I buckle up.every.single.time.

Don't comment if you're going to skim.
Gee-I'm thinking-if you are in a fucking accident you have ALREADY lost the ability to control your vehicle.

RE: Always wear your seatbelt - Cynical Ninja - 02-09-2010

You do buckle up?, so why bitch on about the "freedom" not to buckle up?

Nobody should have the "freedom" to be a dangerous and irresponsible asshole.

I was in a car smash in 1996, the driver my mate Chris, said that if he hadn't been wearing his seatbelt he wouldn't have been able to control the skid the smash sent us into and we would have dropped over a 20 foot embankment.

It's about personal freedom.

You were free not to get in the car with your mate, but you CHOSE to. There certainly are some risks associated with freedoms, and we all should be able to weigh and decide for OURSELVES which precautions we choose to take when dealing with our own safety.

I like the "if we weren't" argument. There is a situation like that to support either side.

RE: Always wear your seatbelt - Cynical Ninja - 02-09-2010

Most people are idiots though, otherwise there would no need for any health and safety regulations and legislation.

There are too many reckless dickheads out there to give people choices about everything.
