I like slate. It's clean lines and earthy. I bet you could slap some over the brick and do a new wooden mantle. I still say go with the big honkin' tv though.

Damn Cracker! Notworthy I see it!

I would go with shit brown. Just because. hahaha

Is that fireplace full brick or half brick?

It took me a minute but you mean the depth of the brick? It's full brick.

I like brick especially full brick. It is expensive and hard to find a good mason. If you use the fireplace brick holds the heat and keeps the place warm for hours after the fire goes out. I would never put a tele above it but would try to find another wall to hang it on keeping the fireplace off to the side. It can become a focal point if you have a party by rearranging the furniture. Do you use it?

I'm going to have to process what you're saying (appreciate the input). We don't use the fireplace as it is (too lazy and do you know how many spiders and creepy things hide in woodpiles? Uh-uh, not for me). But if I had a gas fireplace that I could just turn on? I'd use it. I *think* if we don't get a major heat producing insert, we could mount a t.v. over it without damaging the t.v.

Like I said, I need to process the rest of your suggestions because....I don't know shit about this stuff and I'll have to read up on some of it. Smiley_emoticons_slash Thank you.

Smiley_emoticons_smile I have to lower the mantel down or else the t.v. will sit too high--not optimal viewing height and all that shit.

RE: Duchess or anyone else who has a good eye... - Maggot - 02-03-2011

Well if you do not use it a fireplace is nothing but a bug catcher. 2 square things above and below each other look a little weird. I would close off the fireplace and put either an entertainment center there with the tele above or a bookshelf. You can cover the fireplace with it but put a firestop in the chimney in case there was ever a fire you do not want a chimney helping to fan the flames. Cap the top so no critters get in there and if you ever sell it the new owners would have the option of either fixing it or keeping it covered.
