Robocop ruined by assholes - Cynical Ninja - 12-01-2013

They are remaking the classic 80s film Robocop.

My thoughts are can be summed up by this safe link.

I hate re-makes the sound of music, Robocop, the nutty professor, the list goes on. I hear they are re-making "Its a wonderful life" although I think that was a remake itself.

I don't like it when they mess around with old classics. They did it with Miracle On 34th Street.

I don't like it when rappers get their hands on traditional Christmas carols either.

I don't mind remakes when they do them well. It's just that they so rarely do it well. Seems like it only really works if quite a few years have passed. Or if the remake goes in such a wildly different direction as to be a whole new movie (like Scarface).

If a Hollywood producer sees that and decides to run with it at least we know who to blame.

I'm actually wracking the Ramen noodles in my head to think of a remake I actually liked and so far I've come up with none.

Is there a remake that anyone actually liked? Has there ever been a remake better than the original?

There was talk of a sequel that would continue the story after Jimmy Stewarts character saw the light and found redemption. I always thought who gives a fuck what the character does next? He's told his story.

Its like Phanton Menace, what was Darth Vader like when he was nine years old?, who gives a shit?

Its the lack of decent new stories and ideas and when they do actually have new stories or ideas nine times out of ten they are drivel.

I was dragged to the cinema by some mates a while ago to see Will Smith and his sprog (of course) in After Earth. Even as a fan of science fiction I couldn't ignore the fact it was absolute horseshit from beginning to end.

Depends on your definition of remake. I had a hard time thinking of any as well before I started considering a wider spectrum. Some would argue genre films do well as remakes especially as technology catches up to the director's vision. So while I risk blasphemy here I would argue the Chris Pine Star Trek is far superior to the first Motion Picture and is even better than the original series in some ways. Original Planet of the Apes: way better than Wahlberg of the Apes but not as good as Rise of the Apes. Carpenter's The Thing is a thousand times better than the original. And while it would be tough to slight Kurosawa in any way, the westerns made from his samurai movies were every bit as good. Just don't know if you could call them remakes, exactly.
Like I said: the ones that seem to do well are remakes that go a whole different way so as not to remind anyone how iconic the original was. I hear good things about Oldboy. Here's hoping it holds up...

They are remaking Oldboy? In Hollywood? Hmmmm I wonder if they leave in the bit where the main character eats a live octopus for real or the plotline when he realises he's been fucking his own daughter without realising?

I don't know, I haven't been able to see it. It's already out in theaters here, and got great feedback. But I won't know until I can get it PPV or streaming. Just too hard to juggle kid schedules. The original was fucking amazing though. I'm almost afraid to see this one.
