It varies by state & states are given a great deal of leeway on how it's used, some of the money may be used to fund further lotteries, it could be used to fund treatment programs & education programs. My state gives you a year to claim your winnings & if you choose to be anonymous that's fine too. It's not likely I would turn my nose up at that kind of money if I had to go public, nope.

RE: Do you play powerball (lottery)? - username - 05-30-2013

The sad part is it's probably your family and friends that would potentially drive you nuts. It's pretty easy to ignore strangers.

I would totally share that kind of wealth though. My kids would be set (not filthy rich but well off enough to always have a roof over their heads) and then I'd have fun with the rest (and donate a bunch too).

It would be so cool to practice random acts of kindness with money like that. *dreams*

RE: Do you play powerball (lottery)? - Maggot - 05-30-2013

I would claim it as Maggot or something. Fuck-em.

On the national lotto tickets in the UK there is a box you can tick if you don't want any publicity if you win a jackpot. They can't force you to go public and that's the way it should be.

Really?...an 84 year old woman won the powerball.

She better get busy spending.

RE: Do you play powerball (lottery)? - username - 06-05-2013

Oh boy! Her heirs are probably treating her pretty damn well right now.

"Sorry about the crappy nursing home, mom".

RE: Do you play powerball (lottery)? - crash - 06-06-2013

She was on the news here tonight. They said she lived in a modest home. Then they showed it. It was a tiny blue shitbox that looked like a trailer without wheels. At least she has independence I guess. They said she will end up with $278m after tax. I guess that's a long way short of the $600 million being touted, but still a stupidly large amount of money.

I cringed when they named her and said her age. There goes every peaceful day that poor old bird was ever going to have.

I thought the very same thing. Unfortunately, Florida doesn't allow one to remain anonymous which I think is ridiculous. It's no one's business and I don't understand why they would think it is.

If I'm right, the Powerball lottery says that in order to collect a jackpot, you have to be identified and have one of those pics taken with the giant check.

For me, no big deal. But, for an older person trying to live in anonymity, probably a huge pain in the ass. Sightseers and oglers, not to mention wondering if her kids will try to off her so they can start spending her money.

Well if her kids do try and off her its better she's identified already so she won't end up an anonymous old lady who died under mysterious circumstances. No Unsolved Mysteries cameo for her.

RE: Do you play powerball (lottery)? - Carsman - 06-07-2013

I fell sorry for the courteous woman who let the old lady cut in line ahead of her cause the lady was elderly! hah

(Some say split second timing may have changed the winning numbers anyway. The woman will never know.)

Anyway, some also say that the "old lady" should give the "courteous woman" some $$$$ for her thoughtfulness. What say you?

RE: Do you play powerball (lottery)? - Maggot - 06-07-2013

Yes...........if she remembers.

Yes, I think she should! If it wasn't for that woman's good manners she wouldn't be filthy rich right now. She can afford to show her appreciation in a large way and I hope she does.

RE: Do you play powerball (lottery)? - Cynical Ninja - 06-07-2013

Is whether or not you win randomly generated by where you are in the queue?

There was a younger woman already in line in the "winning position", so to speak, she let the elderly woman cut in front of her and the elderly woman won the lottery.

Agree, with close to $280,000,000 "after taxes", the "old lady" can certainly afford to & wouldn't miss giving the woman a measly $1,000,000. (I would give it to her, and be happy to do it, & maybe even more)

(Of course, I would also make sure my relatives would want for nothing either, even though they had nothing to do with it)

I thought the lottery was a numbers game. Did the younger woman play the winning numbers?

Everyone is assuming or some may know, that the numbers were computer generated.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the quick pick option.

This thread has the potential of becoming really mind numbing.
